Will depend on:
1. Type of cabinets? Stock sizes or custom available?
2. Type of range. What is the manufacturer's recommended distance between the wood hood and range?

With a ceiling of 90" high....I would want to go with 87" high talls and 33" high uppers. You can do this with either a really good semi-custom line or a custom line or a local cabinet-maker

Here is a kitchen that I did for a client that we just finished up. Their hood is 30" high....too high for your kitchen. But your's could be made shorter. You probably wouldn't be able to do a pro style range...since they require more clearance.

My ceilings are 91.5" tall. Not very much taller than yours. My custom guy said he could build one for me. Wait, are these custom or stock cabs you're talking about? Even if you can't do a wood hood, you don't have to do a little tiny hood with cabinet over it. You could make the hood area more of a statement by putting in either a slim-line modern looking hood with a duct cover running to the ceiling or a more pro-looking hood with a full-width duct cover to the ceiling. Neither of these need cab above. I like this look much better.

From my understanding, a wood hood is not the cheapest option. The two options I mentioned would probably be in the same price range.

Have you seen the Finished Kitchen Blog (FKB)? You can have the kitchens run in a slideshow fashion and check out some cool looking hoods there. Plus then you'll see cool countertops, fabulous hardware, stunning tile, etc..... ;)

This doesn't make sense. Perhaps it's a particular style of wood hood that he can't make because of the proportions? Was it a pre-fab you were looking for? Because a cabinetmaker or carpenter should be able to make you something that will match in and fit over your insert in the space given if you're willing to be flexible on style for what will fit.

That is why I love this blog. I think with a little ingenuity it can be done. These are custom cabinet guys. My venting pipes through the upper cabinets and exits outside right over the sink. 5' of pipes run through my cabs. I cannot change it. ( I am used to it) The cabinets will definitely go to the ceiling.I am hoping to purchase a 30" Electrolux induction range. The cabinet makers I am looking at are ultracraft, shiloh, and dura supreme.

For what it's worth, a metal hood is a heck of a lot more traditional than a wood one. :)

Hang in there and get your wood hood. It's gotta be doable. A hood's a hood!

Question for kompy (hope you see this) - On that picture you provided, how wide is that fluted panel on the island at the bottom of the picture? Is it 10" wide, or ???

My own kitchen is the same height as yours and we have a wood hood similar to the one pictured below, which we just installed and it is about 6" taller than yours.
Code is usually 30" off the cooktop. Maybe they don't offer a hood that works with your measurements, but it is certainly do-able. We make all our hoods custom, so never an issue.
I would re-visit this with your cabinet guys and get more specific reasons as to why you "can't" have a wood hood.

Is it a gas range? Depending on the range specs, any combustibles must be at least 30" above the cooking surface - sometimes 36". Depending on your specs, that would leave the total hood height of 21" - 27" (leaving room for crown). It can definitely be done. I design hoods based around specific blowers all the time and there are plenty of blowers available that would fit in that height. It is not difficult to do. Often, I just provide panels/moldings/valances and the contractors build the hoods themselves. Check the range specs. Make sure they are adhered to. Building inspectors in my area will fail homeowners if clearances are not met. Good luck.

I took the picture with my camera....the kitchen in person is much more breath-taking than the pictures show.

I am selling more and more walnut with P&F the last year or so....once I realized it had the same surcharge as cherry...so why not get something different.

Ok I found out that the beam running across my kitchen holding up my sons bedroom is impeding my wood hood. The venting pipe runs through the cab 5' over the sink under the beam and outside. Not much chance in "correcting" it soooo

Any good 6' stainless steel vents out there?
