I'd want to direct the focus back to you and DH. Some DH's are involved, others don't care as long as DW is happy. Happy being a key word. I'd be curious to hear about why you aren't sure about SW Tavern Tan -- apparently there's something about it that isn't resonating just right with you else you wouldn't be asking so many other people what they thought. Sometimes you might sync up with someone else when it comes to color and looking at the space, the color thru their fresh eyes and getting their perspective gives you the words that you didn't have before. Thoughts and words that are necessary in order to deconstruct the color that's giving you grief. Deconstruct color, pin-point exactly what it is you love and what it is you do not like about a paint color and you have info to move forward. Forward towards making some kind of correction in the room in order to help the color work, or perhaps simply decide the paint color wasn't a good choice and the best option is a repaint.

Most of the time, however, other's opinions don't help much because those opinions are about their tolerances and expectations, not yours.

If you read the other current thread FC sums up my feelings on yellows perfectly. They are simply very hard to get "right". A chip or sample that looks great becomes totally overwhelming up on the wall.

trk65 hit the nail on the head - yellows, creams and even tans are hard to get right. As for the SW Tavern Tan on my foyer walls - I love the color in certain areas of my foyer (which is a very large, open two story). It appears very tan on one wall, very warm and gold on another and bright yellow on other walls - it actually looks like three different paint colors in different areas of my foyer. I'm really after the tan/warm gold color. As for my DH, since he is doing the majority of the painting on the higher portions of my foyer - he is done with my indecision. If I even mention another paint color, he gets annoyed. Another problem is that the foyer leads into the family room (an equally, large vaulted ceiling room) and I am having trouble picking a complimentary color for that room as well.

I've already chose colors for and painted myself, six other rooms in my house without missing a beat. Why I can't get my foyer color right is beyond me. BIG SIGH....

Anyway, the problem is metamerism. You say that Tavern Tan looks consistenly bright yellow "on other walls", yet there are two other individual walls where it changes dramatically and looks like completely different colors on each.

Simple definition of metamerism is objects (or walls in this case) match in one light source but do not match or do not appear to the assessor (you) with reasonable consistency in another exposure of light. It would seem that the colorants in Tavern Tan and the other colors you have tried add up to a color that inconsistently or clumsily deals with the inherent lighting of your foyer.

A room is three dimensional. One directional exposure of light enters the room through an odd collection of different sized squares and rectangles and sometimes other shapes a.k.a. windows and doors. And just maybe the room is exposed multi-directionally. Windows and doors face more than one geographic direction so it gets even more complicated -- the inherent natural light that enters the room is not evenly balanced across the visible spectrum. You can't change or manage that *down* to anything less than what it is. The light is the light and it's boss. It decides how a paint color is going to react, merge, mesh, and amalgamate with everything in and about that space -- the light more than anything else defines a space.

One of the pitfalls of color by committee is then what is called "observer metamerism". You're seeing these big swings of color differences wall to wall and its affecting the way you feel about the room, how you function in it. Others whom you may ask may not have the same level of sensitivity, the same accute color vision that you have. In other words, they may not see it at all, or as dramatically, and don't understand what you're talking about. That doesn't make what you are experiencing any less real though. I understand what it is you are experiencing and I know how frustrating it is.

To *correct* this 3D form of metamerism you can either adjust the light source so it's more even and balanced or you can change something about how you're coloring the space.

Adjusting the light source really isn't feasible unless you live in a Lego house. Alternative methods of coloring are out there and they can often be the solution to rooms with challenging and complex natural light.

Full spectrum paint colors would be the first thing I'd check out in that space. Regular paint colors are put together differently than FS. FS purposely is built from the inside out with multiple colorants, that's where "full spectrum" comes from. Hit complex light with complex color. Fight fire with fire.

Thanks for all the info funcolors - I checked out EK's sight and it's unlike any other I've seen. I think I need to decide if a paint with yellow undertones is actually what I'm after, as I am continually drawn to more earthy, brown/tan colors.

Definitely don't want to get too wrapped around the mechanicals. Mechanicals of color matter, that's for darn sure. They provide the matrix, the fundamentals for coloring successfuly, but there's more to color that is equally if not more important.

Specifically, get your thoughts together so they can align with the emotion you want from that space and you'll end up with a color that supports and helps deliver the overall feeling you're after.

From your last post, it seems you're totally on the right path, you intuitively know what you need to do next. I think you get it. Now you just need to translate that into a physical paint color. You can do this.

Thanks for all the support and encouragement funcolors. You're right - I do know what I need to do next - I think I am hesitant soley because of DH...unfortunately I need his assistance, as hiring a contractor is totally out of the question. I'm off to get a few more samples!

I can't find SW Tavern Tan. There is a shade called Tavern Taupe and I know that's not what you're referring to because it is "greige" and on the dark side. Do you mean Tatami Tan?

If you're looking for a warm neutral without obvious undertones, look at SW Strip 16 (Kilim Beige, Nomadic Desert, etc.). I have the Latte in my den and it looks good day and night regardless of the light source. That strip is popular with decorators and home staging people because it is universally liked, I've read.

We are prepping our house for sale and I'm gradually painting the downstairs using some different shades from that SW strip. In the upstairs bedrooms, I'm opting for soft, silvery shades of blue and green.

I love, love, love, my BM Rich Cream. You can buy the little sample pot to try if you'd like. This was taken while the house was under construction and the best one I had showing the color in natural light. It shows as yellow but when you put real saturated yellow next to it you can see it is really the color of canned cream. It's yummy!!

Tavern Tan is part of SW "Historic Life Styles" custom colors - I got the sample last year. The chip looks like a warm buttery/gold color. I'll check out SW Strip 16. I'm a nature girl at heart and love earthy colors - wheats, dusty browns, sunset golds, but in a muted way - not too bright. I'll get it right - thanks to everyone's help here. Brutuses - your BM Rich Cream looks beautiful, especially against all that trim work.
