I'm so sorry you had to experience that! Thankfully, I've never experienced that, but I've only been using a CPAP for a few years. Some of the other "long timers" may have stories, though.

I have had it happen. Power goes out often around here.
I usually just wake up. Remove the mask and wait for the
power to come back on. The bigger annoyance is the oxygen
concentrator beeping real loud when the power goes out.

HD uses his faithfully and has experienced the "power failure scare", just wish son would could say the same. Seems he takes it off of course to make the midnight run to the bathroom, returns to the bedroom half asleep and he just doesn't put it back on when going back to bed! His MD is going to be so upset with him when he checks the card!

Is this a life-support type of appliance? I don't think they are, but just in case--and for anyone else reading this thread who may have a necessary life-support appliance that runs on electricity....

You should contact your energy company, fill out the proper paperwork, get the necessary documentation from your dr--because then your home will be designated as a 'priority' and in the event of a widespread power outtage, the utility company will make every effort to get your home back online quickly. The utility company takes medical priorities VERY seriously--but you have to document your need, and they will review the situation from time to time, to make sure the appliance is still necessary and still being used.

Unfortunately my husband thinks it is to much of a bother. He sleeps without it most of the time.

One of the main reasons we don't sleep in the same room anymore.

Both DS (24YO) and I have one and we have lost power a number of times during winter storms. I have woke up in a panic tearing at the mask, not being able to breath. Then I just go back to sleep without it. I have it because I snore, very loud, but DS stops breathing. The problem is he takes his off about an hour after he puts it on. No way I can get him to keep it on.

I have done that also CR! I hadn't really thought about it too much..we don't lose it very often..but what about a battery backup like so many people use for the computers?? It would beep when the lights go out, so it would wake you up...without the 'lack of breathing, gasping for breath'! LOL

I just don't understand people that need them and just don't use them. I feel Soooooooo much better when I sleep with mine on. There are so many different types of masks out there...maybe they need to try a different style?? (I know it is mostly men that do this.....enough said!)

My doctor is gonna have a cow when he finds out I learned how to program my CPAP machine for any pressure I want. I bumped the pressure up a little to help with breathing.

For those that have trouble getting used to wearing the mask because of the high pressure settings, I advocate setting the pressure to a tolerable level and working up to the proper level over a week or so. After you get used to using it, you can't sleep without it.

Dh has a CPAP that has a battery adapter. It runs off a deep cell battery when the power is out. In our windy season he just keeps the battery charged and in a storage box by the bed. The CPAP will run off a battery for 2 days. You should ask if your machine has the adapter. Kathy

As mentioned an easy solution is a UPS (uninterruptible power supply). Shouldn't take that big a unit. And they're portable enough to bring with you when you travel for that matter.
