Has anyone bought from Steve's Blinds and Wallpaper?

Hi all,

I saw a recommendation here for Steve's blinds and wallpaper and order for 6 rooms from them in the end of January. I got calls about a few things that needed to be clarified or changed, but still don't have any WTs delivered yet. I am not ready for install since there is still a lot of painting to do, so was not too worried. However, I googled their name to make sure I had it right for the other post about WT companies, and found a website with a slew of consumer complaints about them.

I'd love to hear real world experiences from GWers and am hoping all will be well with my large order (over $1k)...

I ordered *custom* blinds locally and the items took 6+ weeks for most of them. My shutters took about 12 weeks.

The end of Jan. wasn't very long ago. Did their web site say they ship immediately?

They promised within 48 hours or it is free, but there is a disclaimer about not being responsible for mfr delays or backorders (or anything wider than 96"). I ordered 6 different WTs, only 1 wider than 96" and not all the same (but they are all white) so think that at least some should have arrived by now. I emailed them and will follow up with a call tomorrow. Out of 5 different wts, from 3 different mfrs, they can't all be mfr delays or backordered and if they were, shouldn't I have been kept abreast of what is going on?
I ordered from the Steve's Exclusive Collection but was told by cs that it was 3 different mfrs. Some are blinds, some shades and a set of verticals.

I'd like to second what pebbles said about GIA certificates. At the higher end of the diamond world, stones are traded based strictly on certificates. They are that important. I'm another one who did a good deal of research a few years back. The way the market is structured, there are cities such as Antwerp and NY and sources in Russia and Israel where the market is centered and the best stones are traded and cut. There are wholesalers who buy stones, make up the rings and then sell them -- even to the high end stores like Tiffanys and Cartier though those often have exclusive styles. Harry Winston has their own workshop upstairs above the store where they make some pieces. But if you are going for a stone larger than 2 carats and with good cut and color -- pebbles again is quite right, chances are you are not going to do very well outside a big market. Even some discounters here have trouble getting larger stones of good quality. Many local jewelers are clueless about diamonds no matter what they say. The industry is structured on fixed pricing per carat, clarity and color. There's a publication used in the wholesale market that determines this and changes weekly or monthly (can't recall). Then there is cut, which is an eye thing developed only by extensive looking and relationships with the 'better" dealers who get the better stones. Point is, there are regional diamond centers in big cities such as Chicago and elsewhere, plus the online folks. With every layer of distance from the source there is an upcharge. Pebbles also makes a really good point about resale. The only fallback anyone has is to buy the best color, clarity and largest carat size you can afford from a name jeweler such as Tiffany, Cartier, Winston, Bulgari etc. as these command a premium if you resell them at auction. But you will pay retail and those brands command premium prices. I had a Cartier engagement ring that I resold at auction after many years and got a good price. But it was registered there with a number and I had retained the original invoice that stated the specs. I had worn it a lot and the engraving had worn off so I took to to them and they reengraved their name in the ring It was a pretty ring and I was able to sell it at auction advantageously because it was a prestige brand. But that's the only reason to pay retail (though styles go in and out of fashion and even values of the prestige brands fluctuate accordingly). If you are going for a larger stone than 2 carats then I would recommend a ton of research and asking everyone you know so you can get through the chain and as close as possible to the source. It might also be a good idea to check around on jewelry auctions where engagement rings are sold with certificates as you can sometimes do a bit better. My youngest brother got engaged two years ago. They had shopped extensively and he really knew his onions, plus the style she wanted and what he could afford. By making the right wholesale connection and shopping in NY (i.e. in a source market) rather than in Arizona or California, he was able to buy a ring that was a carat larger with the same color and clarity, and a better cut within his budget. The dealer was happy to deal with him because he knew exactly what he was buying and knew how good the price was and didn't dither over making the decision.

Thanks for the advice! That is a beautiful ceiling. It must have made your back and arms tired to install it though! I can't even imagine! I am very much a perfectionist. I am not the most patient though! that is where my husband comes in. The last paper I installed was about 70 dollars a roll. It was a commercially made paper however it was a copy of a pattern found in a historic house. At first I thought I made a huge mistake (as it is a "shiny" wallpaper and you could see every bubble) My husband told me to let it dry fully and when it did it looked beautiful. Now, we have plaster walls. I always paint with wallpaper primer first. However, sometimes there are hairline cracks and little bumps I just don't see. I feel them when I put the paper up sometimes. Is this a huge problem for this paper? Also I have always smoothed the paper by hand and I tend to smooth and fuss too long. I just don't need to be working on one piece for so long. I have always smoothed by hand because I can't find a wallpaper brush that isn't stiff and sharp. Have any of you found a nice, softer brush? thanks, renee

Yes, I did all my closets in this house with either wallpaper I bought cheap or borders. Now, why? splash of fun wallpaper was easily cleaned over painted walls dents did not show as easily (small - made by wood hangers) not snags or fabric pulls All my closets that have custom wood shelves in them, have wallpaper covering them. even painted wood snags sometimes, so I have wallpaper on the shelves where linens sit, my sweaters. I have put in some of the wire shelving in the kids' bedrooms, but I still have wallpaper in them. the wood shelves with wallpaper on them are smooth, I can wipe them down as needed. Try it in a linen closet. You can rip out all you have in there and build the shelves the HEIGHT your towels or sheets need, then cover the walls, then cover the shelves (underside, too). ps... I do not like the wire shelving for actual shelves in bedroom closets! fabric falls thru and the hangers catch them!

I just checked my stored mail and found that I ordered the sample from American Blinds and Wallpaper. Still have it and it measures about 20"x17". That was way back in March of last year and brought back all the "fun" memories of building a new house at the top of the market at the same time I was selling our old one at the bottom. Yeesh! All worked out though and I sold it without a realtor. But man, I wouldn't want to go through that again. BTW, I have an blank powder room just screaming for some paper.....

Thanks Steve. I was getting worried that I had not received anything. I ordered in time to get a special of yours and had not noticed the shipping guarantee (was in the grip of the flu as well). It has been 2.5 weeks and I got a call this Thurs or Fri about my order about options, and it made me wonder why it took so long for someone to notice that I had ordered options that were incompatible with the sizes and also why the options were allowed by the website at the time of the order.
I have had a bit go wrong with my reno and I would love for something/anything to go smoothly!

Update:
I spoke to someone in customer service yesterday and they are working on getting my order out. I received one wt this a.m. out of the 6 ordered.
I asked for a discount because they did not live up to the shipping guarantee as promised and am awaiting word on that because she needs to speak to a higher up.
In the meantime, they called this a.m. to let me know that the thermal liner I ordered on 1 shade is not available and that I'd have to change my option on that one. It is 3 weeks after my order, so I am disappointed that they are just noticing that now. I was under the impression from the above posting and email I received that my order was being taken care of, only to find out another detail had slipped through the cracks.
I am trying to be patient but I have had too many snafus in too short a time period. The fact that my kitchen was only half delivered last week and then I got stood up yesterday on the redelivery, and since I was shorted on my kitchen/den floor, which install has now been delayed until Fri, it is hard not to be very testy. I have been dealing with customer services, missing time at work and neglecting other things that need doing. We are so close, yet so far from done.
I will keep you posted how this gets resolved.

Very disappointed with the customer service at this company, I ordered wallpaper on Jan 5th and still have not recieved!!! I have contacted customer service several times and only 1 responce saying that they are working with the manufracture. I tried calling this morning to cancel my order and the number is out of service and their website has been down for 3 days. Not sure what kind of business this is? I have ordered from this company before and never had a problem, but this time is a nightmare!!!!

I have ordered from Steve's three different times and have always received an exceptional product, quickly, and for a great price. The first time a roller shade arrived damaged and Steve's promptly sent out a replacement for free. Can't ask for more.
