bathroom ventillation

I am having a bathroom fan installed in my 1930's house. My handyman doesn't appear to be very handy, (he sawed into a radiator line and has had one problem after another). The question I have is, how many hours on average would it take to install a $25.00 fan in a bathroom? It needs to be vented out the side of the house and he'll have to cut through brick, but we're not even done with the electrical yet. He's been here two full days - how do I know when it is time to call someone else? Thanks.

Probably 1/2 a day.a few hours, 2 days is too long?????

I hope he is charging by the job and not the hour!

I am curious how he intends to break through the brick?

this can be a DIY job.. I DIY'd mine at least.. but im a DIY nut.. they sell kits at your local home depot or lowes.. you will need access to the wiring to wire a switch to the fan.. access between the ceiling and the roof to run vent hose.. and be comfortable with the idea that you are cutting a hole in your roof! but it can be done..

I used a Panasonic Whisperline in-line blower. Biggest problem is that it needs a timer switch, it's not obvious when it's running so it gets left on all the time. Venting out the soffits is a Bad Idea. The warm moist air will flow up the adjacent soffit vents and create a mold farm in your attic (been there, done that). Vent it through an end wall if you can, otherwise through the roof. Use insulated, smooth wall, rigid piping, not the flex junk.

I feel like Lowes used to sell something a bit like the one you linked -- nickel ring with frosted glass globe -- but the fan and light could be wired to separate switches. What don't you like about that? If you're not feeling it, maybe you should put the fan there (white kind, painted to match the ceiling) and put a separate light that you like over the mirror or wherever... I see they have some other styles that I haven't tried and can't vouch for... Home Depot: Here's a cool one available on Houzz:

Your bathroom ventilation looks awful tbh. It shouldn't surprise you that there are some issues with it. You need to change the duct or at least clean it extensively. I had almost the same problem when I got my first apartment. The things were quite bad with the duct system and I needed to repair it. Not only that but I had to clean the tubes. I didn't know how exactly to do that, so I hired professionals in this field. I called the guys from https://epicductcleaning.com.au/duct-cleaning-melton/ and they helped me to clean the duct. Now my ventilation system works perfectly.

Depends on how much work you are looking at.
Is there power available in the ceiling at the fan location?
Fishing concealed wiring in older houses is a crap shoot in mamy cases. Sometimes it goes smooth as can be, other times there are obstructions, and sometimes chopping opent he wall and ceiline to gain access are about the only way. Know you get to add in plaster reapair.
Are the joists going in a convenient direction for the vent line? Running perpendicular to the joists is another big issue, and often requires major ceiling damage (and sometime re-enforcement of teh joists that are bored).
Cutting brick is actually not hard at all. Spot the locatin by drilling from the inside out through the brick woth a 1/2 inch masonry bit in a hammer drill, then drill from outside in a rough circle and chisel out the material. A single hole (up to at least 8-10 inchs diameter) does not require a ledger or anything. A clean hole should take a couple hours at most.
