that drawer under your cabinet to the counter (dish hutch)

how tall is a good height for that little drawer? 6" ? 8"?

mine is spec'ed for around 9 and I think it's too tall.

looking for advice.

Are you talking about a base cabinet with a top drawer?

5" would be great. I have some with 3" and they're stupid. Can't put much in them at all.
9" is rather a lot of space wasted, unless you're planning one of those inside the drawer, cutlery pull out things, I'd think.

No. I mean a drawer under a dish hutch that goes down to the counter. So an upper cabinet that comes all the way down to the counter but with a drawer underneath. Mist people seem to call them dish hutches or just cabinet to the ciunter

I have Marvel 24". I chose it because it seemed to hold more than any of the others. I use it for produce, but also wine, juice and milk. It works very well. And it's true that you can put tall bottles upright in the lower drawer. As far as I can tell it holds temperature fine, but I haven't measured. The produce stays fresh as well as in my Miele fridge. Cons: It's true that it is noisy, especially when it's first cooling down. It doesn't cycle on that often, and in a busy kitchen it's not bad, but in a family room or similar it might be too loud. Also, the gasket on the lower drawer is kind of puffy and it doesn't line up quite right. I'm sure I could get someone out to try to fix it, but I've had too much else to do. Or I might be stuck with it. It's no big deal. Just a minor irritation. In a more prominent location it would be another story. I agree with Lascatx on the Perlick reputation for quality.

thanks for the replies so far. Here is my range wall if that helps you form any opinions on how deep it should be. The one things is I certainly won't plan on really using that counter space but I can see how it would be nice to stack dinner plates in front of it out of the dishwasher and then lift them into the hutch. [img][/img] This is a first pass design with the hutch. I am adding a drawer and probably will go with glass. In adding the hutch we needed to shift the range over.....so I lost one drawer bank but increased the sizes of the others (before I had 2 25" wide drawer banks and two 18" wide drawer banks, and now I have one 32" wide and 2 27" wide). Also I am looking at extending the cabinetry out a little towards the slider (seen to the right of the plan) and dividing those inches to each side of the range, making even wider drawer banks, but not adding drawer banks. Do you mean under the overhang ("under their seating area")? Don't do it. You won't be able to get into the top drawer. My island is small, with Marvel fridge drawers in the middle, and small drawers on either side. Behind the drawers are the sink cabinet on one end, and a pullout for boards on the other end. On the back of the island is a drop down table, so it's basically a table height deep shelf on hinged brackets, underneath a 6" overhang. I do feel warmth from the fridge on the soapstone ledge over the middle when seated at the table. It's not disruptive, but I try not to put the bread or chocolate right there, so they won't get stale faster. Similarly, I try to keep medicines/vitamins away. It's merely warm. Nowhere near hot. But I try to be careful. Noise is another story. Marvel (best drawer configuration when I bought five years ago) is pretty loud when it cycles and mine is on a platform to fit right as the island is a bit higher than standard. The platform makes it louder. I keep a little TV on a little lazy susan on the island so I can actually look while prepping, and I often sit at the table side to relax in front of the TV while doing tedious things like cutting kale for chips, trimming artichokes, or shucking peas. The noise from the fridge bothered me a lot when it was first installed. It only took a few months, however, to get used to it. The mind can actually subtract a familiar sound like that from its perception of local sound, meaning I don't have to change the volume when it cycles (which I do for the washer which is ten feet away). I don't know if that means the washer is louder or just not heard enough to be familiar enough to be subtracted. The table really only seats two, though more could crowd around, and even for two, we generally eat in the dining room, but on the few occasions when two are eating solo meals at the island that happen to coincide, I haven't noticed any interference with conversation or comfort by fridge noise. But "company" never eats in the kitchen, so it might just be that since we're used to the sound, we don't pay heed to it. Vibration is no problem.

I wish I had done more. I love having the accessibility at counter height which the kids can reach easily. We do have the counter space to afford it. As to the 30" and 12", I don't have those, and it's smart to get feedback about it, but to me it seems like one of those "If you like the look, go for it". I can't imagine any difference in function. We do have landing space close by so pulling things out is not an issue. We keep plastic cups, coffee mugs and coffee supplies, which we use daily, on the lower shelves, and other things on the top two shelves. Our cabinet maker left a little space below so that when the counters went in, they would be sure to fit. Once they were installed, he came back and put a piece of trim around the bottom, which he then caulked. I haven't found it a problem to keep clean at all. I'm out of town right now so this is the only picture I have.

It's usually 3 6" drawers or 2 9" drawers to keep the standard 18" of space between the uppers and lowers. That way, all of your uppers line up. That/s drawer front dimensions, not interior dimensions.

I know several GW-ers have this....I would love a little more input as we are down to the wire on my kitchen layout and the last thing I need to do is decide all my drawer heights! It looks to me like most of them have a 6" drawer height (same as a top drawer would be in a bank of lower drawers) Just want confirmation.

Do you have a plan for what you want to put in there? That might help you decide. I know it's kind of hard to imagine at this stage, especially when you've never had one before.

Too many varied cabinet heights in that pic. It needs to be cleaned up and unified. The drawers on the counter should leave the upper cabinet being the same height as the others. The glass uppers should be a consistent horizontal line around the room, including over the oven. It's too higgledy piggeldy.

And no way are you getting an tha6 tall drawer under a double oven. There's something off about many of these measurements.

I can see what you mean about being glass over the ovens but what is of about the other measurements? Why is there a problem with the draw under the ovens? Please advise. I am being too supportive the drawings very soon.

Shoot. Phone auto corrected. What I meant to say is that I need to approve the cabinet drawings soon so if there are changes I need to make them quickly.

I don't know 100% what I would put there as the main reason I wanted the drawer there was so I can set something on the counter in front of it and so open the door, like a stack of plates or a couple bowls, etc.

Things that comes to mind are flatware or take out menus. Not large bowls or Tupperware or anything like that.

9" from the counter to the bottom of the upper glass cabinet.
The exterior of actual drawer is 4.5 tall, interior of the drawer is 3.25" tall.
The whole upper cabinet including the drawer is 62.25".
It's a narrow drawer but I've has no problem utilizing the drawer space.
