Got my battery powered fans, flashlight by bedside, and battery travel clock by beside.

Warm 66 at 10 pm and very windy!

Tornado season is here.

Jay, What new planting mix are you using? I want to hear about it! This year I'll be planting deep too since my soil moisture levels down deep are good, but soil moisture levels higher up are not good. I'll have to water deeply to make it work and with clay that's not always easy. That's terrible news about the fire near Santanta, KS. I hope everyone evacuates safely and that the firefighters can do their job in a safe and effective manner. With the winds today, I've felt like it was a matter of time before someone had a big fire somewhere. The sky here looks disgusting. For a while, it was a sort of a red dusty look like you get with dust storms blowing in from west Texas. Then, a couple of hours ago it started looking more like grayish-white fog or smoke from somewhere. Now it is yellow and a heavy layer of pollen is settling on the vehicles. We're going to have a whole rainbow of colors in the sky tonight and tomorrow. At least most of us here on this forum will not be endangered by the severe weather expected tonight and tomorrow. Dr. Forbes on The Weather Channel seems deeply concerned about the potential for very severe weather from all this mess, but it should start north and east of most of us. This morning, they interviewed a Storm Chaser guy in Sherman, TX, and asked where he and his bunch were headed today and he said Coffeyville, KS. He said once they got there, they'd check the latest weather data and head for wherever they thought the action would be. Around here, when we have the potential for severe weather that includes tornadoes, I just watch for the storm chaser vehicles. When those vehicles are driving up my road, that's when I head for the fraidy hole. Last year, Chris was out storm spotting with other firefighters and law enforcement officers and they ran into some storm chasers about a quarter-mile to a half-mile from our house. I heard them mention that on the radio and I headed for the cellar. About fifteen minutes later, the tornado touched down at the Red River near us and hop-scotched its way across the county, but didn't do any real damage. I don't really have to watch the local weather radar---I just watch for the storm chasers and that's all the warning I need. Dawn

I'm glad you checked in, I was wondering how everyone in California was faring. The winds were supposed to hit Colorado too, 137 MPH I think, so I was wondering about Lee too. Apparently it's also supposed to hit Oklahoma, Misouri, maybe as far as Indiana. I was starting to think that maybe you were all going to be blown all the way to Michigan! Gina, I know what you mean about not sleeping when the wind reaches a certain point, about 60 MPH, I always wonder if the pine trees just a couple of feet from my garage are going to come down and I hear the garbage cans getting blown down the street. Since we have no streetlights (they got turned off last year when the city ran out of operating cash for them) I can't see a darned thing, I always wonder if they are MY garbage cans. Not that I could do anything if they were, I guess... I'm glad everyone is safe, anyway, I've seen posts from Lars, Jessica, Eileen, Clare. Anyone hear from Ann (spacific) or Ellen (compumom)? Diana? Lee in Colorado and KatieC in Idaho got those winds too, and I sure hope David escapes, he's had a couple of very damaging storms, he deserves a pass on this one. Boy, with these winds, that October snowstorm on the East Coast, the 50 car pileup by Nashville from the freezing fog (what the heck IS that anyway?), it's been wild. Stay safe everyone. Annie

Moni, Congrats on the new house. So, if it hasn't rained any more since that one day, I'm guessing you are somewhere near Sharon and Lisa ('cause they aren't getting rain either). Ouch! Hope the foot heals quickly and I hope you're current on your tetanus shot. My son stepped on a nail recently and couldn't remember how along ago he last had a tetnus shot, so he headed to the clinic in town to get one. At the rate things are going, it may be a while before you get to dig out any of that devil's grass. We have a good shot at rain next week. I hope y'all do too. I cannot imagine you not being able to go out and ride your bike. I hope your life gets back to normal soon, and I hope you're not climbing the walls with boredom. Dawn

Thanks, PK. It was quite scary. We could hear stuff cracking around us, the lights blinking, water leaking through the patio door due to lateral rain. It was that bad for a short time, though, but it was scary. Tonight is 11 below, windy and very dangerous to be out. Yep, would rather have this instead of tornados.. May get up to 20 above sometime next week then will drop again. Stay safe and be careful.

I am about an hour west of Glenda. The weather channel sent Jim Cantore to Memphis early in the day to see all the bad weather from there. Our local weather people got all excited too. We were in a "watch" area most of the afternoon, and after 9:30 the tornado sirens did go off. I went into my closet with my radio, flashlight, my cell phone and a house phone and my purse. Cat came in and waited with me. Fortunately, we did not have to wait long for the all clear. Lots of rain and wind but no tornado.

Hope all the people east of us are o.k. and did not have a lot of damage.

Glenda, we experienced your weather a few hours after you did.
We had lots of thunder with ours and got the much needed rain.
That wind was really whistling making it kinda scary.

Heard the rain, then the roar, headed for the basement, lost power, and just huddled down there for awhile... After it got quiet again, came back upstairs again to see emergency vehicles all over the place up and down the road. One came into our drive to see that I was okay.. bless his heart, he was the local VFD fire chief that Bob trained some years back.... This morning I can hear chain saws and see over on the north east ridge where trees are twisted together like spaghetti strands but standing. As far as I can tell, all is well here at our place.... a few branches down here and there is all. We were extremely blessed...

The power company is phenominal... we were only out of power for about 6 hours before they got it back up and running... pretty darned good for a rural area like this.
