Recommendations for trim & door paint & stain

We are painting and staining everything ourselves in the house that we are building. We just finished with the ceilings and walls - yay! Now the trim carpenter is supposed to be finished on Thursday and we have the daunting task ahead of us of painting the trim, windows and some of the doors. 10 of the doors will be painted and 13 of them are cherry which we want to apply a very light stain. We are leaning towards using BM Satin Impervo on the trim. Will that also work well for the doors? Does anyone have recommendations on staining the doors (and stair rails, mantel, etc..)? I'd like to use a water based since we don't have time to wait for oil to dry. I love how much easier it is to apply oil but it always takes too long to dry (at least the way I apply it) plus I don't want to worry about oil rags around the house or cleaning up with mineral spirits. My experience with water based has not been good though. It usually dries too fast and I can't keep up with it. I am assuming there is something I could add to it to slow down the drying time. Any recommendations on products or brands? Thanks.

I am a steadfast fan of Cabinet Coat for trim, doors and cabinets since I discovered it a few years back. I won't use anything else. The white is bright, clean, and 'true' so it goes with virtually all paint colors. It's self-leveling, dries to a nice subtle sheen, doesn't nick as readily as latex, and fingerprints, etc. wipe right off with a damp cloth. First used it on rental property cabinets, which tend to get higher than average wear, and it's held up like a workhorse.

People are probably getting sick of seeing it, but here's a new door/trim I did in CC (that's an eggshell paint on the wall, so you can see it has some sheen but not glaring):

Can Cabinet Coat be tinted? Is it available in different sheens? Does anyone have any recommendations on stains? Thanks.

Good point, Annie, but now I have a question about your answer: No, we don't necessarily want to call attention to the doors, because we didn't think having them made and stained to match the cabinetry would call attention to them, since they would be along the same wall as the rest of the cabinetry...just sort of carrying on that stained cherry look...unless you are referring specifically to having attention called to them because of their opaque glass inserts. FYI, we are not considering stained doors without the glass inserts; they will be either stained with glass inserts or painted without the glass. Elaborate as you wish, and thanks.

I'm going thru this dilemna right now, in a big way....so I'm very interested in the responses and photos We are painting our oak cabinets BM Timid White, floors are oak, all windows, trims and interiors doors in the entire house are solid wood (stained a color called Puritan Pine, a close match to the floors), walls in kitchen are now painted the new color of BM Wilmington Tan, going from laminate to black granite............the kitchen has two beautiful solid wood/glass paned french doors leading to the living room.... The old window/floor trim just doesn't pop against the new paint color, kitchen is visible from living room so I don't want two different trim finishes,,,or do I, or would it be OK if I just painted the trims in the kitchen and left the rest of the house stained trim? Do interior wood doors really look good with painted trims, so I could paint the trims and leave the beautiful wood doors alone?? My issue is that if I paint the trims in the kitchen to match the cabinets and new updated look that I will need to paint trim around the French Doors...do I paint the doors, the trim in the next room, the entire house...all doors/windows/trim.... I have been stressed about all of the other issues regarding renos but as you can tell this one is making me crazy........

I used to be very narrow minded. I had this foolish belief you could not mix wood and white trim. Then I grew up to realize the beautiful possibilities. I have also come to truly embrace wood for it's purity, classic lines, earthy feel adding to a rich elegant home. Go for it. I can not remember which TV show I was wacthing, Modern Family or maybe it was Desparate Housewives, no wait... I think it was a movie from Netflicks. The kitchen was exactly as you describe. What color are the rest of the doors? What color are the walls? Are you going with a dark stain, natural? Lots of factors. I don't think it's inherently wrong to paint the door and have wood trim. Why do you want to match the wall color though? Are you trying to make the door disappear? If so, it won't with the wood trim. It would help to have a better understanding of what your purpose is... Congrats on the new house! If you have any pictures yet, it's always helpful :)

Some dealers will custom tint (outside the color chart), some won't. There is a color chart below for colors dealers will do. Only one sheen, but it's a very nice satin. Not glossy, much like a hand buffed eggshell, dries smooth and hard. As far as stain products, I like Zar, Varathane and Minwax, in that order. Zar just seems to be richer than the others. And although you seem in a hurry, if it were me, I'd use oil-based. But that's just my .02. You might want to check in the woodworking forum here for stain recommendations.
