Our very small (narrow and quite short) hallway -- and we only have an main "entrance" here too -- hardly room for the door to open!

Similar to what Jan shows, my halls tend to have a pair (or trio) of pictures that relate to each other. I prefer them to be the same size and have the same framing. That way, they look intentional and not just a space I'm trying to fill. There's also all kinds of metal wall art that comes in sets and can easily be found on Ebay or your area home accessory stores like Homegoods.

When it comes to spaces like you're describing, I don't like to put undersized items in small-ish spaces. I think it only accentuates the issue I'm trying to correct.

I don't think of the large open space between my foyer and kitchen as a hallway per se, but more as the entrance into the kitchen/GR area.

Since the wall/area looks into the kitchen, and is next to my open hutch, i've used a single row(vertical)of white platters. If I didn't have glass-front cabs w/white dishes showing, and black/white transferware on the hutch, the platters might not have been white. If you have some interesting dishes, start there, or visit your local thrift/discounts stores to start your 'collection.' I use my white stuff all thru the house and never tire of it. ;o)

Our hallway isn't large either, but we converted the hall closet into a mud room and that helped to open it up a bit. I'd like to hang a collage of family photos along the longer wall, but DH is afraid they may get knocked off the wall when we carry larger items into the house.

Carlieinnnj-----you pegged it perfect, my decor is much too small for the space it's trying to fill. I never knew that until this very moment. It's exactly true, my stuff is much too small.

Patty cakes----the dish idea might work but I am afraid the hall might still be too narrow. One inch out of place with someone talking might cause them to hit anything fragile I hang. Our ceilings are only 7 1/2 ft so it seems so much closer than it may be. But it's a great idea if I can figure it out (i.e. keep people out of my halllway!) I already have some nice pieces...

luckkirish----your entry area is awesome!!! I wish ours could be so fancy. Your bathroom looks so great from the pics. Where it says "bloom" near the bench, what is hanging there? It looks like towels but I am not sure.

family pictures (that you can only enjoy walking by)

Only place for them in this house *sigh* upstairs or even on the stairs (walls) would get even less viewing time.

I have a portrait gallery of various family snaps. I have about 6 picture frames all grouped together so even though it includes several photos it reads as one unit as they are all grouped together in a large rectangle. One of these days I plan to update with sephia prints and black frames--meanwhile it's mostly the family that sees it and they are a source of viewing pleasure.

One tip I learned on this forum in a narrowish hallway is to only put pics along one wall, not both.

Cathrugg, thanks so much! I wanted a "Mud room" in the worst way and this was the only space available. I also wanted it to actually look like a room and not a closet when it was done, so we carried the wood flooring into it, removed the doors and built in the entry and turned what used to hold a shelf up into chair railing.

That thing under the bloom sign has 3 baskets. We use it for scarves, gloves and so on. It's really just a magazine rack I got from Ikea. There's two, one for each side so we have plenty of storage. I also found a black rug that fit perfectly so the boot tray under the bench isn't even noticeable

All these pictures are from when we were still working on our hallway. We've since touched up the paint, hung more pictures and laid a rug down. I don't think our hallway is any wider than yours. You should post a picture to get ideas.

Beautifully decorated halls!

Well, I guess it would depend upon how you decorate, but I like the idea of a pretty plate display a lot!

Our hall is long, but broken up by a lot of large door openings. Since I kind of like an eclectic look, my 'art' doesn't really have a rhyme or reason, other that I liked how it looked against the wall color and in the hall. Right now I have a picture of a cottage in the woods over our bench, that may change. It's antique mall find and I paid a pittance for it, but I like that it was painted by some regular ole person out there at one time, I like that it's a cottage and I like the colors. On the opposite wall is a vintage portrait of my grandmother, surround by brown transferware .. this wall the kitchen opening is on, a few feet away.

Some great ideas above or you could do a mirror collage or just a single mirror.

ksoxgrl - Thanks, that is Grass Cloth by Behr. We used it in our walk in pantry, at the end of the hallway and in the mud room to tie all the spaces together and we've been really happy with it. It's a bolder color but not over powering.

Your hallways are all so gorgeous! I will take and post pics tonight so you can see what I am dealing with. But please know, it's nothing as nice as you have shown here.

We just have a large wall, not really a hallway. I usually put something seasonal in the niche.
