Parquet Flooring - What should I do?
Comments (3)You should never bleach any floor unless you are prepared to never have it be a natural color ever again. This floor looks and chances are its a red oak species. Red oak is EXTREMELY easy to stain any color. Bleaching just seems like an unnecessary option. If it was my floor i would sand and stain a medium brown color. That color is just a color i like. You can go whatever color you choose. Keep in mind the darker you stain the more difficult it is to keep looking nice. (Dust will show up virtually right after cleaning) Other than that nice find!!...See MoreWhat is this desk? Should I paint or refinish?
Comments (12)Thank you all for responding! I emailed a professional and he gave me some history on it. Very interesting. He said it is definitely from 1900-1920's. It is a Spinet desk and more decorative than most. There used to be a lid which is now missing. =( My dad said he let my uncle borrow the desk and upon it's return the lid was gone. He is still mad about it. Now that I am researching them, it appears that was one of major appeals to the desk. The history of these desks is that in the late 1800's Spinet used to make pianos and when the piano stopped working, people converted these into desks. So during the depression era the appeal was strong and desks were made. I do not think I am going to paint it now since I have learned the history. The professional I spoke with told me it will be a big task refinishing this desk. He gave me tips on how to do it myself. I am a bit concerned but I think I may give it a try. I do not have the funds to hire a professional since the cost of this restore would run between 400-1200 dollars! He told me fully restored the desk is valued around 450. As is, 50 - 100 dollars. After so many years it is cool to find out the history of this piece....See MoreWhat color should I refinish my floors?
Comments (3)If your wood floors extend beyond the kitchen, you should use the same color as throughout the adjacent areas. Otherwise, you should pick a color you like. Something that will contrast with the mahogany furiture, so probably lighter rather than darker. Avoid gray....See MoreHelp refinishing parquet
Comments (12)someimtes the parquet has small wire embedded, used as a spline to hold the 5 pieces together. Although, in a newer home w/Armstrong flooring, I wouldn't imagine these were made old school. there should be glue to hold the '5 finger' pieces together. Are you sure it's solid wood? If it's engineered, it may not be suitable for refinishing. any way you can take up one piece hidden in a closet or corner somewhere? here's a video on how it's supposed to be sanded https://artofclean.co.uk/can-5-finger-parquet-floors-be-sanded-and-restored-cambridge/ https://www.woodfloorbusiness.com/sanding-finishing/step-by-step-sanding-amp-finishing-parquet-wood-flooring.html...See MoreUser
