Hallway Runner
Comments (12)The "marble" is actually the brick hearth, sprayed with drywall mud (but I'm glad it looks like marble in pictures!). Most fireplaces in New Orleans don't work like normal wood burning fireplaces - they used to hold coal and then, in all the houses I've ever owned, seemed to be converted to some (must have been inefficient and dangerous to boot) gas operated space heaters. They were still in this house and operational when we bought it. So no, the fireplace doesn't actually work (the chimney was capped off in the attic). Because the hallway/bathroom was once a bedroom, the wood floor was already cut to accommodate the fireplace hearth, so we didn't mess with it. All we did was remove the mantlepiece to facilitate traffic flow. I think I will go with a runner and tuck it over the hearth with a little padding to even out the edge of the transition. That seems like a workable solution to warm up the space and not crowd the runner (or the walkers in the hallway!). Maybe next you all can help me figure out to do with the incredibly nice rug from Turkey that my in-laws gave us as a wedding present to go in our formal Garden District living room. Sadly, try as I might, I cannot find a place in this house where it will go...unless I just decide to not worry about it being smack dab in the middle of the traffic pattern of my storefront (it's a pale gold/spa blue/spring green/cream oushak)! Right now it's in our bedroom (all wrong) and the only other place it could conceivably go is in our breakfast room (under the table...where we eat neatly, but I've noticed my daughter's friends...not so much!) At 8x10 it always seems too big or too small for the space. Does that make sense? Moving house is so difficult. How do other people keep the same beautiful stuff for years and in many different homes?!...See MoreI bought the carpet runner for our hallway
Comments (10)Thanks everyone for all the nice comments. Deb, as far as the positioning of the rug -- it's a little bit of a challenge. If I pull it down at the end of the hall where the bedrooms are, it REALLY ends up in the middle of the doorway to the kitchen at the other end. We'll live with it as it is positioned right now and see if there are any problems with it being in the way. Or were you thinking more along the line of if ending at an awkward spot and not looking right?...See MoreHow do you use your hallways?
Comments (10)We have three hallways, and two of them connect to form a sort of double-hall area. The hall near the front door is 4'x9'. One of the long sides has built-ins running the entire length -- a teeny tiny powder room (think airplane size), a coat closet, and a cabinet (two drawers are used as a desk, and the shelves below store table linens). I had lighting installed in the upper portion of the cabinet because the hallway gets very little light. The opposite wall has a console table (with drawer for gloves) and a small lamp. This hall adjoins the center hall, which is 7'x9'. The stairway leads off this area, as well as openings to the kitchen, dining room, and living room. There is space for a small drop-leaf table and two extra dining chairs along the walls. I bring this table and chairs into the dining room for larger dinner parties. There is a hanging light in here, and this area often gets used as a catch-all for my purse, mail, etc. The upstairs' hall is irregularly shaped; there is an open area which measures about 7'x9', and a 3'x6' path near the top of the stairs. There are openings to three bedrooms, a sitting room, bathroom, and two closets. At the top of the steps there is a built-in bookcase where the ceiling slopes down low. In the open area is a built-in cabinet with drawers, which I use for clothing. I have a table lamp on the cabinet, and there is a ceiling light and skylight. All of the hallways are used to display various types of artwork, mirrors, maps, and pottery. Although this house is less than 1500 sq. ft., the configuration of the halls makes the space seem larger and the built-ins help with storage. Tina...See MoreWool Carpet - do you have it? Do you like it?
Comments (20)I have not got wool wall-to-wall myself, but grew up with all wool wall to wall. It was very durable, held up under 5 kids and a couple of cats. Still, for a kids room I would say perhaps a room sized rug (can have the edges bound of the carpeting that you like) or even smaller (for ease of removal to clean). I have had several wool area rugs that were stained by kid's art supplies - marker, crayon, paint, nail polish etc. and have had good luck removing the stains using my favorite stain remover. When they got dirty enough overall, it was easy to take them outside on a sunny day, hang over the patio chairs, soap them up with rug cleaner, then rinse with the hose. - they get much cleaner than from a carpet machine (and you don't pull out half the fibers either) and dry pretty quickly in the sun. Word of warning - that only works with a loomed rug (ie woven into backing). Those rugs that are fibers glued to a backing will fall apart if gotten wet - & that includes using a carpet cleaning machine on them....See Morecyn427 (z. 7, N. VA)
