Donna, when I was a kid my mom would steep milk with a bit of sugar, cinnamon, & nutmeg until just warm. Then, she poured a bit not much over a bowl of rice and topped with a pat of butter. I come from German/Russian background. Might ask DH if that sounds familar?

My husband is immigrant Welsh. With my background, trying to prepare things he remembers...well, let's just say we've had some interesting dinners. :)

When I was a kid, my best friend ate rice for breakfast like you'd eat oatmeal. All I remember is milk and sugar in it. I bet it's a southern/soul food type dish. You can probably find some information/recipe on google.

This sounds like what they made. I do now remember putting butter in it. It was plain old white rice they used.

Pennsylvania Dutch great gramma...hot milk, over cooked rice, sugar a pat of butter, some nutmeg and sometimes cinnamon....sweet rice!
She also did it with noodles.

Whenever my Mom made rice for supper,
She purposely made extra.
So there would be leftovers for dessert another day.

We just put a bit of milk or cream over it,
A light sprinkle of sugar,
And a generous amount of cinnamon.
No butter, no heating, just cold.
Delicious ! ! !

We called it "Rice Pudding".
But that was just 'our' name for it,
As it wasn't at all like real rice pudding.

I recently tried it with some of teresa-mn's wild rice.
Also very delicious ! ! !

And no, I did NOT grow up in the south,
nor did any of my family.
So I doubt it is considered
A southern/soul food dish.

My parents were German immigrants, though.
So I usually attributed anything 'different'
To that background.

Or maybe it was just doing the best you can
On very limited resources.

As a kid, my favorite breakfast cereal was plain hot white rice w/ just milk & sugar.

This is an example of cultural differences - I was expecting a thread on Asian 'sweet rice', which is also known as glutinous rice. An extra-starchy, short grain rice that DH and I love, especially with the Thai dish of smoked chili eggplant and tofu.

Also cooked with coconut milk and served with fresh mango as a dessert. It's also the rice used in making Japanese mochi, both sweet and savory.

This US regional 'sweet rice' is the sweet cousin of the traditional savory Japanese breakfast, called cha zu ke: hot green tea poured over leftover white rice, served with a salty preserved seawood (nori) spread with some toasted sesame seeds sprinkled in. My immigrant grandmother (Issei, first generation JapAm) loved the stuff and ate it almost every day.

DH loves sweet rice for breakfast, just butter, sugar and a little milk, no cinnamon or anything else. I. on the other hand, sometimes like cinnamon and sometimes I also use brown sugar on it.

Rusty, I was sure that somewhere you had a little bit of the South in you.

Jude, I've been in South Texas since 1962.
So I guess I do have some 'south' in me.
But I wasn't raised here.
I grew up on a farm in the Great Lakes area.

So my cooking style, food choices, etc.,
Are pretty much a 'mix'.
Yankee, German, Southern, whatever.

Well I think my friend that ate it was eaten because they were dirt poor and couldn't afford much to eat, I can remember going to the store with her and paying with food stamps. Rice was about the cheapest dish you could fix back then. I can remember a pot of extremely sticky rice...beyond that the details are fuzzy other than I know she put sugar and butter in it...probably just to her taste(each bowl added their own to it)...I'm pretty much 99.9% sure there were no spices added...and I cannot really remember if milk was added but I think so...we're talking 40 years ago...HA!

What I do know is it's not rice pudding at all! Imagine your husband disappointment when you fixed rice pudding YUCK! :( HA!

It wasn't just those who were "dirt poor" & southern eating sweetened rice. I was in California & not dirt poor. But, we also liked rice pudding with fresh raisins straight from our 2,000 acre fields of Thompson Seedless grapes that I helped harvest & dry. Rice was inexpensive but I don't think whether one ate rice defined financial status. Sorta like pinto beans - even those who could afford fillet still enjoyed a pot of beans with cornbread.

What difference does it make where it came from. I didn't ever say it was just for the poor or just for the southern. I suspected they ate it because they were poor and also they were southern. My family didn't ever eat rice for breakfast...we weren't poor. It was just an observation and a guess on my part. It appears from reading this thread it was a dish eaten by all...personally I thought it was gross and much preferred bacon and eggs and toast...

I've been known to eat rice pudding for breakfast, so this actually sounds good to me. I think I might actually like it better than bacon and eggs. Although Moe wouldn't. LOL!

Thanks for the hints...next time I have leftover rice, I'll give this a try. BTW, the rice pudding was good, but wasn't sweet enough for hubby. (I substituted 1/4 cup Splenda for 1/2 cup sugar...should have used 1/2 cup Splenda!)

Lived in southern Illinois all my life and grew up eating rice with milk, butter, and sugar. I still like it and eat it. We always use hot rice, let butter melt in it, add sugar and then milk.
