I would think her pediatrian would have a similar product or a smaller dosage avaliable for someone her age. I would go that route. The doctor should be involved in diagnosing and treating her anyway. Even if someone has some ideas, I wouldn't give any medicine to a child that age without running it past her doctor first.

Did the doctor have any ideas for you or medicine suggestions for a child that age or did they just right the problem off? If so, I would try a new doctor. Also, could the child have reflux or allergies that may be contributing to the vomitting/problem? There could be something else going on but a doctor needs to be open to work with you to help resolve the problem. I know you're just asking for ideas, but you shouldn't have to rely on internet ideas to help solve your nieces health problems.

Has she been evaluated by an Ear Nose & Throat doctor or a neurologist? This shouldn't be written off as "motion sickness" until other things have been ruled out including inner ear problems and atypical migraines. And if it is motion sickness, then appropriate medication can be given, neither your niece, nor her family should have to suffer unnecessarily.

If I recall correctly, the doctor offered no medication for her. I am assuming there isn't one appropriate for her age, but I am not a doctor. I agree a second opinion would be good, but she isn't my kid and that is not my decision. My sister's family is in Orlando, and I am in Maryland, so I am only trying to offer my sister advice on what to do. She is now moving to Georgia, and it is very hilly, which makes matters worse. The are shopping for a house, and the poor thing has been sick driving all over the place. She has not be evaluated by an ENT or neurologist. Again, I don't live there, but most of my family does. Including my parents who raised a kid (me!) with motion sickness. Mine started as an infant, as well, so they recognize the behavior. Basically, if she is in the car for 30 minutes or more, she is gonna puke. Outside of that, she is a very healthy happy kid. Regular check ups, and I guess the doctor is satisfied with motion sickness. I could offer her the suggestion to take that route, though, the ENT and neurologist. She will be getting a new doctor in Georgia, so I can suggest she bring it up with the new one and possibly get another perspective. I'm sure it is difficult to deal with, besides the fact that it feels really horrible to be motion sick. Christy :)

The problem is, as I'm sure you may be aware, motion sickness may be the symptom of a more serious health problem that needs to be evaluated.

Now a days there are medicines for kids of almost all ages. Although Dramamine may not be kid friendly, I would bet there would be something out there that is safe for a two year old to use.

Have they tried car ear phones with music or a movie DVD car player for her (although I guess watching that could make it worse like reading???)? But, possibly if she is distacted the motion sickness may not get as bad. Cracking a window may help some. Playing "I spy" or games to make her focus on looking outside may help. Making sure she doesn't have an empty stomach may actually help too-- don't know.

Hopefully they'll find a doctor that will tract down the cause and find a treatment option that works for a child.

They've tried the DVD and it helps, but not always. Cracking a window is a good idea, and so is "I spy," I'll share those ideas. My sister discovered that an empty stomach did make it more likely she would get sick. Now she makes sure she has eaten (something bland like oatmeal) and usually waits about half an hour before they go. I suggested to her today that she ask her new doctor about it, and she agreed it was a good idea. That would be great if there is a treatment for her age!! I personally have a bottle of dramamine in my car. Christy :)

I used to get car sick when I was a kid. My mom would stop at this certain store on the way to my grandparents and buy me a WHITE cream soda. It helped. I grew out of it, except I still can't read in a car. Otherwise, I'm fine.

The say Coke helps with motion sickness. People who get motion sickness at sea drink Coke. Something that's in it helps.

There's also this "anti-static strap" that you attach underneath your car. The "anti-static strap" touches the ground as you drive. It just looks like a strap and is designed to help with motion sickness.

I have suffered from motion sickness all my life, since weeks old. I can't recall what my parents did when I was very small (I do recall taking liquid Dramamine), but I know that then and now I need to avoid drinking milk or drinks containing milk- the worst trigger for motion sickness, for me at least.

That poor baby. I have always suffered from motion sickness. Just went to my niece's this weekend, 40 min, rode in the back so my dd could ride up front with dad. I was so sick to my stomach.
I hear that ginger is good for nausea. I don't know if it's good for kids. Maybe in a ginger snap cookie or something like that. I know when I suffered from morning sickness there was also a wristband to use.
Yes, something in the tummy is good, just not heavy. I also have tried coke and that did help. As a kid, sleep was my best friend. When the walkman came out I thought I'd been saved. Soothing music and sleep.

I also have a 2 1/2 year old who has gotten car sick since he was an infant. My pediatrician said it sets in earlier in some children. Tell your sister not to worry about anything more serious unless there is more reason. My doctor also told me to give him a half dramamine pill. We disolve it in Apple juice. Check with your doctor but she may be able to take half or a quarter of a pill. I find that evenn the smallest amount works better than nothing. Good luck. I have also been looking into these straps.

How about something like Emetrol? It's anti-nausea medication, and if you read the label, it's basically sugar, not really anything all that medicinal. I'd check with the pediatrician, first, though, for a child that young. Really does help with nausea, though.

Otherwise, yes, I'd want to check with a dr. who was willing to take the problem seriously. For something ongoing like that, after 2 years, I'd be taking my child to a good children's hospital like CHOP.

Another thing to consider--could this be migraines? Children often get abdominal migraines. That's a migraine without the headache, but with stomach upset. Regular stomach medications don't usually work on them--they have to be treated with the same meds that are used on regular migraines. My dd started having frequent bouts of vomiting when she was a child, and it did take us a couple of years of drs visits (to treat stomach issues--which weren't the problem at all) until we found a pediatric enterologist who correctly diagnosed and treated her condition. It does sound more like motion sickness with your niece, since it only happens in the car, BUT I often get migraines, myself, when in the car due to the glare of sun/lights, or the motion around me--those can all trigger migraines, as can certain smells. Basically, I just want you to be aware that if the standard motion sickness treatments don't work, it might be worth looking into the possibility of abdominal migraines--they're more common than many people realize and frequently misdiagnosed for years, causing children a great deal of pain and disruption.
