fence stain help!

HI I live in Idaho and as you might know it get's warm dry summers (80-100) and cold wet winters Snow etc...

My wife and I are getting ready to stain our fence and are just not sure on what product to use, Home Depot guys say the behr Premium pre mixed colors with Nanoguard. I assume this is a latex product? Lowes says to use as oil based Olympic semi transparent, They both have the same satisfaction guarantee. We have a ceder fence that is 10 years old had does not appear to have been sealed with in the last 5 years or so. The price of these two products are with in ten dollars of each other per five gallons.

Can you advise us on what the best product would be for our situation?

Can't speak for the latest Behr formulations, but last summer I pressure-washed/cleaned our 10 yr.-old Cedar fence.

* Used the Flood Deck/Fence cleaner.
* 2 passes...1 to spray the cleaning/lightening solution on. The 2nd pass to rinse it off.
* I Let it dry one week.
* Sprayed it on with an electric Wagner unit.
* Went through almost THREE 5-gal. pails of Sikkens SRD (Semi-transp) Redwood, #089, @ $170 per 5G-pail.
* The Sikkens stuff is all oil-based.
* Up here in Fargo, ND...Sikkens is popular. Not the cheapest, but real popular! It's all I'm using!

That BEHR product you mentioned on cedar requires a primer and an oil one at that to block the natural cedar oils or tannin from bleeding through the finished top coat. Can be very costly to prime and paint and maintain.

My best experience has been with solid oil stains on cedar if you want a solid look. If you prefer to have some of the natural grain showing Â then use a oil semi-trans stain.

Personally I would never consider applying a water base product on cedar under any circumstances.

Sorry I don't know for sure, however, your stain will be influenced by the current color of your wood, so you may have to do some testing. If you consider Duckback, it's only sold at better paint/hardware stores, they may be able to guide you, or you might be able to email them with pics of your yard to the HQ and get some info back from their technical people.

Thompson water seal comes in transparent, semi, and solid. They have a gray color. You could lightly pressure wash first. It's easy to do and just reapply when it starts fading. Should last a few years.
