What do you do with your paint samples?
Comments (12)In my area, latex paints can be allowed to dry out and then tossed in the regular garbage. Our local haz/mat suggests pouring it over shredded paper for faster drying. Oil based still needs to be taken in to the local haz/waste disposal locations. Since I use mostly latex paints, I let them dry out and toss. I'm currently in de-clutter mode!;)...See MoreWhat to do with paint can samples? Drowing in them!!
Comments (14)Thanks to all of you for the great ideas. I'm donating quite a few cans to my kids schools. juddgirl2: You're welcome to take as many as you need. What colors are you interested in? I can tell you if I have it or not. I'll wait to hear from you before I bring them to the schools. I have SW & BM colors, a few Dunn Edwards and Vista. emagineer: Are you in my area? If so, come on down. Email me privately and I can give you my address. msrose: OMG, I feel like I've been at this for a lifetime. Here are their choices. DD(16) BM Palladian Blue HC-144 DD(10) BM Pink Bliss 2093-70 They both agreed on BM Gossmer Blue 2123-40 for their jack-n-jill bathroom. DS (14) still undecided, but we're sticking with grays and gray blues. He likes all the really dark blues, going for that cave look that's so appleaing to teens, yuck. I'm going to pick something a little lighter and blame it on the painters. Powder Room BM Hancock Gray HC-97...See MorePaint gallon not match sample paint or paint chip - what to do??
Comments (18)I have the Ivoire formula for Emerald matte on the can and it is correct according to the official recipe for Ivoire paint in a gallon (double checked). The base paint is correct too. But the gallon colour does not even resemble the paint chip or the Color-to-Go. When I discuss the mismatch gallon, I'm directly comparing the paint they gave me spread on the paint chip - and the gallon Ivore was not even close to the same colour as the paint chip. Quite truthfully, it is like a lighter version of Believable Buff - I'd accept it as a match for Believable Buff before I'd accept it as a match for Ivoire!! In terms of how the real Ivoire looks on my walls (the paint chip/Colour-To-Go version, not the mismatched gallon paint), I have painted Ivoire on a lot of test walls, so I have a good feel for how it appears in my house - yellow with apricot undertones and I absolutely love it. This faulty Ivoire looks like a kind of muddy/murky beige-yellow - not the same colour at all. I was flabbergasted when the gallon of Ivoire looked like an entirely different dingy beige colour - even the guy who mixed it thought it did not seem correct but he wanted me to take it home and see how it looked at home in the lighting it would be in....See Morehow many paint samples before you made the decision?
Comments (30)It depends... For both my kids' rooms I was able to pick paint colors using only the paint chips, moving them around and putting them right next to critical elements (trim, stained-glass window, etc.) to see what worked the best. I did get a sample of the one we picked for our son's room just in case, but not for our daughter's room, mainly because Glidden didn't offer the small samples. I'm thrilled with the colors in both their rooms. On the other hand, it took me a LONG time (over a year) to find just the right color for our living room, which has stained trim and is open to the rest of the main floor. I think I ultimately tried 3 samples on the walls. I really thought the 3rd was going to be "it" and almost didn't bother with the sample, but am so glad I did because when I got it up there on the wall it affirmed that one of the first samples I put up there was actually just the right color and saturation. I didn't have any sample paint left because they were the little 2 oz. pots, so by the time I put 2-coat swatches on 3 walls, the sample was used up. I also had to get multiple samples to decide on an exterior trim color, but again they were the tiny sample paints so there wasn't anything left of them. I wish more companies offered the tiny samples. When we used Sherwinn-Williams paint 10 years ago on our hallways and open areas, we had to buy the 1-quart samples, and still have leftovers of the 2 samples in our basement. I keep meaning to go through all our paints and put the ones I'll never use on the Craigslist free site, but haven't gotten around to it yet......See MoreChristopher Nelson Wallcovering and Painting
