Have you ever bought a floor model appliance?

I just posted on the Laundry forum about my search for a new washer. Based on comments there and elsewhere, Speed Queen is sounding more and more like what I need.

My local appliance store is offering their Speed Queen floor models at what seem to be good prices. The washers look just fine, as far as I can see. They've never been used, just looked at.

Waddya think?

I think we have bought at least 2 floor models...and both were good appliances...

It would depend on the item and the warranty.

A washing machine, people will have opened and closed that baby numerous times a day. The motor and such would be in pristine condition because they've never been used. Hmmm, I think I'd go over the cover with a fine-toothed comb and if it were nice and secure, and the warranty would cover anything that did happen to the cover, then I'd get it. I love a bargain.

"If any of you have gotten great deals negotiating floor models" Sure people have gotten fantastic deals on floor models, so have paid more than what a new one would cost because they got caught up in the hype. You've got to what what things cost and your threshold of pain $$$ wise is before you even get wet. I have personally gotten display stuff at 50% off of cost before. Now this is not the norm but insane deals are possible. You also have to be luck, and be in the right place at the right time for super deals. " any reason not to?" yep, risk. Some don't carry or have a more limited warranty, sometimes there is damage, sometimes they are actually used and quite dirty. I saw a dishwasher at a dealer the other day that was on "display sale". It was the working kitchen's DW so got used everyday by the staff and looked like it. It was 20% off retail price and I'm pretty sure is being discontinued. Good deal ??? "Is there any seasonality to the business" not really, especially when it come to price. If you don't need them for a while you'll have a big advantage finding something.

update! I've gotten it about 90% fixed! It wasn't a store "mode" exactly, but the appliances all had things disconnected. The 2 ovens had the coils disconnected, and the magnetron in the microwave was also disconnected. I attached pics showing the parts that I found. The 30" oven and microwave were straightforward, because they were simple harnesses. but the 24" oven is another matter. There are 10 separate spade connectors, and I don't know which wires to connect to which. see the linked photo set for pics. Is there a way to figure this out without a whirlpool service visit? We did this several years ago, and it worked out ok for us, but just barely. Make sure that there is no chance for a construction lien to attach to the house after the closing--make sure that the title insuance company deletes the construciton lien exception from the title insurance policy and make the builder provide all of the lien waivers that the title insurance company needs to do that. As I said, we lucked out, but our builder went bankrupt soon after we closed and the person who bought the partially completed house down the road wasn't as lucky and construciton liens did attach to their house after the closing so they ended up paying for lots and lots of things twice. They did get a big digger out of the bankruptcy--just what they wanted--but they paid thousands and thousands of dollars extra for that house (One thing I remember is that it was two story brick colonial and they had to pay for the brick and the installation of the brick twice!). The only other thing would be to make sure that you get a homeowner's warranty as most (but not all!) defects will become appararent within a year of construction. We had several problems from shoddy, but hidden, construciton/plumbing/wiring elements that became appparent within the first few years after we purchased the house but our builder was already bankrupt--we had to get a back hoe and plumber out to our house on Christmas eve one year because they didn't use galvanized fittings (I think that's the term) to bring the water into the house so the fittings rusted and got holes in them flooding the basement, etc. 5 houses in our subdivison that were built by the same builder had this same problem--just not on Christmas Ever. And then there was the . . . . If you are involved in construction early, you can watch what the builder is doing. But if you get involved when the walls are in, lots of defects may be covered up.

"If anything I find my tastes are influenced negatively here, not in a bad way really, just differently. I love funky bohemian combined with traditional and modern but don't feel that love from most posters so sometimes I second guess myself. There are some canvas prints at Pier One I am crazy about yet they are cheap. Will I hate them because they look cheap? ($30 each btw) Will they make my decor seem too wild? Cheap? As an artist, most other artists abhor this kind of thing and usually are quite snobbish about having only originals in their house. They would not buy a cheap print from Pier One! So, can I over come this pressure and the pressure here (subtle however) and actually get what I love? I do not like the vast majority of art people choose for their home so I would never ask anyone here "what do you think of this print?" I'm rambling but I guess it's all about keeping myself true to me." Bumblebeez, I feel your pain, really I do. :) Something that would truly *speak* to me, would be a gliclee of Monet's Sunrise. It was a work that was derided by critics in its time and I had the opportunity to see it in the Monet Museum in Paris. It would have much more meaning to me, and to my husband, than something I bought off of Etsy or Ebay. At least you, as an artist, have the pedigree be able to get away with buying what you want (not that you should have to make excuses). It's the same way about furniture. If it's not heirloom or CL, there will always be detractors. I just try to suck it up and decorate to the best of my abilities.

Yes, we bought a washer and dryer and used them for almost 15 years..

Yes, we bought a refrigerator like that about 18 years ago. It was marked down quite a bit, and we've never had trouble with it.

We bought a floor model fridge, it was fine other than a couple of little scratches and dents. Saved $400. We picked that one because of the style/model. Turned out it was discontinued and if we wanted one like it, we had to have that particular one. I wasn't crazy about the owies it had, but I can live with them. I liked that fridge more than any of the other ones they had, dents and all.

Yes, a washer and dryer, and saved a little bundle. Very glad I did about 12 years ago. Nary a problem....I hope I didn't just jinx things!

We had a floor model Amana washer and dryer. They are still working for the people we eventually sold them to, after 15 years.

We had a floor model Maytag washer and dryer. We sold them as part of the house sale. They are still working 8 years later.

We have a floor model Maytag washer and dryer and a Maytag refrigerator...and they are still running strong two and a half years later.

Yep, bought a refrigerator from Best Buy 13 years ago. Still going strong so far. I have it out in my shop now as we have replaced it with a newer one.
