Saw on my AOL homepage that eyeliners are out and pink lipstick is the best to look younger!

I only use eyeliner on my lower lid!

So do you upper and lower line your eyes?

And what's your lipstick color favorite?

Threw away my OLD very old liptsticks today, and bought a lilac and frosty pink, each!

Thinking a cabana boy might like my colors better, tee hee, NOT!

Sometimes I do upper...sometimes lower...sometimes both. But never lipstick. Ever. There is something in lipstick that gives me a scratchy throat. Oh...and me not having an upper lip is another reason. So, I guess the cabana boy won't care for me too much. LOL

I gave up liquid eyeliners in the 1960s. I use eyeliner pencils, usually in a soft, smoky grey, upper and lower. If I do just the lower I tend to resemble Minnie Mouse. :-)

I seem to be . . . um . . . overly supplied with lipsticks. I have fun buying the Free With Purchase versions of expensive lipsticks on eBay. I love "off" shades, nothing bright. I often wear deeper shades if I go out at night. My favorites seem to rotate. Right now the two that are getting quite a bit of daytime use are Venus, a semi-sheer mauvey-pink from Almay, and Clinique's Glow Bronze, a shimmery beige.

Eyeliner and lipstick are the only makeup products I use.

Thank you all for your opinions and suggestions; I've found some nice, soft pencils that glide on really well and I no longer stretch out my eyelid:) However, I've noticed a lot lately (people on TV, magazine ads, women I work with), that quite a few people extend their eyeliner part way up the lid. I always assumed that eyeliner was used to line the eye--around the lash line, so this is how I apply mine. And when I try applying it further up after years of applying it just to the lash line, I think I look like a freak! But then maybe that's why my eyes looks so small and tired all the time...lol. I don't know if I can get used to a thicker liner line; more importantly, I don't know if other people will be able to get used to it! How much liner do you all apply? Just curious... NARS Larger Than Life Long-Wear Eyeliner; pencil liner. If you apply it and let it "dry down" for just a few seconds, it is virtually smudge-proof (it can be smudged, if you smudge it right after applying). They just came out with a med-dark brown color. It also comes in a bronze-y brown and a black, in addition to more "colorful" colors as well. Stila Smudge Pots would be a close second (not the sticks, they seemed to dry out, and the caps never stayed on). The Smudge Pots looked really nice on, and held up very, very well. But you have to apply it with a brush, and sometimes takes multiple dips of the brush back into the "pot" to get full coverage (though the nice dark line looked great once you got it). I find using the pencils (NARS, LTL pencils) to be much quicker, and it holds up just as well. This post was edited by cat_mom on Sun, Aug 11, 13 at 13:48

Vent hood question - make-up air turbulence, acceptable neg pressure?

This is an issue that requires some measurements and some analysis. To even know where you are you need to measure the pressure in the house relative to outside the house as a function of different settings of vent air flow and MUA air flow. Either hire someone to make the measurements or buy (cost is fairly modest, as I recall) a differential air pressure device. In test kitchens, the means of introducing MUA is via a perforated wall some distance from the test stove/vent air handling equipment (hood). What is desirable is that the MUA, when it gets to the air volume between the cooktop and the hood entry aperture, be relatively non-turbulent. Introducing MUA at one's feet next to the stove may or may not achieve this. Often the toe kick spaces there are too small, and may, depending on configuration, aim at some other structure (wall, island, whatever) that will force the air flow up. Now there is turbulent air all around the cook and the hood. I think the MUA exit area(s) should not be too much smaller than the hood entrance area unless the MUA injection point is fairly far from the hood. In a (completely burger odor free) burger joint in Concord NH there is a CaptiveAire system in which the MUA is expelled downward from the ceiling in front of the hood. (This aperture is actually part of the hood assembly.) I would estimate that the MUA aperture is roughly half that of the typical very large commercial hood aperture, although I cannot see all of the hood aperture from the customer seating area to be very exact about this. In my residential configuration, a 3 x 3 foot ceiling diffuser is used about 20 ft down a hall from my 10 sq. ft. aperture hood. This hall delivery should slow down the air velocity to about 37 ft/min, which is a slight breeze -- less than a half mph. I haven't pressurized the MUA yet, but I have seen the effect of an interior split cycle air conditioner head spilling air toward the hood, there is significant plume displacement. Is your MUA source via a basement, or via the roof? It might be better if you dumped the MUA at the ceiling directed away from the hood such that the air takes a longer path to the hood aperture. Or dump it into diffusers at various locations in ceilings connected to the kitchen. (This might be a casus belli if not heated.) Or use a lot more toe kick area. Besides measurement, I would check that with windows open, MUA off, and hood on, that you can cook something and see it fully captured and contained by the hood system. Then as you close up windows, and do whatever you are doing (manually?) to set MUA flow, does this start interrupting the capture efficiency? And yes, if you don't have a closed loop controller then both hood and MUA should have continuously variable controls. By analysis I meant making a gross estimation from the hood system fan curve and the properties of your vent system of what flow rate you may be achieving. (There are contractors who can measure this by temporarily replacing a door with a measurement device.) Ditto for the MUA system. What is its fan curve vs. ducting, filtering, diffuser pressure loss, and heating scheme, if present? If your actual replacement air is 200 CFM, then ideally you want the MUA to be 200 CFM less than the hood can pull when the house pressure relative to outside is zero. One expects that if the house pressure is positive, more air will flow out the hood system. But in your case I suspect, as did opaone above, that there is really a lot of turbulence around the hood and this turbulence is interfering with the cooking plumes attempting to rise to the capture area (the hood entry aperture). kas

Well, I can be long and rambly too, and suggest reviewing the many hood threads here to see that demonstrated. I can also suggest that if you, @Margaret Davis, do so, you will learn a lot more about both hood requirements and make-up air (MUA) requirements. I'll supplement the information on this site, first by noting my astonishment that whoever wrote that blurb for Proline seems to be missing the most fundamental concept -- no air leaves the kitchen that doesn't get replaced. No reports of imploded houses due to hood blowers pulling a vacuum have ever come to my notice. With respect to the requirement that outgoing air be matched by incoming air, the size of the kitchen is irrelevant. The blower size is irrelevant. How long you run your hood is irrelevant. There is always a balance such that the actual hood duct airflow matches what leaks into the house, or is allowed to flow into the house, or is deliberately blown into the house. Gag the MUA, and the house interior pressure drops until the hood blower volumetric flow rate matches what can leak in at that pressure drop. The controlling aspect is the 'fan curve' of the hood blower when MUA is passive (not blown) and the combination of fan curves when the MUA is active (blown). The pressure that determines where one can operate on the fan curve is determined by pressure loss passing the hood baffles, the ducting, the exterior cap if not included in the fan curve, and the MUA pressure loss getting air back into the kitchen. With a large diameter passive MUA or imperfectly tuned active MUA, you are likely to see the actual hood air flow to be only 2/3 of the zero static pressure flow rate, that is, 2/3 of 1200 or 800 CFM. Modern codes require, as @Celedon noted, deliberate (active or passive) MUA when the hood rated blower size (not actual flow rate) exceeds 400 CFM. This is to ensure that any combustion appliances that are present, or may be present in the future, are not back-drafted by negative house pressure thereby introducing carbon monoxide into the house. Second, I won't go into hood requirements here as those should be easily found among the hood threads, and in any case you seem to have picked a hood or hood size. However, I will address the vertical duct question. Generally, the highest pressure losses will be the hood baffles and the MUA if passive, depending on duct size and filtering. So longer ducts will drop the overall flow, but perhaps not too much relative to these causes. This can be evaluated by plugging the duct parameters into on-line calculators that may be found by searching. Third, most ventilation noise is air turbulence noise, dominated by that at the blade tips of the blower. Duct turbulence will also contribute. Silencers reduce this, and may (as in the case for me) reduce the noise such that baffle turbulence (hiss) dominates. An advantage of running the duct into the attic would be that in the attic there may be room for a silencer to be inserted between the external blower and the hood. One can also angle the ducting there so that the external blower is at an advantageous point on the roof. No matter what tortuous path you choose, and the ducts you have sketched aren't really that long, be sure that the chase allows access to the ducting in case cleaning is needed (usually rare in residential cooking). In cold climates it is best to keep the duct warm over as much length as possible, so exterior ducting may want to be in a chase if very long. With a larger chase, a silencer can be put closer to the hood, which helps suppress duct noise. Fire protection in the chase may be an issue; discuss with your code enforcement officer. You should plan on using at least 10-inch ducting, but note that the Fantech 10-inch duct silencer is 14 inches in diameter by 3 ft long.

LOL Glenda. You go girl.

I have very deep set eyes so I rarely wear eyeliner but I have always read that we "older" ladies should only line the upper lid. It gives a bit of a "lift".

I also think that frosty anything just doesn't work well on most women in their mid 40's or certainly over 50.

Personally I think a medium to darkish pink or mauve creamy lipstick looks best. I only use matte eyeshadow because the frost just highlights the crepiness.

I find it very strange that light reflecting make-up is being marketed to the middle aged woman today. When doing theatrical make-up and trying to age a person the first trick is use highlight on the fleshy areas of the face in order to give the illusion of deeper creases elsewhere.

Want to look younger? Less is more. Sheer foundation,sheer cream blush and matte shadows and pinky lipstick. Minimal frost. JMHO

I use liner on upper and lower eyelids.Start in the center of the eye,smudging it as you go with short strokes and bring it out to the corner.Use a brown pencil like an eyebrow pencil.Black is too harsh,especially on us "older" ladies and those of us who have silver or white hair.LOL Don't care for liquid liners at all and never have.
As for lipstick colors that make us look younger,I think whatever compliments your skin tone is best.I personally don't look good in pink lipstick! I wear a mauvie beige color all the time.Shimmery or frosted ones are a no-no.Less is more as we get older.I think the best look for an older woman is a more natural look.Trying to look "younger" just makes one look fake and most of the time doesn't work! LOL

Glad to hear pink lipstick is back in style ! I prefered to wear it even when it wasn't but it was so hard to find. Everything was brownish or too dark for me.I don't wear any eye makup. Not that I don't want too but several years ago I got a bacterial eye infection which I blamed on mascara.

You should throw away your mascara after six months at the longest (cosmetic companies sometimes even say after only three months), and start using a new tube (or whatever type of container it comes in).

And never, ever, let anyone else use your mascara.

Each to their own !!!

I went out to breakfast with some girls I went to school with.

Two of them had eyeliner on. and one had light pink lipstick...

The one with the lightpink lipstick and the eyeliner (on the top and a little on the lower , just from the outer corner about half way in then kind of blended.
She looked so young and pretty the other two looked like me....about 63 years old...LOL

So there you have it...I don't think older women should wear med to darker lipstick...it follows their wrinkles and makes them show up more.

I always wear eyeliner.

Funny you should mention this. I teach preschool. One of my students told me that her mom got a tattoo on her eye. So, when Mom picked her up, I had to inquire. Mom is a flight attendant. Turns out she had permanent eyeliner placed on her eyes (tattoos, I guess). She said all the flight attendants do it. I admit I was intrigued, because I'd love not to have to apply my eyeliner everyday, but tattoos on the eyes?????

My lips are very full, so I don't look good in dark lipstick. I try to choose something in a medium shade.

LOL that eyeliner is out. Not around here!

I use a cake eyeliner on the upper lid, sometimes smudge a dark shadow on the lower lid, sometimes use a pencil. I have tried a lot of lipsticks, trying to find one that will last and will not make DH end up wearing it too. I love Maybelline's Forever Lipcolor. My favorite shade is Berry.

I agree with Lindsey on the mascara. It should be replaced with a new one every 6 mo. (if it last that long) I need a new one now, but have to wait until I go to Omaha. Our town doesn't carry Eliz. Arden. or Clinique.

Tattooed Eyelids, Eyebrows and Lips are very popular now. But, my friend with the Tattooed Lip liner looks freaky. Sorry! I didn't ask about it, but you can tell when her lipstick wore off.

I use eyeshadow applied with a thin liner brush under my eyelids and over the eyelids just at the outer corners. I don't wear Mascara most of the time.

About replacing the mascara....I don't keep mine very long because my eyes water a lot...and I blame that on old mascara..So if my eyes seem to be watering more that usual I get new mascara in a hurry.

My eyes drive me nuts.

My doctor says, Oh I think it's just dry eyes...and gave me a bunch of oily samples...then all I had was oily watering eyes...didn't help at all.

I need to go someplace for another opinion.

I don't care if eyeliner is "in" or "out", I look washed out without it. I use a smokey grey eyeliner pencil and smudge the lower lid. This thread reminded me I need to buy new mascara.

Intherain, one of my staff got permanent eyeliner as her 40th birthday gift. She loves it and I understand why. It would make life much easier....but I would hate going thru the agony. I am a coward.

I wear eyeliner daily but recently had to give up the liquid from Lancome. I have used it for years and years but they must have changed something in the formula because now my eyes tear and the eyelashes on one eye fell out!

A friend of mine did a full lip tatoo of color..they just "up'd" her natural color..
I know a few woman with eyeliner tatoos and lip liner..but the lip girl had it done dark..so she looked hideous when wearing lip gloss!

Pencil and eyeshadow liners disappear on me after a few hours..basically all that's left at the end of the day is mascara.(Alhtough I haven't tried liquid.)I pitch out my mascara about every 3 months..once it starts to drop "shadows" it's in the trash.

My favorite lip stuff is Avon's Glazeware in Berry Cool. It's a neutral mauve with a bit of shimmer.

I line both top & bottom. What irks me is the high price of liner pencils and the last one I bought didn't even twist up for more "lead'. It was just about 1/4" and was used up in aout a week. I used to buy Maybellene Expert Eyes pencils, but haven't found them for a while. Dottie

If I actually put on make-up (which is only a couple times a week), I line the top, and sometimes a little on the bottom. I have small eyes so if I wear to much eye make-up it looks bad.

I had both my eyes and lips tattooed about 3 years ago. I love both. My lips now have an edge to them. With the cream she put on my eyes it wasn't too painful. The pain when she did my lips was almost too much. My lips are the shade of my natural lip color.

I wish I could line my eyes, but I blink and make wavy lines or a big mess. It's just so hard, but I think I would look better with it.
