My Aunt Passed Away

My Aunt Joan passed away March 27 at 1:30 am in St. Louis, Missouri

My Aunt Joan was 86 years old which came as a surprise to me. LOL I thought she was only 81 years old! She was my Dad's youngest sister. Their Mom died when my Aunt Joan was 7 months old and because my Grandfather couldn't take care of 5 young children they were sent to live with their Mom's sister's excpet for my Aunt Joan who was adopted by friends in Michigan. My Dad and his brother ran away from their Aunt and went home to live with my Grandpa.

My Aunt Margaret always kept tabs on her little sister and part of the adoption was that my Aunt Joan had to visit her Mother's family in Windsor which she hated to do. She didn't like her Aunt's at all. LOL When she was old enough to stand up for herself she refused to go. LOL My Dad always kept in touch with his little sister too.

It's funny because even though my Aunt Joan didn't grow up with her sisters it was amazing how much alike they were right down to their mannerisms and the expressions they used and they were stubborn to boot. LOL I inherited that gene too. LOLOL

My Aunt Joan and Uncle Chuck moved their family to St. Louis and I would visit them often and actually took my first airline flight in 1974 to spend a week with them. I have been back many times since.

One of the last times I visited my Aunt Joan she wasn't very nice to me and I was hesitant to see her again but my cousin Kurt told me she had changed and wouldn't remember what she did and thankfully she didn't so we had a nice visit.

A couple of weeks ago my Aunt was in the hospital recovering from a fall when she had a massive stroke which left her totally paralysed. For the last 11 days she hasn't been able to eat or drink anything so we knew it would just be a matter of days. Her heart and pulse stayed strong though right to the end.

The visitation is today and the funeral tomorrow and I won't be able to fly to St. Louis. My Sister Marjorie was really close to my Aunt Joan and lived with her for many years and she can't get to the funeral either because she is out of town. I feel terrible that none of my family will be at the funeral.

I just want to thank you for the special thoughts and prayers you offered my Aunt Joan on my other post last week.

Sorry to hear of the loss of your dear Aunt Joan, Anne.

Unfortunately, one of the aspects of loving is the hurting when separation happens.

Which leads some to keep their distance - to avoid the hurt later.

Which means that they miss out on a lot of the closeness, loving and happiness in the meantime.

It's too bad that your family had the disruption that they had to deal with, long years ago ... often the actions that we do at one time have long-lasting consequences, don't they?

I'm sorry, too, that none of your family will be able to be there for the funeral.

Hi again, Though I do not know for certain they are peony seeds, I do have to say some peony seed pods are furry. Please see the link below. Just had my youngest son's nursery school graduation yesterday. They're WAY too cute! And 10 days ago had my oldest son's birthday party. Who plans these birthdays in the middle of gardening season?! Sheesh! What was I thinking?lol Shelley take the sick day, and go to the bakery(and possibly the liquor store too!). I picked up an ice cream cake for DS and the kids loved it! Bottom piece is technically buffet or sideboard (bottom) and hutch (top) if you want to get really fussy, but most people would know what you mean when you say hutch. That looks to be pine, or I suppose it could be dark-varnished maple. Either way, not a valuable piece; there are a lot of those out there and some have more useful configuration (drawers). You could probably get 100-200 bucks for it on Craigslist if you are patient (or lucky), but check what the asking prices seem to be on your local list - you could start higher. A used furniture dealer would probably take this off your hands, but give you very little for it. Corner cupboards seem to sit on craigslist for a long time in my area, very cool, but not popular. I agree it's something collectible, don't know your US brands of this era of furniture but that is a nice one. Is that a flip-down drawer? That is an unusual feature. What to sell it for... probably you could ask about the same as for the hutch to start with; see what offers you get. This you could probably get a vintage/antique dealer (higher end than "used") to take on consignment. Same with the table, of course. The china cabinet sounds lovely. Sounds like it has a home with your brother :-) But unless it is something really unusual (which I doubt from seeing the other pieces), those too are not that rare or valuable, maybe a couple of hundred bucks. Again, I see them sitting in stores and on craigslist for many moons and would undertake to get one anytime for $100. Karin L

Hello Anne

I am sorry you can't go to the funeral, but glad you got to see her again, after you two had some sort of problem.

This way, you both had a chance to reconnect, and you hopefully have mostly happy memories.

I remember when you flew to St.Louis the last time.

Take yourself a few hankies, and have a nice cry. It's good for the soul. Best remedy I came up with, when far away relatives passed away.

I just got off the telephone with a florist in Ballwin, Missouri and I ordered flowers to be sent to the funeral home. I ordered 2 large single orchids - the kind you would wear to a prom and the florist is going to display the orchids on river rocks in a glass cube. I found my Aunt's obituary in the St. Louis Post Dispatch newspaper online early this morning - I'm amazed that I remembered the name of the St. Louis newspaper my Aunt used to read. LOL
The obituary stated in lieu of flowers to make a donation somewhere but I thought I would like to send flowers as well.

I've contacted one family member from each of my Aunt's brothers and sisters so that they can relay the news to their siblings. Seems the only time we talk to each other these days is when a family member passes away which is kind of sad. Whenever we hear each others voices on the other end of the phone we know the news isn't going to be good. LOL

So sorry to learn this, Anne. My last Aunt passed away on March 5th of this year. Now her husband, my Mom's brother isn't doing well at all. Their oldest daughter passed away in December and their youngest daughter has been staying with them since 12-31-2007. She has really been going through so much with them both. (sorry to add all of this)
