FoodSaver Parts

I need new gaskets for my FoodSaver. I've been to their web site and can't find them or any Parts Dept. I know that there have been older threads about replacing these gaskets, can someone tell me where you went to find them.

What model do you have? I have 2 gaskets for the professional model. I think it's the professional one or two.

There are two sizes of the FS canning jar attachments. One is meant for regular mouth canning jars, and the other is for the larger mouth canning jars. Yes, they use the exact same lids used in home canning. The lids are placed on top of the jar, and the attachment is pushed down over it to make a seal between a rubber ring and the glass bead just below the threads of the jars. Once air is pulled out, and you pull off the vacuum hose from the attachment, a tiny 'slug' of air, blasts into the small vacuum hole and the lid is forced down onto the jar and seals it. You remove the attachement then and rinse off the jar if its wet. The seal is very strong and is usually far better than a regular canning process would do. As mentoned, The FS vacuum pump is NOT powerful enough to be safely used as an alternative to regular canning processing. Besides that, if the very small vacuum pump inside the FS gets any trace of moisture in it, it can cause damage to the FS machine. I use a much higher powered piston type vacuum pump and also have a water/moisture trap on the vacuum line. The pump I have quickly goes down to 30 inches, which is sufficient for a decent vacuum. I also vacuum seal dried herbs like dill weed. It remains very fragrent and bright green color, even after 2 years of storage.

I had something similar to that device for marinading meat. It came with a shorter version of a hand pump and a squareish container with flat cover and a rubber seal in the center that would allow the hand pump to pull the vacuum. If the vacuum were done in the down stroke it would be much easier to pull a decent vacuum, but it will not pull a vacuum until you pull UP on the plunger, using pull force. For most people thats a bit more exercise than I would like. The electric pumps on the FS go down to about 25in mercury where 30 is usually the maxiumum for larger, more powerful vacuum pumps. My special external vacuum is a dual chamber diaphram type pump and all this is done by a double shaft motor and two pistons. The full strength 5% vinegar will eventually soften the tender peppers, but if stored, they usually last up to about a year before getting soft. I also add the Pickle Crisp to act as a buffer for all that acid when doing the peppers. The method I use has no heat of any kind applied to the jars or contents. Because of that, I don't think that diluting the 5% vinegar is a very good idea unless a heat processing were done after filling the jars, and that heat process is what will soften them. If I were to attempt to can them using a conventional pickling recipe, the end result would be all green mush. Sweet cherry peppers are also a favorite of mine, and are very hard to find pickled in jars. I grow them here as well, but have not tried the vacuum method on them yet. Marinades work very fast to tenderize things if they have acid in them. Even soy sauce marinades can make mush out of beef if left soaking in it for too long. Simple brining marinades like salt, sugar, a little flaver and a good soak in a vacuum for about 2-4 hours will work nicely. The thicker the meat, the longer it should soak. One of my favorites on the grill in summertime is a marinade made of lime juice and a few other herbs. Chicken breasts are marinaded in it for about 30-60 minutes and they come out really tender. Red wine vinegar is OK as a marinade, but again, because of the high acid, a very short soaking is needed. I don't know what a potato would do in a red wine vinegar, but must assume it would turn dark and be like a potato salad without the added dressings.

call foodsaver, they really are good folks i had liquid in mine and they replaced it. no charge . utill found the secret , is to put them in the freezer for about 10 minutes before sealing them it doesn't like liquid........ i set the food in the bag, set it on a shelf r baking sheet and let them freeze for a short time, and it does the trick

On the subject of oxygen absorbers..... I used a FoodSaver a couple decades for home food storage before being introduced to oxygen absorbers, but I do have oxygen absorbers and occasionally use them for dry packing instead of using my FoodSaver, but I prefer the FoodSaver. You can also use them together. Add an oxygen absorber AND vacuum seal the jar, or add an oxygen absorber to a mylar bag and use your FoodSaver to seal a mylar bag for long-term storage. There are food storage books like "Dinner Is In The Jar" by Kathy Clark or "The Gourmet Food Storage Handbook" by Stephanie Petersen (aka Chef Tess Bakeresse - she has lots of videos so check out her web site), using canning jars or mylar bags for making a whole meal and vacuum-sealing the jars using either an oxygen absorber or FoodSaver. Using these recipes you can quickly make 30, 60, or 90 days worth of meals. Chef Tess Bakeresse has recipes for individual size meals that work great for hubby to take to work in his lunch. Set up an assembly line with freeze-dried food, fill jars, pop in an oxygen absorber, put on the lid and ring and you've got your own "convenience" foods ready for storage. I would never suggest oxygen absorbers over a FoodSaver because you get so many more uses out of the FoodSaver. I use a lot of bags, especially for frozen foods. I have many of my silver serving pieces vacuum-sealed in FoodSaver bags so they never tarnish. I use the double-bag trick mentioned above. I'll portion things in inexpensive fold-top sandwich bags, quick freeze them, then repack them into a FoodSaver bag. I got a free box of Ziploc Perfect Portions bags and love them for using as the inside bag. I freeze Sloppy Joe mixture, pasta sauce, soup, stew, chili, the meat mixture for Stroganoff, homemade applesauce, etc. in plastic storage containers. I use containers that are for 1 or 2 servings. When completely frozen, pop them out of the containers. Stack the "cubes" into a FoodSaver bag and seal shut. Now all your plastic containers can be used for something else. But back to oxygen absorbers. They come in different sizes to accommodate different size containers or volume of food. For a quart jar use a 100cc oxygen absorber in the top of each jar. They cost about 1-cent per packet for the 100cc size (prices vary, so do the math) and are NOT reusable. There are charts available for how many oxygen absorbers are required for different volumes of food if you do a search on the subject. For more information check out the link below. "westelle "I am interested in finding out how you made out with the FoodSaver Customer Service Dept.!! Did you get the part that you needed?

I have an old model, professional, that I bought from QVC years ago. It is still giving me faithful service, but the heat sealing strip works only partially after working well for all those gone-by years. It should just snap out and a replacement should easily snap in. I called FoodSaver on two occasions to try and get a new part, but all I get from the representative is a sales pitch, that I need to buy a whole new machine! At the present time I just can't afford to purchase a new machine, so I struggle along with what I have. It still works! The sealing strip hasn't yet given up completely...only partially. So I have to seal the bags on one side and then flip over and repeat to make the seal complete.

Soooo...after my tale of woe, am interested in finding out if you actually got the part that you require ?

Lisbet: I called the number Lynn gave me and had no problem ordering the new gaskets. Alissa didn't try to sell me one extra thing, for which I was truly grateful. I ordered 2 sets for a total of $10.90.

I'm so glad that it worked for you and you got the part needed.

Am going to give it another try. My FoodSaver is an indispensable part of my kitchen equipment. Can't complain,though...it has lasted me a long, long time. When my budget will allow, will not hesitate getting a newer, more modern FoodSaver. It is a well made quality product!

Why do I have a problem with this?

I have been following this thread because my FS sucks but doesn't seal so I'm thinking the heat strip died. In the interim, I got the hand held FS so I can at least seal FS containers and the marinate-or.

Anyone have words of wisdom for heat strip issues? Is this replaceable like the gaskets?

Westelle, isn't that frustrating about the up charges for s&h?

I have the professional (original) and there has always been a problem with it. Each time I take it out to use it - it does not work correctly. They replaced it once and the I paid for a reconditioning. How do I know if it is the vacuum motor again, or gaskets?

where can I get another motor if I need one?

i have an old model v1080 couldnt find parts on web site. i called and was informed they dont make parts for that anymore. i dont do business with people who dont support their products. i think they want you to buy new model.

I e-mailed foodsaver because I needed a gasket for the older V300. They wrote back that model is discontinued and they don't have parts for it. They suggested I upgrade to a new unit.

I could not find out how to start a new thread, but here is my problem:

I have a FS model #800. It had a minor problem, which I can live with, but I would like to fix it. The the little blade that slides across to cut the roll (or bag) will not cut. I cannot remove or dis-assemble this part. Can it be replaced?

Graydog - I recently found that calling foodsaver was a lot easier than navigating their web site. The web site has parts but they don't necessarily cross reference all compatible models. That said, if they don't sell it... I have a v840 that I broke and I'm not sure if I can repare it. If you can figure out how to PM me and if I can figure out how to read it, I'd be happy to send you the part of I determine mine is not fixable and together we determine they're compatible.

Graydog, my blade stopped working recently but have not looked or called for replacement yet. Though it does work in the other direction so i slide it across to the left side and it works. It works in both directions...just awkward having to use it differently now.

I've bought new gaskets online...might just be tricky to find the 'parts' page but it is there.

A good way to test your gaskets is to take them out and soak them in warm water for an hour or so...put them back in moist and see if it works. It worked for me but stopped working once they dried out so i ordered new ones and an extra spare set.
