faron--BM Advance vs. Ace Cabinet&Trim--waterborne alkyds both

Hi,

I'm wondering if you could give your experienced professional opinion about these two trim paints -- I was very surprised to see that the Ace Cabinet & Trim is also a waterborne alkyd, same as the BM Advance. The Ace folks said they could match my colors, too. Is Ace just as good as the BM, if you've tried it? TIA.

Yeah-

The ACE C&T actually came out in late '07 actually! So it's been 4.5 yrs. now!
The BM paint is newer obviously, and probably more expensive, but I'm not sure.

Which one's better....?!?!
* Well....Some of it depends on prep., how good you are with technique, equipment, etc.
* I haven't used the BM. It may be a hair better...but it depends on many things, as I said.
* The ACE may be a better $$Value, depending on the BM costs, any sales, etc.
* I like the way the ACE applies & levels though!
* My fave though is the FPE-ECO as I babble about sometimes! It's another Waterborne-Alkyd. It's damn-near addicting!
* I could also hit most colors in the ACE C&T!!

Sorry for no "definite" paint answers!!
Like with cars...if you compare 6 similiar sedans, you'll get many different answers as to who's best!!!

Ah, o.k...your answers do help. Except that you've now introduced the FPE into the equation : ) (I didn't know about it before). I'm betting it's more expensive than either, though...I'll call the local distributor and see, and I'll look up your old posts re the FPE and see what you have said about it. Thanks very much for your help. I have a lot of trim to paint, and we're matching the trim to the color of the room (modern), so I'll have a fair amount to purchase--I know, not the smartest way to go about it, but I do want the trim just to be a sheen of the same color, rather than a separate line of its own. Thanks again!

Advance is not a replacement for WB Satin Impervo, it's a different product altogether. WBSI is an acrylic, Advance is a waterborne alkyd (cleans up with soap and water). Both can produce excellent results but they go about it quite differently. WBSI handles like a typical 100% acrylic but is a bit thinner and prone to dripping if you overload the brush while Advance goes on like an alkyd - heavier with much longer open time. Both have a bit of a learning curve but it's worth the effort. As for mineral spirits, most brush makers suggest a final rinse in mineral spirits but it's not necessary.

Some good points in your post Liz! Considering your 2-coat 123 priming, neither paint should be raising the grain. Were these trials over the primed surface, or on "bare" wood doors? They are 2 different paints obviously... * For a new painter, the Aura will seem finicky/fast set-up times. You could add some of XIM's Latex Xtender to help it level better, and slow the set-up time. * The ACE Cabinet paint is a "Hybrid", meaning it's "Both" Latex paint, AND a harder-resin Alkyd polyrethane paint. * The ACE requires 24 hrs. between coats to level itself out, and harden-off enough for the 2nd coat. * Aura would be ready for 2nd coat in 2-3 hours. * I did my ACE sample-boards on some primed/sanded pallet boards. Yes, the cure time was kind of long with the BM advance too. It takes like a month to really harden. In fact, my hubby had to re-paint two of the grey drawers on my island next to my stools. I had used some leather cleaner and conditioner on the stools and, like a dummy, didn't pay attention to overspray. Of course, to my horror I saw all these weird looking drops all over two of the drawers. What did I do? My next mistake was grabbing a dry microfiber cloth to wipe up the spray (after I tried wiping it with a damp paper towel and the spots didn't go away). To my immediate relief, the spots went away... but then I realized I had actual scratches in the paint!!! It had only cured for about two weeks by this time. Fortunately, hubby was still in the process of painting other parts of the kitchen and he had some of the grey paint left over... so I had to lightly sand it down (just a scratch coat) and he was able to put another layer of paint on the fronts of the two drawers. That time I made SURE to let it cure for a month! LOL! The picture above that shows those drawers on my island were taken after that repair was made. ;)

I used SW pro classic on various pieces of furniture and I liked the results. Just remember it takes 30 days to cure. It is easy to repair with it. My grandkids left a glow stick on my cedar chest that was painted with SW. The glow stick leaked overnight and took everything off down to the bare wood in a spot. Who knew glow sticks was such a good paint/varnish stripper. All I did was sand the bad area and repaint the top and it was as good as new. If you nick the paint you just touch up with a small artist brush and since it is self leveling you never see the touch up.

I used Ace Cabinet paint a few years ago to paint a toy box. It was at least a month until I could put it in my daughter's room due to the smell. The paint turned out great but the smell was overwhelming.

This is another one of these-
"Individual sensitivity" issues for sure!

What smells like "H*ll" to me, may not be very noticeable to you, and vice-versa.
I didn't think the ACE C/D/T paint had much odor at all!

Take Zinsser's 123 Latex primer....GREAT primer.
I can't take the smell of it though...I won't use it!
I can use the C2-One primer (same type of primer) all day though! To ME...the C2 doesn't have much odor.

Fly-
Yeah....it's not the cheapest stuff on the planet, but if you prep right/sand, etc., you can have "show-stopping" trim-work IMO!
