GE Cafe Gas Range?

Anyone have one? I really like this range - it's exactly what I want. What's holding me back is that I have read some reviews about the cooling fan being very loud. There are also reviews that say that the fan is fine. I haven't been able to find a showroom that has one "live" and I am really torn. I've perused the Appliance forum, but thought I'd check here as well. If only I had the budget for a Wolf...

My son has a GE high end range, and I just got 2 for the church, and they are not noisy. Yes when it's in convection mode, you can hear the fan, but it's not offensive.
But the stoves I am talking about are 4 inch ranges...you are looking at a 30 inch...is that what you want?

Thanks Linda. My kitchen will only allow for a 30", so yes, that's what I'm looking at. Where do you get the teeny tiny pots and pans for a 4" range? LOL.
I was looking forward to shopping for a new range - the one we've had for the last 10 years is an absolute lemon - but I'm finding the whole process stressful, as there are so many conflicting opinions out there and I am amazed at the lack of knowledge of the sales vultures in the large appliance showrooms.

Westtoeast, I posted earlier in this thread months ago when I was considering this range for myself. I have now owned and been using the GE Cafe range since late May. I have been very pleased with it. I have not had any problems with the burners going out on the simmer setting, nor have my knobs gotten hot while the oven is in use. There were complaints when the range first came out about knobs melting, but the knobs were replaced on newer models. I've fortunately not experienced this problem with mine. I have yet to use the lower oven so I can't attest to how that works. I will probably be testing it out at Thanksgiving - on second thought, I'll probably give it a test run before! I have used the griddle quite a bit and love having that feature. I've only used it for things like pancakes, french toast and grilled cheese. The only real complaint I have about the range is that the burners on the front both have higher BTUs. You can't simmer on either of them. I had a large pot of chili on the front burner and had it on the lowest setting and it still was boiling. I wish they had swapped out the burners so that they had one of the powerboil burners on back and simmer on front. When I'm making a pasta dish, I like to boil pasta on the back burner out of the way while preparing sauce on one of the front burners. Makes it less crowded. Plus, if I'm making something that needs to simmer, yet needs constant attention, like making a roux for homemade mac and cheese, I have to be very careful. The front burner is almost too hot at the lowest setting but the back burner is inconvenient - reaching to the back to regularly stir/whisk is a pain. That said, I would still buy this range if I were to make the decision again, but it would be nice if GE redesigned the burners. Very easy to keep clean and maintain and looks appealing. All in all, I've been very happy with this range so far.

Are the back two burners limiting at all? I am concerned they are just for simmering, then again I don't know how to translate BTU# to what that means functionally in terms of what you can cook. Ideally all the burners would have a large range, but I am limited by the fact that I really don't need a prostyle range and want some conveniences of non-pro. Thanks in advance!

The all gas Woff pumped out hot steam at the rear vent which covered the backsplash with lots of water vapor When you burn gas, the result is CO2 and H20 ... and heat. All gas ovens will vent steam when the flame is on.

weissman & francoise47, I appreciate both of your opinions with I value. I have not seen the backguard in person. I will wait to get more opinions and then make my decision but I am not sure what I will be doing with the backsplash yet so maybe I should wait. If I don't do a backsplash until next spring, would it be OK to only have the stove against the drywall in my kitchen that is painted with no backguard or tile backsplash if I paint behind the stove in a semi-gloss?

Wow Jane - you just summed up my entire day. I spent the last 8 hours running from one appliance store to another shopping for a new fridge and it is the most frustrating experience!

Anyway, I do not have the GE Cafe but a friend of mine does. She hasn't mentioned the fan, but she did comment on the discoloration of the stove top after only a few months. I guess she scrubs it with stainless cleaner regularly, but it still has a yellowish cast to it. That is what steered me away from the cafe model, even though it is BEAUTIFUL in the showroom. I ended up with the GE Profile (black top) and am really happy with it.

Hi,
Just a thought, you've perused the Appliance Forum, but have you posted this topic specifically? There are people there who work for repair shops and salesrooms, you might get additional feedback on that forum. Certainly don't take lack of postings as the final answer. But I'd say that Alexa's feedback is clearly a good start. I'd also check at eopinions and do a Google search for GE CAFE RANGE REVIEWS and see what comes up.

Lots of good advice here. Alexa, that is the first time I have heard of a discolouration problem. I will definitely look into that further.
Compumom, thanks for the link, there are certainly a lot of different opinions out there. Each time that I decide to just bite the bullet and order it, I hear something that makes me hesitate. I am definitely suffering from analysis paralysis on this one.
I had hoped to be cooking our Thanksgiving dinner on my new range, but at this rate, I will be lucky to have it by Christmas!
