a cautionary tale - lettuce be careful.....

Last night I had my sister and her family for dinner to celebrate my neice's 15th birthday. I bought "triple washed, ready to eat" baby greens in a tub from the grocery for salad. I ordinarily re-wash them, but last night was hectic and I skipped doing my own wash, after all, they are "triple washed and ready to eat."

With the first forkful, my neice got a little green worm - still wiggling! Sorta put everyone off the salad.

From now own, I will be washing salad greens regardless of what the package says!

It means it's both very fresh and pesticide free! Bet he didn't eat much... ;)

Not to argue (but) I would suggest in the southeast with your 'natural' humidity, fire is less a danger. We have the same conditions that you describe above and with humidity in the teens and twenties, these are extreme fire conditions in low humidity and winds. I posted about the fire that almost took our mountain community last year. I don't envy you your bugs in the SE, but the humidity does serve you well in some ways! Point being, we are talking about a cautionary tale. Know your area, your climate, etc. and judge your fire danger accordingly.

Joann never knew her father, & her mother is an abuser with wild mood swings & a malevolent disposition. She's the reason Joann has an unlisted phone number & a post office box for her mail. Joann told me that she & her husband Bill were on their way to the grocery store one cold morning when they hit a patch of black ice & the car spun out of control & nearly went off a bridge into an icy creek. She said that her mind was flooded with the horrified realization that, if she & Bill died together, her mother was her next of kin. The disposal of her home & her car & the fate of her beloved animals would be at the whim of a terrible person who might call the pound if she were in a good mood but who might kill the animals herself if she were in a bad mood. or maybe just for the fun of it. & she'd *never* give a dime or either of the pets to Joann's sister. When the car came to a stop & she realized that they were okay, she turned to her husband & said, "Forget the grocery store. We're going to the lawyer's office & make our wills." and they did. Something that dawned on me later was that, had Bill died in an accident that resulted in Joann's permanent disability & loss of her ability to make decisions or express desires, Joann could have been given to her mother's custody or guardianship.

Sorry to hear about your calamity!!!(Welcome to My World!lol!) I just told DH, after getting back from Mexico, that I'll slow down on the spending, just spent almost $100 at the tile store!! BAD JANE!!! But I HAD to have this new color grout called Slate, it's got a blue/charcoal tinge to it, and of course they only sell outdoor grout in 25lb bags! What's a girl to do??? Today I'll grout my new BB and the Shower door window with it!! Ya! A grouting day!

When I was a kid, my aunt made a batch of cookies for the parish priest. Later, he told her how much he loved those "delicious lemon cookies. " "Lemon? " my aunt thought. There wasn't any lemon in the recipe. She went home and dug out the card to double check. No lemon. Then she went through all the ingredients she had used, trying to figure out where the flavor had come from. The wrong extract? Nope, that wasn't it. Had something gone sour? No. Finally, the only thing left was the oil, which this particular recipe used instead of butter or shortening. She went under the cupboard to get the bottle. Apparently, she had never felt comfortable handling big jugs of oil, which were glass back then, so she usually transferred some to a plastic squeeze bottle, typically an empty dishwashing detergent container. This time, there were two squeeze bottles in the cabinet. One said, "Lemon Joy." She never told the priest. But we always wondered what is next bathroom visit was like.

I, too, find live bugs in my food to be extremely encouraging :-)

Guess what I'm having for lunch? Salad!! However, I will wash the lettuce first. Live bugs/worms may be encouraging (and I'll have to admit, I never looked at it that way before, but I can see the truth of it now) but I really don't want to encounter one.

A woman here in Iceland bought a bag of imported salad greens and when she served the salad they found a tiny, live frog in the salad. Wonder how many you'd need for a frog stew?

I don't get a great deal of comfort knowing that bugs and animals are surviving in my food. Would you get comfort knowing a rattlesnake travelled to your farm in a bale of hay. And what about that poor woman that got bit by a tarantula while purchasing a banana! And what's with that worm in the tequila! Dead or alive -- I don't want to know it's there.
netla: I don't know how far that frog traveled in that bag of greens, but it must have found enough "food" in the bag to survive the trip. Don't frogs eat lots of bugs and each other?

Hope your neice wasn't a vegetarian. :)

I probably hate bugs and worms more than anyone, but I'd rather pick out the occasiona organic critter than eat pesticides or have everything go "round-up ready GMO".
They outnumber us a million-fold, so chances are we'll all find one sooner or later.

I found a little green squiggly critter in my Gai Lan the other day. Figured he'd made it through harvest, travel and being bagged and shelved at the little Asian market where I bought his dinner for mine so I recklessly released her/him (it was hard to tell) into my beets in my garden. How could I squash such a survivor?

I'm not bothered by finding the occasional eensy weensy squiggly thing in my veggies. Likely they were born there, and have eaten nothing but, so they are simply nature-processed...how much factory-processed food do we eat that is likely far dirtier and has a far greater likelihood of inimical contamination?

On the other hand, plump, well grown tomato hornworms give me the heebie-jeebies and I simply cannot make myself pluck them off the plant with my hand...I needs must get a pair of gloves or snip the stem off, gross critter intact, whereupon I put it out in the feeding tray for one of our resident Blue Jays to discover and devour.

Go figure.

LOL, Rachel, I won't tolerate the hornworms either. They're hard to find and I pay the kids 2 cents for every potato beetle they'll pick off the plants for me, but they get 25 cents for a tomato worm.

Unlike you, I relentlessly squash them.
