Instant hot water, large house tankless water heater
Comments (18)After ours was installed I stumbled across a company that makes an all in one unit called Eternal Hybrid (link below). You may want to contact them and see about getting the energy efficiency specs to go that route. I think Navien also makes an all in one system now too. I would think either company would be able to give you more accurate energy specs and better answer your question. The other thing to keep in mind is that without the loop (& pump), you are in effect wasting gallons of water waiting for the hot to kick in--think showers, sinks, etc. How much does the water wastage cost in terms of both water & sewer bills + the unnecessary waste of a resource? In addition to washing machines not pulling enough water through at a time to trigger the heater and then remain on long enough to actually get the water down the line to the machine, some dishwashers are having problems too. Here is a link that might be useful: Eternal Hybrid Hot Water Heater Site...See MoreInstant hot water dispensers -- too dangerous for kids?
Comments (17)Teaching kids about safety is a much better solution than only relying on a technical feature that inevitably will fail at the most inopportune time. My kids have been learning about dangerous everyday household equipment ever since they started to crawl. And when they started elementary school, we taught them how to safely use kitchen knives and basic power tools. It's an ongoing process, but most people give kids too little credit. They can learn a healthy respect for dangerous tools, and best practices how to use them safely. And as parents, we owe them to learn these fundamental life skills. Having said that, there is equipment that is unsafe by design; and there is equipment that isn't age appropriate. The former should simply be avoided altogether, and the latter requires house rules about who gets to touch it. I don't have an opinion on the safety of instant water heaters. Our house came with one, but we were never particularly happy with its operation. It was quickly removed and we went back to using an electric water kettle. But I understand that every household has different preferences....See MoreWall mounted instant hot water
Comments (11)I don't know the history of IHW on walls. There may have once been problems. First, about wallmounted regular faucets. Old-style wallmounts are available from Chicago Faucets and others. Nothing modern looking. Almost nothing with a single-handle mixer valve. Wallmounts in general are out of favor in the US and Canada. I see them in Australian web sites. And in web sites in foreign languages. Millions of thermostatic valves are installed in showers, in the wall, but not much is available in kitchen faucets. There are more bathroom faucets available as wallmounts. I suspect (I have no proof) that manufacturers tired of the panic support phone calls they used to get from people trying to install wallmounts. They require more fussing and finetuning. Then, there is the risk when the faucet has a moveable spout, as in kitchen faucets. It pivots left and right. Some people will yank it around roughly and ultimately someone will sue because his installation leaked behind the wall and he got sick from invisible mold, and it's the fault of the faucet not his misuse of the faucet. At the very least you can be sure that there will be a lot more hassle phone calls coming in over the years. Now, with an IHW you have a heat resistant tube that needs to be shielded and it's just so much easier if this is deckmounted and the tube goes from the tank to the spout through an approved installation hole in the counter. With wall-mount you have no way to know whether or not each specific install is done right or not. And you have to show to approval-granting certification companies that you have an approved way of installing it and that this is not prone to jerryrigging. (Impossible.) Bracing wallmounts inside studs is another never-ending topic. Why take on all this responsibility, support and hassle? Who needs the hassle? Wallmounts are going to cause problems (worries) that go on forever. You get the picture. Just sell deckmount faucets like everyone else. -- i get the impression that you don't know yet about the flexible heat-resistant tubing inside the IHW spout. This tubing is available for purchase. Comments (1)This unit is a lateral inflow instant tankless electric hot water heater faucet. It is designed primarily for those regions of the world that do not have central hot water and have to make it on demand. They can be used as an instant hot water tap at your kitchen sink for near boiling water for cooking and tea. They work by heating the water with a coil as it flows through the tap. They are fairly low-flow, and the hotter the temp is set, the slower they are. They are not commonly used in the U.S. where we prefer the faster flow of tanked hot water. As a faucet in a drinking water system, the unit has to meet all of the requirements of a faucet, including full certifications to ASME A112.18.1 and the North American lead free standards. Very few meet those standards....See MoreSherri Stein
