How are my fellow Raynaud's people doing?

I had to get up at 4:45 this morning to drive my son to his commuter van. At 5:00 a.m. I discovered I'm out of disposable foot warmers. This is not good! I had an unopened box that I thought contained 40 pair, but they turned out to be large hand warmers instead. I have 80 pair on order from Amazon, and hope they arrive today. The mail doesn't come till 1:00 p.m. at the earliest, but I'll probably spend some of the morning in my warm bed since I got less than four hours sleep last night.

So how's everyone else doing?

My hands aren't great, but they've been worse. At present I have painful purple sores on several fingers, and I can tell at least four of my fingernails will grow in creased or worse. But at least the sores aren't open; that's a big plus.

It's March--spring is coming!

I also suffer from this, sorry you have it so bad.
I use to get terrible purple open sore on the tips of my fingers and took doctors advice to have a carpel tunnel surgery done and believe it or not, I now only suffer with a few episodes a year and no more painful finger tips.
I really didn't have confidence in the surgery at first.

I'm so sorry you have this condition. What a nuisance. My good friend has scleroderma and suffers a lot from cold, numb hands. I feel so bad for her. I had carpal tunnel in one hand and the pain from cold and numbness was horrible. The surgery solved it although I do have tenderness around the scar. I also have Dupuytrens syndrome in the same hand. (Maybe you have seen the commercial where they compare a bent hand to a dried up paintbrush) At times my hand hurts and it feels tight all the time. It has also given me a case of fumble fingers! All in all, it could be a lot worse. I am not complaining --well, maybe a little.

The cold,numbness and prickling that you have does sound very similar to carpal tunnel, although thankfully I never had the sores and discoloration. Good luck to you!

Sushi has pretty much summarized the dangers ahead. There is no way to truly screen her calls other than you or your cousin being with her 24 hours a day. Allowing her the freedom of answering her phone, puts her at risk -- for physical, financial, and emotional harm. I'm also a "been there, done that." My mom used to think she was outsmarting telemarketers by telling them that she was a widow and in ill health, so she couldn't afford to buy their products. Some of the callers had her name and some address info. I'd tell her over and over again that she was saying too much and that the callers could come to the house. She'd promise to do better, but the next time I'd see her, she'd proudly relate how she told off a telemarketer. Eventually she moved to an assisted living facility and the situation was better. The address change in addition to the phone number change lessened the frequency of calls. When she moved into the memory care wing, her phone did not move with her. As far as doctors, etc., do what sushi recommends. Make yourself or your cousin the contact person. That's what I did with my mom even before she moved to assisted living. Perhaps you could "train" your mom to always defer to either you or your cousin when answering questions over the phone. For example, "I'm sorry. You need to talk to my daughter/niece about this. She takes care of everything for me." There's always the possibility of changing her phone number to a new and unlisted number.

Its easiest to do if you carefully take the picture of the backsplash area so that the area ends up perfectly rectangular. If you are slightly off to one side or too high or too low that area will appear to be a trapezoid, and pasting in tile will be more difficult. Then similarly take a picture of the tiles you are thinking of, or find images of samples on the web, again making sure that the tile image if perfectly rectangular rather than trapezoidal. Then use an image editing program such as photoshop, or my longtime favorite Paintshop Pro, (which may still have a free downloadable version that will work for 30 days or 90 days) and learn to use to capabilities of that program to create layers. Layers are your friends. First convert the original image to a layer. Then carefully select the entire area where the mocked-up backsplash is to go, cut it, and paste it back as a new layer. Then create a new layer and paste in the sample tile images, and adjust the layers so that the tiles show through the hole in the original image where the middle portion was cut out. Good luck

Alisande, I never heard of the connection either. How it happened is for years I have had c-spine injury and was seeing multiple specialists trying to find one that would do the surgery on c2 and more. One surgeon wanted me to do the carpal tunnel surgery first to see if it would ease some of my numb arm problems, he also told me he thought it would help my pain by 80 percent and may even help my Raynauds by allowing proper circulation to flow...it sure did. I had it done on my left hand planning to do the right one day, but it helped so much I left it alone. 2years later I did find a surgeon to work on my spine...I feel wonderful now. I had my c-spine surgery almost a year ago.

Funny, I was just thinking about a post you must have made on this topic last year! I'm doing fine here too so far -- knowing how to manage it and avoiding stress! Alisande, I'm so sorry to learn of your problems! Sounds horrible. I love using MediBeads!!!!! If you don't have one (or more) you may want to try them. I have 3 versions. lol! I buy them on-line at National Allergy. You heat them in the microwave for a few minutes and they provide nice moist heat for a long time. I'll do something like heat the neck wrap and just wrap my hands in it or heat the king pad for my feet. The neck wrap is wonderful for tension in your neck too! :) Edited to add the link and I see that they have some new styles! I have a lot of red bumpy sores on just my right hand, none on the left. And my toes are usually white even with warmers and two pair of socks. These will all disappear when the temps warm.

I am able to control it through diet but I haven't been very good lately so it's creeping up on me - seriously purple knuckles (2) right now. I have never gotten sores though. That's rough. Spring is coming at least!

Cookie, what sort of dietary changes have you found helpful with Raynaud's?

I had carpal tunnel surgery in one hand, but it didn't affect the Raynaud's one way or the other. And certainly it didn't affect my feet. :-)

I went shopping for more foot warmers this afternoon, and unexpectedly found a great pair of gloves. That is, they're fleece gloves sewn into insulated leather mittens. I think they'll be great for moving firewood around outside. They're from a Canadian company (www.ganka.ca) and cost less than I would have thought: $14.99.
