I did a system with an Instant Hot (IH) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) into a single faucet. The RO also feeds the freezer for the ice maker. The water is not chilled, but at room temperature. It's only a minor inconvenience, because in order to have cold water you have to either use ice or store a pitcher in the fridge. I had originally considered a water chiller too, but after doing a little research, I found that not many recommend chilled and hot into the same faucet. I think one of the few systems available was from Everpure or something like that. But it was expensive. My system is set up to flow like this: Cold Pipe->RO->Faucet Cold Line->IH->Faucet Hot Line The faucet is vented and has a third line out so it feeds the IH, instead of the RO feeding the IH. After living with my system for almost a year now, I don't have any real complaints. I've only run out of IH and RO water once. That was the first time I entertained during the holidays. I got cute and made tea with the IH while also making coffee with the RO. This was also after serving drinking water from the RO throughout the party. RO takes a few hours to replenish and the IH shouldn't be run on empty. So I had to shut off the IH. Since then, whenever I entertain, I just use a kettle to boil water for tea. Then the IH to top-off or for other cooking needs. I got my IH and RO from Costco and the faucet is a Tomlinson that it designed for RO and IH. I've ordered a Filtered Insta-hot/Chilled system for our remodel. It's supposed to be delivered on Tuesday next week so I can't say anything about the quality, but I can tell you what/why I ordered. I looked all over, and wanted to find a single source to buy the entire system so that they could help verify the configuration and provide after sales support if needed (less fingerpointing). I finally chose Freshwater Systems because they had everything I wanted at a good price. Even though all of the components are important, the faucet itself was a driving factor because we wanted a modern looking faucet in black, and that's very hard to find. I ended up with the Waterstone 1400HC. They sell the Quick & Hot insta-hot system to go with that. For the chiller I chose the Proselect R1P, and for the filtration I'm using Everpure's H-104. The chiller required a pressure regulating valve and a check valve (they had some diagrams - just ok, I thought) to explain the setup. The thing that suprised me is that after flowing from the cold water valve to the filter, that first the water passes through the chiller, and goes up to the faucet. From there, the (now-chilled) water goes back down to the hot tank, then back up to the hot input on the faucet. To complicate things, I wanted to put the components in my basement instead of under the sink. Freshwater advised, and Waterstone agreed that the filter and chiller could go there, but the hot tank should be under the sink. Lissa- I just had a Franke Little Butler installed three days ago and I can't tell you how much we love it. The reason I chose it was that I wanted both the hot and cold water to be filtered, and at the time I was looking, Franke was the only company that did this that I found. (I bought the unit last year, yes it has taken THAT LONG to get to where we were ready to install it). The Insta-hot brand filtered the cold but not the hot water. Anyway, the unit is not that big-- the heater is a rectangular cube about 11x7 inches. The filter (it is a Franke triflow filtration unit) is a cylinder about 11 inches high by 2 inches in diameter. However, I don't have a separate cooling unit for the cold water, since the temp coming out of the cold tap is good enuf for me. Also, my fridge has filtered cold water for those times when it matters to me. But the Little Butler filter, heater, and my garburetor fit very comfortably in the sink cab, which is 36" wide. As for cost, when I was looking these units were quite high, but I bought mine from an ebay storefront with 100% positive feedback for about half the price I was quoted in the snazzy plumbing showroom (can't remember numbers now, it's been so long). They ALL filter the water first before it goes into the hot tank, if that is the set up you wish to have. It is a good setup. What one does is to branch off the filtered water line (output line) so that one branch becomes the input line to the hot tank. I hope this makes sense and is not too hard to understand and also not perceived as a putdown in anyway. It's obvious, once someone points it out to you. It's simple. But, if you need any other explanation, go ahead and ask. Of course I would agree if you asked why this is never mentioned anywhere. -- The kind of filter known as "RO" may be the kind that is deemed to produce water that gets aggressive with tanks, but it's not "RO water in this discussion of an Insta-Hot and a filter. I haven't seen "RO filters packaged together with Instant Hot water. "RO is Reverse Osmosis. -- So, the conclusion is that ANY Instant Hot and any filter that uses replaceable filters go well together. -- to find out a whole lot more, the keywords for a web search are "Anaheim Manufacturing" or anaheim manufacturing quick and hot This is the company that makes the tank which twenty other companies rebrand as their own. They also make faucets. They sell both, together. They also have filters. Hint hint. -- Email the companies you whose products you like and ask the simple question if you can branch off the filtered water to send one branch into the Hot tank, and if so, whether or not this is better or worse for the tank. -- Usually, since filtering removes organic gunk, it is considered really good to remove this gunk before letting the water sit in the tank. So, I would filter water first before putting it into the IHW tank. Hth.
