Decisions about Exterior - Duron Signature life vs. Ben. Moore
Comments (6)There are dealers for California Paints as well as Pratt and Lambert in the D.C. and Maryland market. I have experience with Pratt and Lambert paints and it has a solid reputation. California Paints is supposed to be a great product and I have talked to people who absolutely love it. They use Accolade in leiu of California. The 2010 is California's latest product and is better than Fresh Coat but is downrated because of the price. I don't have any experience with Kelly Moore paint. It is a small regional paint company. I have heard several paint contractors rave about MAB paints(M.A. Bruder paints) which is also available in your market. Their premium product is Seashore, which was developed for the Jersey Lighthouses. The mildew has little to do with the preparation or paint. Exterior paint has some mildewcide in it and will resist damage from the mildew. I must caution you about using a mildewcide additive in any paint. It automatically voids the warranty on the paint. If the paint store offers you an additive on your paint, tell them no. The problem is that the paint manufacturer has no control over the additives and will claim a paint failure on the additive. Mildew can be cleaned off with some bleach and water and can be sprayed or sponged on the surface and rinsed off. I highly recommend staying away from a flat finish, use at least an eggshell or satin finish. The sheen helps to keep mildew from affecting the paint....See MoreBenjamin Moore Aura paint
Comments (68)I've been using Aura since it came out. I am not a professional painter but repaint my rooms frequently. I do love Aura in any room but bathrooms. I have used it in 2 different houses, and painted in 4 different bathrooms in 2007, 2008, 2012. Each of the bathrooms has proper ventilation and the exhaust fan is always used when showering. All of the walls were properly cleaned before painting. In every bathroom where it was used, the paint has streaks. Some of these can be "washed" off but re-appear soon again. Do a search on Aura paints and you will see this is a wide-spread problem in bathroom use. I will continue to use it in other rooms but no more bathrooms!...See MoreWhy Benjamin Moore???
Comments (35)Sherwin Williams 40% off sale is this weekend. The only color HD didn't match well in Behr of the BM and SW colors is a complicated Plum Brown. I'm taking the $26 loss on the can of Behr, and going to SW to get this color during the sale. I was amazed at how well they did match the other BM colors from BM's classic line. I found I really do like the Behr paint. I'm normally a SW or BM person, leaning more towards BM when money allows. The Behr was very thick, which is a real help for an amateur. Last time I used SW on a wall, I got a LOT of off spray from the roller - tiny dots of paint all over the baseboard. I had no idea this had happened till I got right up on it later. I know - I should have protected it better. But, this time, after rolling out the Behr and realizing the tape had come off, I inspected and there were absolutely NO dots of splatter to be found anywhere. I found the same to be true of BM's Aura line. I used it in flat for my kitchen. 4 years later, it's still gorgeous, and when I have to scrub - NO color can be seen on the rag after scrubbing. When I have to repaint the kitchen I will absolutely use it again. I probably should have used it for the bathrooms too -- but money would not allow this go round....See MoreQuestion about SW Tester Quarts (paint tinting Q)
Comments (11)marti--this was my first time in that particular SW store. I go to one closer to my house that seems to deal more "to the trade" and they don't have the tester qts. Not sure why my spending habits are important here? Usually, I can pick the color I want right off the tiniest chip--I've never bought samples before, but I'm having a tough time finding *any* color I like for my entry/hall/stairs/upstairs hall. The chips look completely different on every wall. I bought 2 small BM testers as well, but their selection is severely limited in the color I'm looking for--a light/medium toned slightly bluish grey. equst--Thanks for the info--I will take my Behr chip in with me. I've been dancing around that issue by finding all the BM and SW chips that are "close" to the Behr, and it's just not working. I'm thinking if I tinted the color sample I have darker, I still won't like it.....See MoreBunny
