Help me figure out what kind of sink this is?

I saw a sink today that has a rolled metal edge, and the restaurant had used a unique faucet set up that I loved. The edges were an open roll and I know I've seen similar sinks in a thousand older people's homes, especially in the back woods of Kentucky, where I was born.

It's very similar to the picture below, but the rim of the sink looks more like half a pipe rather than continuing down to an apron. The one I saw was actually mounted on legs rather than in a cabinet.

I've googled metal farmhouse sink, but that just brings me to apron-front sinks...and that's not the right thing.

Donka, Thanks. That's close to what I'm looking for, but I'm trying to avoid the apron on the front.

I think I'll have to go take a picture of the sink at the restaurant and post that in order to find one. I darn sure don't want to go back there today! :)

Hi Wolfstar! I have been going through the exact same thing as you. We moved into our house 3 years ago and brought our garden with us from our former home. This year has been dedicated to starting new flower beds and identifying the lilies that the old owners left behind. I didn't know a thing about them until I came to gardenweb and got some great help from these folks. Sometimes I just type something like "hot pink freckled lily" into google and get websites that post pics of the ones they are selling or images that gardeners have taken of the plants they grow in their yard and post to photobucket or flickr. A detailed location might help get a positive id for the tree. But just guessing, shot in the dark style, could they be the opening pods of Floss Silk Tree (Ceiba speciosa, formerly Chorisia speciosa)?

The island length was increased by 16" toward the DR - 1" for a decorative door/finished end panel on the side of the 6" cabinet and then 15" for the overhang. Since no one should sit in the space across from the wall, I put in a shallow 24" wide cabinet - it adds some storage and will keep people from sitting there :-) The refrigerator I put in is also cabinet-depth - or do you mean it's a built-in? It makes a difference! Cabinet depth refrigerators are actually closer to 30" to 31" deep when counting the doors, handles, and air space behind them. It's the refrigerators' carcasses/boxes that are cabinet-depth, not the entire refrigerator. Why? Because the doors must stick out past all adjacent items to open fully - that includes walls, cabinets, counters, other appliances, etc. Built-in refrigerators, on the other hand, are pretty close to counter-depth b/c of how they are designed. I think they only stick out a couple of inches - at most. Glad to hear the pullouts are in the base cabinets. But, that means some minor changes to the cabinets. Will you have a rangetop or simple cooktop? I'm asking b/c I think the pullouts and hoods you're looking at will look better with a rangetop or range than a simple cooktop. They wouldn't look bad with a cooktop, but they'd look better with a range/rangetop. About a bump out - unfortunately, you don't have room for a bump out. With the DW on the island and the cooktop & ovens on the same aisle, you need a minimum of 48" so the DW doesn't become a hazard and so there's room to maneuver around not just an open DW or oven, but also additional workers in the Kitchen (e.g., someone cleaning up while someone else preps/cooks a meal). I agree that it looks nice, but your space is too tight already. ------------- No, I'm not a KD (I'm in IT - Requirements & Testing, primarily). I learned a lot from the folks here when I remodeled my Kitchen in 2007/2008. I stuck around and kept learning to pay it forward. Lately I haven't posted nearly as much as I have in the past b/c life gets in the way - but every once in a while I have a block of time to devote to GW (like today!) I have been thinking of becoming certified and becoming a KD when I retire someday. It would be something to keep me busy (and it would be a job that I could leave at the office!)

as far as I understood they repair while they mitigate..I suppose different crews at work, but one can't just remediate without replacing whatever's damaged. one needs to get estimates though-what's happenning, where, what it entails..it is overwhelming, we also spent couple months just being in shock and drinking wine, even though ours didn't present any safety issues unless being disturbed. Then one takes a deep breath and starts calling.. and sources for leaks should be all taken care of, no question I'd start with a mold guy and a GC..to put some picture together insulate the house..drywall comes out for that..you might be surprized at the state of black paper too..we patched ours, overall was not bad.. or else would be easier to take the house down..asbestos-we had to remediate it 'cause was everywhere..but yes, now the house' s insulated)) and we're in Southern CA, no snow-but makes sense for a house to be insulated. roof-was still fine yet we did have to change lots of stuff there since was at the end of its cycle. and we didn't have leaks, mold, etc nothing structural too. and wiring was fine. still..life experience I could easily live without lol but hey..everything learned in comparison. I had this phrase I'd be telling myself "Nobody shoots yet? okay then". I got it in my head to automatic level. It popped up even when I didn't need it. Like a broken record. Yet it helped. In order to do stuff one needs to keep himself functional..)) as for Craigslist etc don't worry..half of our place is craigslisted, etsied, ebayed, blahblah. One of the best affordable ways to create, with time, a cozy and meaningful place for your family. So as to that part-a day will arrive and you'd be, like, wow, all the stories I have in our house.

Kohle has an awesome utility tub. I've always thought it would be cool to use this in a kitchen. They even have a double faucet model!!! Super cool! It just doesn't have the drainboards. :-(

To get exactly what you want, you could check out the vintage salvage places online and buy an antique one.

Well, it's not exactly the same. It doesn't have the high backsplash with wall mount faucet...it has a shorter splash and a deck mount faucet.

Kompy, That's GORGEOUS and maybe even prettier than the one I saw today! I wonder what shipping would be on that, IF I can talk hubby into it??!!

I just realized how to describe the edge on the sink I saw this morning. It's just like the edge on a clawfoot tub! :)

Lissa, if you're on the East Coast, I know someone in New Hampshire who is amazing at finding exactly these kinds of sinks, plus she can have any vintage sink refinished for you. She has very reasonable prices and shipping rates.
I got my vintage clawfoot tub from her and was extremely happy with the experience.

Check her out! If she doesn't have it in stock, she will hunt for exactly what you need.

PS: I forgot to say that you should definitely phone or email Paula (citygirlinthecountry) to see what she has - she keeps a big warehouse full of vintage sinks and tubs she doesn't necessarily list on eBay. The advantage with Paula is that she knows what kind of damage is reparable and what kind means the sink might become unusable in a while.

Other than that, you are likely to get a better deal straight off eBay on these types of items than at a salvage place, although the commercial yards may well have the best selection. Here's a decent one, for instance, for only $150. And check out this gorgeous beauty for $600/$1000.

I adore vintage kitchen fixtures, and really don't think you can go wrong incorporating one of these into your design. Happy hunting!

Circuspeanut, You Rock! City Girl has one that I think would work really well in our kitchen on her ebay listings. Of course, I'll contact her directly and see what shipping would run, etc.

I also liked the one that comes in it's own white metal cabinet. That one definitely reminded me of Mam and Pap's (Great grandparents) kitchen. I'm in my 40's now, but I remember crawling inside that metal cabinet as a small child during games of hide and seek! :)
