Sure I'd post it on facebook just to keep people up to date. If they don't know then you don't get support. I would have told my coworkers too. Heck I'd have every one praying, it never hurts. I hope you have a complete recovery and feel better than ever.

No. Surgery, dental work, going to the doctor pretty much stays in our family. I don't make a point of telling about it but we don't purposefully hide it either.

We don't do surgery "vigils" either.

My DS once had to have knee surgery after a motorcycle accident. He insisted I just drop him at the hospital entrance. He would call me when he came to to come pick him up. LOL.

DH has been home for almost 8 weeks for a foot surgery. Now we are dealing with little staph infection(caught early so doing well). A friend and I were on the phone the other night. I mentioned he was home. She had just run into him the day before and had no idea. So I guess that proves we don't talk about it much. LOL

Glad you are on the mend. Hope the swelling goes down quickly.

No, I don't usually unless I have to explain to family why I won't be around.

No - but I'm more of a private person. Of course I would tell my family and maybe my girlfriend of nearly 30 years if need be.

No, not really... but back in the mid 90's, when I had my eye operated on, only my kids and husband knew.

I do announce it on f/b because I have a lot of people to keep updated. My f/b settings are private, but I still don't say anything that would bother me if it got out. I always tell my friends and my work friends.

Speaking of privacy... I live in a very small town. One time I had to have a delicate out patient procedure. I woke up from anesthesia, but couldn't speak or open my eyes yet. The nurse in recovery was a friend of my SIL's. I heard this nurse call my SIL and tell her that I was there and what surgery I had done!

susan_on, did you report her? Does she still have her job??? Under HIPAA here in the US, people can be fired for blabbing.

Susan - I do hope you made a complaint to the Ontario College of Nurses. As a nurse, I can tell you that should never have happened. What happens in a hospital should stay in the hospital! I'd have been furious as I'm sure you were.

Yes, I would tell close family members because any surgery serious enough to require anesthesia could turn out to have complications. Close family and friends would be upset if they didn't have a clue about what was happening. I think it is a curtesy to clue them in.

My Dh had OP last week to repair a hernia. We told family members that we are in contact with on a regular basis, one close neighbor who we knew could be counted on for help if needed and DH's cardiac rehab group who would otherwise be calling the first day he was missing from class. (They are such a careing bunch of guys!)

So, yes, I think it is a curtesy to those you love and who love you.

I'm a very private person. I think OP surgery is boring to others. I've had a colonoscopy and never told anyone till it was over, and then to say how easy the procedure was, compared to the "clean-out" the day before. I didn't even tell anyone when I went to the hospital to deliver my 2 children. But after my first was born, I asked the delivery room nurse for a phone so I could call my mother. We hadn't even picked the baby's name yet!

No, I didn't report her even though she deserved it. My SIL would have been furious with me, and my in-laws would have too. This nurse was married to my lawyer, who was working on a political career (which he had some success with). This is a small town, and I just had the feeling that even though she would have been disciplined, too many people would have made me out to be the bad guy. I was much more passive then than I am now.

I did report nursing incompetence once though. My son was born in this same small hospital, and he was the only baby there. 25 hours later a baby girl was born- there were still no other babies. When I left the hospital, I went home and went to remove his baby bracelet and it had the other baby's name, physician, birth info etc. I thought I had the wrong baby! I called the hospital very upset and they wanted me to bring the bracelet in right away- which I didn't do, I still have it. Apparently, even though DS and I were the only patients for a day, the nurses were having a conflict over who should do the task of putting the bracelet on and some other stuff, so nobody did it until the next day when they screwed it up.

DS had to have his blood work redone, and so did the other baby. One nurse was disciplined. It did get back to me that some thought I was out of line for complaining, but I didn't care. As I told the administrators: "how do we know your staff hasn't mixed up babies before"? This was before DNA was done around here and if there hadn't only been two babies, one boy and one girl, it would have been a mess because I would wonder if I had the right baby!

Oh my Susan! How long ago was this? With only one baby to care for the nurses were in conflict over who would care for him? Sad. Like you said, thank goodness the two babies were of different sex; otherwise you could possibly always wonder!

He is 26 now, and that hospital was downgraded and is no longer a hospital. It was very, very stressful.. because I was so afraid to open the diaper to see if it WAS my boy...lol. DH said "that's the baby you've been feeding all week", and I said "what if I've been feeding the wrong baby all week"? It was like a TV movie, except that I really had my own baby, thank goodness.

Oh my, Susan! That story is one for the books! I'm glad to hear the place is no longer a hospital.

Don't they put the bracelet on the baby while still in the delivery room? I can see getting twins mixed up, presuming they are the same sex, but I don't see how they can give the wrong bay to a mother. Obviously, it has happened.

I don't announce anything personal on FB. I did talk about upcoming procedures on the forums here to try to get info from others ahead of time. In fact, I talk about it with friends in order to learn from them. I've had carpal tunnel release and cataracts in the last year. Talking about it in advance was informative and reassuring.

Dedtired, they do now, but they didn't then- at least not here. This was a very, very sloppy hospital. After that I was telling everybody to insist the bracelet was on before they left the delivery room.

I wouldn't post it on Facebook, but I would share with my family and good friends. I think it's nice to have people make a little fuss over you, and I like to do that in return for those I love.

Well, today I had a dental implant put in, I was on IV sedation, it worked out fine, so far I'm feeling good.
Besides telling all of you, now, I only told my family...

depends upon how serious the surgery is. I've had some
major things done, that I might not survive. And yes, I told! lol but outpatient? don't make a big deal out of it, but do tell my brothers that I had something done.
