gritty canned vegetables?

Is it my imagination or have the canning places stopped washing their veggies as well before canning? I've had trouble lately with canned beans, and my mom served some canned spinach that was really inedible. I made chili the other day and put in fresh tomatoes, ground beef, and opened three canned beans-black, kidney and chili beans. My chili turned out gritty! YUCK!!!

OH gross, there's nothing worse than dirt in your food! How disgusting! I haven't noticed that...thankfully!

Is it any one brand that you've seen this or more than one?

Ten days ago I read something on CNN about recalled frozen vegetables because they contained ground glass. Nothing about canned and I hope that's not the case with your canned vegetables. You might want to open an cans remaining and contact the company with the product code. They won't recall them unless someone reports a problem.

My impression when I started growing succulents is that everybody who's been doing it for awhile has a different "recipe." After looking at about a dozen of said recipes, I came to the conclusion that everybody seems to use a volcanic glass for drainage, some organic matter to retain water, and sand or fine gravel for the delicate roots, even if the exact ingredients and ratios differ. I thus used a mixture very similar to yours (with copra instead of bark). I used a ratio of 1:1 copra/perlite on the bottom two thirds, and 1:1:1 copra/perlite/sand on the top third. I'd probably use less sand in the future, but my little cactilings seem to be doing very well so far.

I used to use it but now we live on 1.5 acres and everything is in ground. @cactusmcharris - I agree, I fell in love the moment I got it! I had to order it from California (General Pumice Products, love them!) @breathnez In my arsenal I have: 3/16" pumice, Gran-I-Grit Grower, Reptibark, sifted through a 1/4 inch screen, Turface Pro League, Lambert perlite (great size, no powder), and sifted river rock from my property, various sizes from gritty sand to small stones, sorted. Depending on the plant is what combination I go with. (For example, Lithops get straight pumice, others get grit, pumice, turface, just depends plus I experiment a lot) Today I was planning on going back to Al's recipe for my new haws since didn't want them to be a science experiment! I originally stopped using bark in my gritty mix since A: its expensive B: It's a pain to sort, and C: I found myself not wanting to use it all up too quickly because of the aforementioned reasons (it's kinda like having fine China but never wanting to eat off of it) I figured the haws deserved it. So this afternoon I "accidentally" mixed together bark, pumice, and turface then realized I meant to use grit (and not the pumice) so I came here to ask about it (and you guys are really awesome, thank you!). @Rina I will post a pic of my mix tomorrow since its dark :) (Nice to "meet" you, I've learned so much from you and your posts!) In the meantime, here's everything new I got! (Dupes will go towards a giveaway) I don't need 10 split rocks - or do I? ha! Mostly for a review/tutorial/DIY blog post and a 6" baby toes (both my Frithia Pulchra and Fenestraria are so tiny in comparison!) OH, and a boat load of new TC pots from dollar tree.

Can I reuse gritty mix after planting possible diseased plant in it?

If you know for certain it was root rot, you could re-use it. If there is any chance there was some sort of pathogen, I wouldn't. Perhaps get a cheap plant and put it in the GM and see if it develops the same condition, if not, give reusing it a go.

Several years ago, I use to buy canned veggies from Aldis and had to stop buying the peas because they were always gritty. Don't buy anything there anymore because the closest Aldi's is too far away.

Doesn't anyone rinse their beans? I always do. Never, ever use canned spinach. Fresh tastes much better!

I try and use dry beans but sometimes a can makes everything so much simpler, however I always rinse the canning sludge off my beans for soup or chili.

I do get grit in tinned or jarred clams sometimes but that goes with the territory.

I think we all would be both surprised and put off by what all is in the processed things we consume. I recently had a tour of a certified organic sprout facility, salad sprouts, and it will be some time before I consume anything like that that I haven't made.

metaxa, I agree, I've always talked about the "extra" things in our commercially prepared food.

I live 15 miles from the Gerber baby food plant and have friends that work there. That's when I found out about "particulate matter", or that's what it was called 10 or 15 years ago, probably something else now. That means anything besides the actual food, LOL.

The government allows a certain percentage of items in canned food, even babyfood. That's sticks, grass, bugs, rodent droppings, fingernail clippings, whatever. It's all in there, somewhere. That's without talking about pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, all the other "cides", and preservatives or whatever else is in there.

So I have a garden and I can my own vegetables, for the most part. I usually use dried beans because of the sodium content in canned ones, but sometimes it's just too convenient to dump a can of garbanzos into the food processor for hummus. So, I rinse them instead and try to convince myself I'm getting rid of some of the other "stuff", LOL.

The real problems I have with other canned vegetables is tht they add sugar to some of them, and when I open a can I get about half a can of vegetables and half a can of liquid. They didn't make the cans smaller, they just put less in them!
