My Late Aunt's Birdhouse

Hi everyone! My brother had received this birdhouse after my Aunt had passed away in the early 90's. Knowing I love nature and birds, he surprised me recently by gifting the birdhouse to me. I love the pale green color! You can see where the squirrels have chewed on the opening but that adds character to it! I will post a picture once I hang it. I have the perfect tree for it!!! I have the BEST brother! Kirk P.S. I'm posting a message on the Conversations side fo my brother...he's going through his third melanoma surgery in three months...

I love it too Kirkus!I don't have any big trees in my yard .Just a little Red Maple .So no where to really hang bird houses.I hope your brother makes out ok with his surgery.

VERY NICE INDEED! I love the color as well.. as a child I had 2 pair of clogs that were indeed my favorite.. one was a pale mint green (just like your house)and the other was sky blue.

Enjoy - can't wait to see it's final moving place LOL

Beautiful fabrics!! My dad passed when I was 22 and I was the oldest of 6 girls (still am lol). We kind of drifted away from his side of the family too. I moved back home and an aunt and uncle (his brother) moved back a few years later. I found out why we drifted - THEY FIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING! I avoid them as much as possible. Thanks for all your wonderful encouragement! A friend showed me the basics of these last winter using broken SouthWest pottery, and I adapted her style, but use the ceramic plates that I find here in California since I can't get the pottery. The roof is a slate-like rock that breaks into tile-like pieces that we find along the roadside hills here in the Northern California foothills. But if I didn't have that, I'd resort to other stones, or acorns or pinecone" leaves" or something else.

Praticalgal, that's *my* personal point of view(imo, see post)and my intent is not to project it on anyone else or argue about it. When I sold my condo in S Ca 8 years ago, I had one man, and 5 women as interested buyers. The women were very wishy-washy, needed to come back several times, and the one I *chose* to sell to, changed her mind 24 hrs later after a $100,000 'good faith' check. I threatened a law suit in which she would lose her $100k and she backed down. Even her own realtor told me of her indecisiveness. I had the same offer from another woman, but choose this one because she was older, recently divorced, was relocating from another state, and it was the first time she was on her own, making the decisions. I was trying to send her a message she needed to be responsible for her actions, as that's what real life is. It's only *my* opinion that women could have a more difficult time making a major decision, but it isn't written instone.

How lovely to do this for your aunt! You're wise to be strategic about how much work the rose would be and how much bloom there is for the effort. Tomatoes produce a very tangible and profuse benefit for the efforts involved, but sometimes there is a slow return on a rose. Of the three you mention being locally available, by far JFK is the hardiest for me. Neither Honor nor Full Sail has even pretended to overwinter for me in zone 5, thought Seil has had luck with them in zone 6. Sometimes roses that are at their limit of hardiness for your zones may be the ones that fade after a few years. I also don't find that PJPII is a strongly growing rose in any form (grafted or own root). Bolero and Paloma Blanca and Polar Express are all much more reliable bloomers as well as hardy roses for me, and I like the idea of Polar Express. Another rose that you might be able to find at a local store is Snowdrift, which is an Easy Elegance rose. This one is hardy in my zone 4 pocket of the yard and has now in its second year BURST into incredible bloom. I've seen very nice rebloom in other years so I think it would make a steady source of flowers for her, but it's not the best of cutting roses. However, the blooms are fully double and they start out looking cupped as the Austins do. It's also rock solid clean as far as blackspot goes, which is a huge issue for you in NJ. Mine is about 4' tall and wide, which may not fit in her space. Polar Express takes up less real estate and would be as resistant to disease I think for you. Roses Unlimited sells most if not all of these and their gallon-sized roses often come with blooms already on them, but they do take some settling in as opposed to big nursery pots of roses. Unique little bird house...Kirk...how do you attach one to a tree?...(It seems like nails would hurt a tree)...

Good question, Ashli! I live in the mountains in a real wooded area with lots of fir and pine trees on our property. When I purchased a bat house, I had that same question and asked a local tree farmer and my friends at an arboretum. They said to use galvanized, aluminum nails or screws as they won't rust, causing damage. If I remove the nails, fill the hole with tar.

What a great way to remember your aunt and have such a wonderful piece in your garden! I agree, the squirrel damage adds character to it. And the branch as the perch is a lovely touch. I hope your brother's surgery turns out well so he is able to continue giving you such awesome gifts for many, many years to come!

Now if I just had a wonderful brother like you and cindee11461!

Thanks Kirk!...I'll buy those nails...I have several bird houses that have just sit-around for a couple of years that I've wanted to attach to trees... Glad you posted...Sending a hug to you for answering..ha...

On mounting birdhouses - you can "tie" it to a tree by running wire around the tree or around where a branch branches off the trunk (sort of suspending the birdhouse from the branch). This may require two wires - one higher up on the birdhouse and one lower. The wire(s) used should be able to be lengthened as the tree grows. Using wire (if lengthened as the tree grows) is the least invasive for the tree. If using screws or nails growth needs to be considered as well. Screws are the better choice as they can be backed out more easily than nails. 3 or 4 years of tree growth can pull screws/nails right through a birdhouse. Yet another method is to hang a birdhouse to a tree similarly to hanging a picture in your home. Have some sort of hanger on the tree that attaches to the birdhouse. This can be as simple as a screw or nail in the tree that inserts into a hole drilled into the back of a birdhouse. I've thought of, and not yet tried, to drill a hole in a tree for a wooden dowel to hang a birdhouse from. I'm not savvy enough about tree health to know if this method would be OK for the tree. And, one more method, would be to attach a couple of hooks/eyes to the top of the birdhouse (one towards the front and one towards the back) then suspend the birdhouse from a branch of the tree with wire or narrow rope (wire being better if squirrels are in the picture). Two suspension lines to keep the birdhouse from twisting; shorter lines = less sway in winds.

Love the birdhouse Kirk! Isn't it so nice to have things in the garden to remind us of those that have passed? I love the green color, and it looks like it will fit in perfectly in your woodland garden!

What a wonderful gift to have your aunt's birdhouse from your brother! I would probably spray it with clear spray paint to help preserve it. I hope it lasts a very long time.
