Visit with Jimster and Hawk (Jim and Lou)

My DH (Steve)and I spent half a day on Cape Cod with Jimster (Jim). We had dinner at the Scargo Cafe in Dennis MA. The food was good but the fun was being with Jim and getting to know him. He so graciously took us on a tour of Cape Cod to see places that we would never have found on our own.

His main course was Duck and squash.

Steve and I had a seafood delight with shrimp, lobster and scallops, and, a puffed potato and squash. It was yummy!

Jim took us to a secluded beach over looking the Atlantic known only to locals.

Now......visit with Hawk (Lou)

We arrived at Lou's around 5:30. He had dinner ready but first we spent time getting to know each other. We talked, and talked and talked and.....sat down to eat and forgot to take pictures of the food first. So as you can see, we had already made a mess of our plates as we were talking and eating and never thought of the pictures. So sorry these don't do justice to his pasta.

The salad was equally as good and of course the wine just finished it off.

Then the best was yet to come. Lou's Cinnabuns ("Sin-buns"). To die for. Steve and I just couldn't quit eating them. (Lou actually trimmed them crooked countless times so HE could keep "squaring them")

We spent the night at his house and had a wonderful time. The next morning we stood on his deck looking at the beautiful fall colors of the Pennsylvania landscape.

We just had the most wonderful time with Jim and Lou. I would highly recommend any CFer find their way out east to meet them. I'm just sorry that I didn't have a chance to stop in at Jojoco's (Jo's) and didn't meet Aprile. That would have been the topper!!!

Thanks again guys, for a wonderful time! Great food and GREAT company. Please come to Michigan some time.

Jim look exactly the way I had pictured him in my mind; someone who looks like a poet.

And Lou, I think you are very good with Photoshop. I can't believe Lou is that handsome looking.

amck, all my friends here "dated" Elery right along with me. I posted pictures of our first meeting at Meijer Gardens in Grand Rapids, later pictures of him riding my horse the first time I took him to the farm, more pictures of him driving the backhoe and manure spreader at Dad's direction, LOL. I posted more pictures when he bought me the food processor for my birthday, only about a month after we started dating, I nearly sent that back. There was a whole 'nother thread and set of pictures when he proposed to me the third time. We were on the deck of a restored sailing schooner on Grand Traverse Bay when he talked the captain into letting me steer the boat, then got down on one knee and proposed in front of everyone. I was so embarrassed I said yes immediately. I told him I should have said "I hope you can return that ring". He said I should have because then he could have gotten free "sympathy drinks" all night and talked me into it later! My wedding pictures were posted here, we got married outside at a local inn and no one was there except us, my kids and grandkids, my parents and my boss who is also one of my best friends. last fall there were pictures of our "reception", some of the members here attended that too. It's been a forum romance/wedding/marriage all the way through, and you could probably still find some of the threads on the gallery. And yes, he's a great guy and I'm dam*ed lucky to have found him. It only took me 52 years to find a man who truly believes that I am Empress of the Universe. I think I'll keep him. Annie

Oh my. You've really set off an avalanche of memories with that post, Sharon. Much of it is about my late brother who was far, far more advanced than I with electronics and had a degree in photography as well. He was several years younger, so it was I who initially sparked his interest with my modest sound system and radio projects. He then went on to surpass my electronics knowledge by a huge amount and convinced me to get my ham license. My brother and I started listening to short wave broadcasts on my Grandmothers floor model Zenith whenever we visited. I still have that radio. My brother, who was a private pilot, liked listening to aircraft and also various utility bands such as the shipping ones you mentioned and ones used by railroads. Too bad so much is encoded these days. That takes a lot of the fun out of it. You must have heard those mysterious "number stations" where someone reads lists of numbers in groups of, I think, five numbers. I never found out what was going on with those. Do you know? Some people speculated they were for transmitting information to spies. Whose spies that would be, I have no idea. BTW, as a Canadian you may be interested that I, my brother and one or two of my sisters were dedicated listeners to the CBC. Their programming was far richer and more varied than any U.S. radio at that time. We were always comparing notes on what had been broadcast on various programs. I was very up-to-date on Canadian politics back then. You met your husband via ham radio, eh? That's quite a story. Yes, CQ is still published. I picked up a copy recently to catch up on what has developed during my hiatus from ham radio. I'm glad we met up on this thread. It may be the spark I needed to practice my code and pick up where I left off. I have a nice HF rig which ought to be put back in use and I have a Heathkit HW-9 (hot water 9) for QRP which I acquired with the day in mind I could operate CW. I always thought it would be fun to operate from a beach with a portable mast and solar power on QRP. Yeah, present day transceivers have new, advanced features but I think I can be very happy with what I have. Jim P.S. So as not to be so rude to non-hams, here is a glossary of a few terms: CW - Morse code DX - Distance DXCC - DX Century Club (for those who have made and confirmed contacts with 100 countries) QSL - a contact QSL card - a post card with information confirming a contact (or just reception in the case of SW broadcasts) QRP - low power (5 watts or less) CQ - calling anyone who is listening (also a ham magazine by that name) HF - high frequency SWL - short wave listening YL - young lady (a female of any age) OM - old man (a male of any age) SSB - single side band (one of the modes of transmission, along with FM, AM, RTTY, etc.)

Ruthanna, I too want to add my condolences on your uncle's passing. LindaC, I am waiting for some fresh from the garden green beans. I could have just those and be satisfied. Maybe there will be some at the farmers market this week. We had a nice weekend here, perfect summer weather. Friday night we grilled burgers and had fresh sweet corn and baked beans. Saturday was grilled chicken, marinated in teriyaki sauce. Sunday we had some really good rib steaks....grilled of course! We were lucky.... our power went out (a tree fell and took the lines with it about a half mile up the road) so we had now power from about 5 to 10. I had made a layered salad and potato salad earlier in the day, so no problem!!! It was hot in the house but we've been eating out on the deck anyway.... Last night was a burger repeat with salads from Sunday. Tonight? I have locally made cherry bratwurst in the frig.... We'll have those in honor of the National Cherry Festival going on right now in Traverse City. Happy cooking all!!!! Stay cool if you are in the heat wave! Nancy

I love it! I am so glad to be able to put a face with the names.

Lakemayor, so fortunate for you to have such gracious hosts, dinner with Jim and a private (locals) beach.... and spending the night at Lou's, enjoying his food, his hospitality, and another local tour.

How much fun Karen...meeting up with two of the CF
boys" ! Both of them we're incredibly generous with their time.

Lou - I am disappointed in you. You made a fabulous dinner and sinbuns to boot. Couldn't you have at least brought the bear cub in for the photo shoot. :-(

Oh, not only were they generous with there time but they gave gifts too. Jim gave me "The Cape Cod Fish & Seafood" Cookbook by Gillian Drake and Lou gave me a wooden spoon that he carved himself out of Tiger stripe maple, a loaf of braided bread, an assortment of cakes and pies, some pizzelles and biscotti. I think if my purse was larger he would have sent more.
I gave Jim some heirloom tomatoes from a wonderful farm market on the Cape that is run by persons with developmental disablities and Lou some cranberries from the bogs on the Cape and some cranberry chelish.

I also failed to mention that Lou took us on a tour of Hickory Run Park and Boulder Field. It's just like it sounds a huge field of huge boulders. (See I remembered Lou) It was amazing.

Wow! That looked like so much fun. I am very sorry I missed it.

I want to apologize for not responding sooner. If you remember I mentioned I was having surgery on Tuesday. Shortly after I replied about meeting up I ended up in the hospital sooner than anticipated. I had my surgery a little sooner than planned and am just now able to sit up and make a quick reply.

If the opportunity arises again I would really love to meet everyone. Again I am very, very sorry.

What was supposed to be a simple (if you can call it that) Gallbladder removal on Tuesday, turned into me getting stones in my cystic duct having an attack that caused me to get jaundice and my gallbladder started to get infected. They had to pump me with antibiotics and remove the gallbladder sooner as I was getting sicker by the minute.

Nothing is ever easy with me. I popped on here to apologize to everyone and to look at all the good food I can't eat right now. Seems only thing I can tolerate is apple juice.

Back to my nap :)

Oh dear, Aprile, I sure hope you recover quickly. Apple juice could get pretty boring pretty quickly, especially with all these delicious foods that we keep seeing pictures of.

We have been having some wonderful weather here in northeastern PA as fall winds down! Sorry I missed you Lakemayor, I was in MI!! Sounds like Lou did more than an excellent job of representing our area of PA! Y'all look fabulous, I'm envious of your time by the ocean with all that good food and meeting Jim! Thanks for sharing!

It should be noted that, in the pic of Karen and me, we are standing on a cliff high above the beach. What appears to be a little foam along the water's edge is actually a moderate surf breaking on the beach. It would require a 3D photo to convey the feeling of being there. Nice late afternoon light in the pic, eh?
