HELP - Slumber party activity ideas needed

We're having a slumber party for my DD's 9th bday. Probably about 6-8 girls. It starts at 3:00 p.m. I was thinking we'd probably have pizza - should I order it or let them make their own? Also was thinking about maybe making cupcakes and letting them decorate them but I need more ideas for activities.

I'm assuming you're picking the girls up right after school. Would you rather let them go home & come over around 6 p.m. to give them time to decompress from their day at school? Just an idea, if the geographial logistics aren't impossible.

I wouldn't get that hung up on having activities planned. Girls that age like unstructured play & to visit with each other in a relaxed atmosphere.

You can let your daughter pick out a couple of videos @ the rental store that they can watch in the evening.

Manicures are fun. Get out the plastic cover for the table & get small bottles of polish & let them do their nails.

One game that my DD & her friends have always liked is the "rollers & cold cream" game. They have to completely roll their hair up in 6 sponge rollers & put cold cream on their faces. Whoever gets done first wins.

I'd order Pizza in. There's something special about ordering & waiting for it to come.

Sounds like fun! My daughter is having a sleepover in 2 weeks (she's 12). I think they're planning on chalking & forking boys houses & probably making crank phone calls. OH, to have a 9 year old again!

I agree about not trying to have too many structured activities. Ordering pizza in will be a special treat for the girls. I think the manicure idea is great. I am sure they will want to talk about boys, tell late night ghost stories, etc. The rental movies are a good idea. Plan on having popcorn ready. The next morning I am sure they would love something like chocolate chip pancakes. That was always a fun treat when we had sleepovers as kids.

I wasn't going to be able to go to this so it doesn't really concern me - and I am truly sorry to say that - but one thing caught my eye - "She was already worrying about not having her garden in good shape" - I'm exactly the same way and I wish I could remember how it is to visit someone else's place; I don't see the mulch that needs to be replenished, or the things that need to be moved or pruned or whatever when I visit! I'm the only one who sees that in my house and my garden, everyone else is impressed - and I think they're fools don't I?? :-) At someone else's home I know it's a work in progress and when I see something in someone else's garden that needs attention I don't feel so overwhelmed after all. What I will remember is their love and enthusiasm for their garden and new ideas I bring home with me for my garden. Ok, sorry to have gotten off track, I've been distractable all week... Suzanne

When my mother turned 70, we gave her a surprise party and wrote and performed a little musical of her life. She definitely loved that! But our family is into stuff like that. Yours may be more into art, writing, etc. For my 50th birthday, my husband contacted everyone he could think of and asked them to contribute a little anecdote for an album. He put photos in the back. I adore it. I recently did a "this is your life" slide show for a party honoring someone. Her family gave me photos. But in addition to the real photos from her life, we put in lots of downloaded photos with her face photoshopped in (always the same photo of her face, and always just a little too large). For example, when the narration was about her meeting and marrying her husband, there were a few of the two of them together, and then her with Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Homer Simpson, King Kong ... etc. It was really funny to think of things; she is a VERY refined and elegant lady, and we had her getting a tattoo, pole dancing, in a motorcycle gang, on a Tabloid cover, in the Sopranos -- like that. What made it funny was that we kept the narration perfectly straight and played very formal music behind it. It was very well received, and the guest of honor loved it. Do you think your mom might like something like one of these ideas? I, too, think I would prefer something like that to making the guests play games. I think it is so nice of you to make a party for your mother. You don't need to "program" every minute with games, though -- your mom's friends will enjoy socializing with each other.

What an article. I am over-whelmed at the moment. It has hit very very close to home. My Dad was in much the same condition/mental state for 6 months before he died and I was his caregiver. I moved to FL to live with Mom and Dad and take care of him. His dementia was brought on by something a pd caregiver did/gave him . She had been in their home for 1 month. She and her spouse were attempting to get my Dad to sign checks behind Mom's back. By the time Mom realized what was going on and my DB and I got there all was lost. Except for the horror and the bills the incompetent medical community that we had to deal with. My only fault with the article is his ending. There is nothing you can do personally that will hasten your own end except suicide. If you decided to do this while you are still able then so be it. But...if you wait...ah...then who will you designate to carry out your wishes. Will they ? When will be the right time ? Tomorrow...OK...what if it is a good day ? See what you are facing. I could suggest getting toy cars, montser trucks or even dump trucks but in the end the kids really need to get out and play. I have 3 girls 3,2,& 6 mos. My toddlers have insane energy, I find they are the noisiest and hardest to handle the more time they have to spend indoors and I have a HUGE house. You said they rely on the family to babysit. Why don't you suggest to the family to take the boys to a school playground. That's what I do (until my fence and swingset are finished) so the boys can release their energy. Or if they have a fenced in back yard buy a sandbox and have it shipped(one with a cover so animals won't use it as a litter box) Try to suggest things in a non confrontational tone. When my family trys to 'tell' me how to raise my children I would tune them out too. I understand travel we don't do it a lot but 3-4 times a year we travel 6-9 hrs south one way to visit family or go to fairs. As long as the kids can get out and just stretch their legs they don't give us too much struggle(we give them toys to play with but they always just end up hurling them at us or each other!) But what we do try is if we pass farms or even just houses we try to point out things like animals-cows-horses- dogs- cats- even wild animals, cars,trucks, tractors and sometimes even signs

Another good treat is Rice Krispie Treats! I have 2 cousins that STILL call me (they are 27 and 26:) and tell me that they will never forget how we always made rice krispie treats every time they came over!! You can make them with fruity pepples too:).

I'd say order pizza too. Some of the girls will want just plain cheese pizza anyway. It's also pretty easy to let them make their own banana splits or sundaes. Movies are great to get them to wind down. My kids love Act II's microwave popcorn "buttery kettle corn". It's a little sweet. I always worry that the kids will get bored but they don't. The cold cream (would coolwhip work?) and rollers would make great photos though. I love that idea!

Thanks everybody. My almost 9yr old DD also told me not too many activities, they'll just have fun on their own. So that makes it a lot easier on me. I will order pizza. I'm going to get Twister too. I thought they'd have fun playing that and some movies.

Last year my daughter who turned 8 had her 1st sleepover. They had a blast. I set up 2 crafts / braclet decorating and pillow fabric painting.They ate store bought pizza, carrots and fruit. I think the biggest hit was the when I gave each girl a folder file filled with color pages I had found on the internet. I also made word search puzzles having to do with the school they attended. When the girls felt a little lost on what to do they would grab their folders and color/marker away. They watched Mary Kate and Ashley movies (they had no idea who the girls were. I also bought mini flashlights (oriental trading company) for each girl. I think each age group likes different things: for an eight year party I'd keep them busy, However for a 9 year old I can see how they would like more free time to just hang out.

Ummm... this post is from 2002!
That nine year old is now 18 and probably won't care about "Mary Kate and Ashley movies", coloring and word searches.....
