Do we need an architect??? Please help

after interviewing several contractors, we had an architect friend look at our now demolished, hopefully soon to be renovated kitchen. In about ten minutes, he identified several possible problem areas that NOT ONE of the contractors had mentioned. We were not going to hire an architect as we are staying almost completely within the old design, but now I'm thinking it would be a great investment. Rumor has it the contractors don't tell you about potential issues so that if they come up, they're already working on your kitchen and so you have to pay them whatever extra money it takes to make everything work.
