WOW! Maple syrup prices have sure gone up!

I buy mine from Costco, have been for years, to make maple fudge for the holidays. We just ran out so was there looking for it. They no longer carry their own brand, Kirkland, or at least not here. All they had was a new brand, Crest. I thought the price was high, 32 oz. $13.99 but had to have it so bought it. Then when I got home I looked it up in old receits. A little over a year ago I bought the Costco brand, 64 oz. $16.99! For three dollars more last year, I got twice as much. I sure hope they bring back their own brand.

I noticed the bottle was MUCH smaller, but the price wasn't! It was very bad news for our large family. I want the kids to use the natural syrup, but that little bottle won't go far for us.

It's expensive here too, we had an odd winter and spring. Usually the sap runs at spring thaw, but here we had a very early thaw in January, the sap started to run, then it got cold again, and the spring run was small and late.

Another of those agricultural adventures, Dad used to say farming was like playing poker with G*d. That includes maple sugaring.....

Ciao wayblinkfaster, So where are you? Canada is a big country, you know. I think you went too far in killing your extra plants. Next time, you might consider donating them to food banks, churches, or getting involved in a gardening group and participating in some plant swaps. I grow lots of extra tomato plants and I always find homes for them. Community gardens are also desperate for plants most days. Cheers and good for you on your successes, Julianna

Yes, I'm very relieved! And he's still tapping the trees, but not after this year. I don't care if I don't get anything in return for my sap; it's not something I would have used or even thought of otherwise. Someday my son will probably tap some of the trees. We used to love having our own maple syrup when his dad did it.

Shantharam...a lot depends on where you live...do you want stock, semi-custom, or custom...etc. This is probably too late for you, but I thought I'd try answering your question for you anyway just in case & maybe help others out as well! Ours are Omega semi-custom from EXPO Design Center. But if you check the Omega site you'll be able to locate dealers in your area. I suspect all cabinet makers have similar dealer locators on their websites. Many people have had great luck with small, local cabinetmakers...getting custom for the cost of semi-custom or even stock cabinets...BUT, be sure to check their work before committing. You do often get what you pay for! HTH!

I wouldn't think it would take a lot of water to make the syrup a bit less sweet, and I don't see the harm since its current state has had lots of water removed (use distilled so you're not adding other flavorants). The problem is that while you're diluting the sweet, you're also diluting the maple flavor. Why not try a different grade of syrup? Grade B (which is a differentiation label not a quality scale level) is dark and very maple-y. You could use less of it and get the same flavor as if you were using more of the "Fancy" grade.

I bought several 1/2 gals of the grade B from Currey farms this year. Their syrup won as Best of the year from the Michigan Maple Syrup Association. It's wonderful!!!! I love it for breakfast and it's great to cook with. Just last week I made Maple Pear Butter....yum!

It might not be the cheapest but the high quality is obvious.

Clare, I agree..I'm about at the point of need to buy more..and I noticed that it was a smaller jug for nearly as much..I didn't look close enough to realise it was half the size!!!! GRrrrrrrr....

Trader Joes sells the grade B as well, and I prefer the taste. When my husband was a child, his family tapped their own trees in Western Mass. Those were the days, he says.

I bought a huge container in the spring when the sugaring here was so terrible. I bought it before the price at my co-op caught up with the terrible sugaring. I thought it was a years supply, I had to get more midway through the summer. Maybe this year will be better.

Last weekend my daughter came home from college and we went shopping to stock her pantry. I paid $18 for 32 oz. of maple syrup at Sam's Club. I darned near had a heart attack! But it's still cheaper for me to have her cook her own breakfast than to eat in the dining halls so I bought it. I refuse to buy it for home. My next door neighbor sells the most wonderful honey for $4 a quart and it goes a long way so that's what we use at home.
