I need a push from my decorating brain trust....

I thought I could do this without you guys but I can't! We've been in our house for a year now and I've decided that I love having this chair in my office but I don't want to live with the burgundy colored fabric any longer. I stopped at the upholstery shop and got so confused I left. The rest of my home is warm colors, golds, greens, reds, etc. I had this gray office furniture from DH's office in our previous house and it fits perfectly in this room. So now now I have gray furniture and light gold walls. (They are Sandy Lane, on the lighter end of the paint strip that has Tobacco Road.) I picked up the gold and blue-gray print for the wall hoping to tie them together. The colors seemed good and daisies are my favorite flower, but the picture is negotiable if you think it needs to go.

So what direction do I go with upholstery? This is just my office, not in a main area of the house. As you see I have my red and blue Jeff Gordon stuff on top of my desk...lol. But I'd like to have the chair "go" with the room and be able to clean it up to look good when I want to.

Below is a pic of the room and the wall with the pictures. Below that is a couple of pictures of my hearth room and living room so you can get a feel for my style (or lack of it..lol) I don't know whether to go different for the chair, something fun and crazy, or stick with the greens/golds or just what. Solid? Floral? Tweedy? Stripe?

I need suggestions if you have any ideas! Thanks :-)

There is a chair on Overstock that I would love to have, if I had the room. Unfortunately, I don't. It has received wonderful reviews. What I like best about it, other than its looks, is that it would be easy to move around to another room if you wanted. Price is definitely right, as is the shipping...see what you think.

Thanks David, I certainly do not want to re-do ducting. Our current 2.5 system already has an undersized return as those filters warp the negative pressure suction is so bad. Zippyhvac in this forum advised me earlier about increasing it here or using the 4" pleated filters. I've searched the energy audit report and don't have a specified "leak rate" just his comments and the few thermal images. I hear you on payback using SEER 15+, our area certainly would benefit. Since I've had RB installed, the rates are more under control but I'm still at $3400+ annual electric costs (the gas portion is nearly negligible, ~200ish/yr). It's that 4th tier rate of $.50 per KWh (yes 50 cents PER kwh) for the highest tier of usage. I can tell how much each workstation uses by using those Kill-a-Watt monitors, the panel system, and I have my own mini-meters on several individual circuits. I'll get quotes on 2.5t replacements and post here to get feedback and allow others to see the rates. I'm hoping it won't be much over $4000 for the lowest end SEER13 but spending a few extra $K for higher SEER is recaptured fairly fast with our usage. The decision is how much $$$ to invest in AC vs Solar to help with both conditioning and the other usage. AC + Solar in addition to needing a new roof (leaked *last* year), fencing, painting and all the appliances in the home are showing age. That 20 year mark sure did hit us hard in this home. We do have quite a large savings in place though since we haven't invested much into the home before this. With the economy the way it is we've been hesitant to pull the trigger on anything major. Cheri127, That article is eye opening. Everyone should read it! DH and I over think everything. Always looking for more information, a better deal, etc. Kitchen cabinets are an example. We have a store, with a great KD, offering us a good cabinet at a reasonable price. Yet, I found my self constantly looking for a better deal...searching craigslist, other stores. The difference was never more than a few hundred dollars. I was spending huge amounts of time. Finally in talking to DH, I stopped. Could I miss out on a great deal? Yea, maybe, but probably not. If it was not for the internet I would never have gotten in to that state of constantly looking. Clueless... You can't miss if you choose what you love.

I hear ya on the thinking about it until you head hurts! Your kitchen looks very warm and inviting...I like it a lot. But I do think changing out to some glass front cabinets would bring it up a notch...as would the open shelves, plate rack, etc you drew. I don't have a decortive hood...or one of those metal vent a hood things. What I have just looks like a thin black "line" along the bottom of the cabinets about the cooktop. To make it work, you just pull out the black trim and a piece of glass slide out and the fan turns on. The "guts" of the fan are actually up in the over head cabinets so you do loose some storage space - but not as much as replacing with a decorative hood and less expensive. Here is a pic, bear in mind that this is "before" pic but we are keeping the venting system. See the thin black trim above the cooktop? My current kitchen has similar colors as yours, but we do have quite a few glass front cabinets which I think makes a difference. I understand wanting to make what you have work, especially since you'll be adjusting financially for a time with your new house. I would not recommend purchasing furniture on credit. Instead, save for the pieces you want. Reserve debt increases for items that will protect or increase the value of your home if absolutely necessary. It's better to plan and save for those items as well. But, I digress. . . I think there are some things you can do to bridge the warm and cool tones in your room. Bringing some of the cooler tones onto the the sofa and bringing some warmer tones onto the wall are some things to consider. The mock-up below attempts to illustrate the idea I would recommend removing the console to the left of the window. It appears to crowding the entry. Maybe think about a couple of prints that have both warm and cool tones for above the long sofa wall. And perhaps a warm wooden shelf on the short wall. A distressed mirror above it along with a couple of well chosen photos or other items could make a nice vignette. Rather than the current side table, consider a solid, drum or pedestal. Suspending a pendent light in the right position above it would balance out the short sofa wall. I hope this has been somewhat helpful. Congratulations on your new house!

here's one more on Overstock, similar in style, but darker paisley. If it seems like I'm "hawking" Overstock, I'm really not. I've ordered quite a bit online since Katrina, and have been pretty pleased and lucky with my online purchases.

Oh, that's an easy one! I would go--in a heartbeat--with the colors in your daisy painting. It looks like a slightly periwinkle blue? Bring the daisies with you to the uphostery shop, and look for a shade of blue that works with/picks up on the blue in the print. It might also include some yellow, maybe some white, maybe some gray. The print is so lively and fun! Upholstering the chair to work with the print will enliven the whole room. And it will make your Jeff Gordon stuff happy!

wodka - Those are some gorgeous chairs on overstock and some amazing prices. I've marked the page for ideas for a bedroom chair. But the one in my office is where DH comes in to talk with me, ends up reclined back, and falls asleep. Or sometimes I curl up there with a book. I think the style you linked would LOOK great, but I don't think DH would settle in there for very long.

teacats - I've been browsing that fabric site. That one you linked reminds me of the fabric on the chairs in front of my fireplace and that might work, especially if I go subtle with the golds, reds, grays.

lynnski - I do love my daisy pic. I was kind of wondering if you guys would think the gold and blue/gray mix would work ok. At least if I go that way it's a little different from the rest of my house and that's a good thing. Great idea to take the pic to the shop with me, then I could bring the fabric choices home, too.

Thanks for the responses. Now that I've made this post I'm even more anxious to get rid of that burgundy color, it clashes so badly with the floor.
