Can we talk Halloween party, please?

I teach at a small liberal arts university, and Tuesday is our student reception for our English majors. We've all been instructed to "bring something"--no guidelines this time. Obviously, something Halloween-y is in order, but what?

This will be maybe 100 people or slightly more, no cooking facilities on site, and, while I don't teach that day, I do have an hour drive from home to campus, so the food has to be able to travel pretty much in its prepared form. The reception is from 12 to 1 meaning the students will be visiting us instead of going to lunch (not the wisest time, in my opinion, but they don't let me make the decisions).

What would you take that can be made relatively quickly, easily and without breaking the Christmas budget?

I had a Halloween Party last night and I served a pot of pumpkin soup ( the savory kind with garlic, onions, cumin and chili powder) and another pot of black bean soup...pureed....
Halloween colors!....served with regular and blue corn chips.
You could keep the soup hot in a crock pot.

Linda, those are both great ideas and terrific together.
Slowlane, is there any communication/co-ordination with the other folks bringing food. Approx how many are bringing food?
Cookies, cupcakes, chips etc are always acceptable and easy to fix and transport.
Baked beans are good or Fresh veggie chunks/slices.

soeur Will be interesting to see how these Persimmon tomatoes turn out, eh? Will keep an eye on Kimberly, Earl's Faux and Akers W. Virginia and let you know how they do for us. In the event that we do have the fusarium wilt in our soil, we started a new garden area some distance away from the possibly contaminated soil and have several dozen types of tomatoes there. Will still plant a few tomatoes in the same area as last year where we encountered so many problems, in the hopes that the problem is not fusarium or any other systemic soil diseases but merely the high heat and the fact that we may well have overwatered last year. johnski Would liked to have tried your methods but learned that the Green Guard is a genetically modified product. Thanks for the information. lumper20 Please feel free to share all you know about tomato growing. We have very good luck with heirloom green beans here and are planting in a different location this year after having success for the past 6 years in the same spot, which I think is pushing our luck. Ha...I still don't know how to successfully grow green peppers, but will try again with more pourous material in the soil. I started the seed too late, heck, some of the hot peppers required constant germination temperatures steady in the 80's. We can't keep our little hoop house that warm at night. Think I'll just buy some from the nursery, perhaps have a bit better luck. Perhaps you could start a new thread here on growing green peppers. Good growing to all, Pat

Isnt that silly? I have no idea why they include a cupcake soap and forgot to ask my husband it it really came with it. I am 5'2" - probably not as short as your DD"s :) But not to tall either. Oh and we took out the water saving disk. I think some of the reviews people didnt do that. They make it easy to take out but in there so it complies with laws I think. I dont take a long shower either and is actually shorter now that I have a good showerhead to rinse my hair quickly.

I recommend PolyWhey for a clear waterbased finish, it's a fabulous finish -- uses milk whey instead of urethane. Has virtually no odor and dries in about an hour. Amazing stuff. Did my staircase with it last year (it dried before the cats even woke from their nap) and it wears like iron. I've switched over to using it entirely for any poly project. There's also BioShield Wood Counter Finish, OSMO, SoyGuard and other oil types that work well and can be recoated easily. You can stain under/with any of these using non-aniline (food-safe) stains. I don't know how much work you want to do, but I saw these and thought they'd be fun and inexpensive Halloween food. Even if you left off the veining, they'd be cute.

Soup would be great, and I may use that combination for my grand kids, but I don't have a Crockpot big enough for the gathering.

About 10 or 12 of us will bring food, and this time, there's no co-ordination at all. That's why I'm stressing :P

And I saw those eggs, too, and loved them, but I work all day Monday and then have to take the grand kids to soccer Monday night, so I don't think I'll have time for them this year.

What about pimento cheese sandwiches? Dark bread and "orange" cheese should look appropriately seasonal, I hope. I have a Linzer cookie cutter with Halloween inserts--I could make the cheese Monday night and assemble the sandwiches Tuesday morning. It's an hour drive, but I could package the sandwiches and keep them in an ice chest; then plate them on site. Think that would work?

Fingers made from sugar cookie dough with almond fingernails. There's lots of recipes and photo's out there but the more realistic ones use cookie dough not ladyfingers.

Awesome idea for your Halloween party:
Roll out sugar cookie dough into a thin line (dough will spread when baking), score at "knuckles" and apply an almond shard at the tip. Bake as directed. Brush cooled cookies with a little cocoa-powder to add contrast!

I personally think your sandwiches are a great idea. Easy to make, easy to transport, and who doesn't like pimento cheese? And you are even planning to make them "orange and black" cut into special shapes. Perfect!! They would also go well with soup if anyone else brings it.

Those are easily the spookiest versions of those cookies I've ever seen! They sound easy, too. I'll do a batch of those for the grand kids, too, but I don't think mine will look so realistic.

Thanks for your help, everyone. I'll go with the sandwiches since I've made myself hungry for them now :)
