I would do a set of 24" drawers and a blind corner with a 9" door on it rather than completely void the corner next to the dishwasher (it may need to be 21" drawers and a 3" filler to clear the DW) I know blind bases are not ideal but they can be used for things that you use infrequently. Is there any way you could access the corner on the sink side from the other room? If not, I would probably blind base this corner too: I put a shelf in my old one for long rolls of foil and bulky things like paper towels that I could reach in and grab.

thank you, yes, I will discuss what options we have for the corners with the KD. They cannot be accessed from any other room because the kitchen faces the street. Thanks for your input.

Just a few questions, if you don't mind. What room is on the other side of the fridge? Is that a pub table? What's on the other side of that wall? Are the windows already in those locations?

The brown table is for informal meals, it is just two of us in the house. On the other side of the wall next to the table are stairs to the basement. Both walls that form the staircase will become half walls. Behind them there is the living room and a picture window to the garden.

As you enter the house, the kitchen is on the left and the dining room on the right. So that on the other side of the fridge is a hall where we get into the house, and then the dining table.

The windows are already in these unfortunate locations. Here is another drawing that might answer your questions:

hi... we have a different layout (still in progress), but ended up with the same base cabs: one 33" drawer, and two 24" drawers. looks like similar linear feet of uppers too.

i'm still worried we don't have enough storage (just two of us also). did you do any kind of assessment of your kitchen items and where they'll go? what are you going to use as your food "pantry" vs. dish vs. pots storage?

maybe you already have storage in your dining room? we did end up using one blind corner, but we can access from the back side. oh, small spaces are tough, aren't they? :(

How exciting to be able to compare notes!
I am not worried at all about the storage space. The main reason we are remodeling is lack of countertop. Storage you can find in other places in the house, but not countertop.

The number of cabinets is exactly the same we have now: 3 uppers and 3 lowers. The main difference is that 2 of our current lowers are composed of one shallow drawer above fixed shelves. These shelves are completely unutilized: only a very thin slice in the front of each shelf gets utilized, who knows what is in the back. So by replacing these by drawers we will gain storage. Also the uppers will be 15" going all the way to the ceiling, and all the cabinets will be frameless.

We do have plenty of other storage: I store most cleaning supplies, brooms, papers to be recycled, flowerpots, in a bathroom closet. There is a pantry underneath a staircase where I store the rice cooker and the huge pans that I use only on Thanksgiving. We will have a shallow-shelves pantry right next but outside the kitchen. I plan to store there all the cans except the ones we will soon use. Those will go in a drawer in a kitchen.

What I have not decided is if I want the three cabinets with 3 drawers each, or 2 with 3 drawers and 1 with 4 drawers. Have you? Currently, with the 3 cabinets, I have 3 shallow drawers: one holds silverware and kitchen towels, the other one tea, garbage bags, sandwich bags; the third one holds cans. I think I want at least another shallow drawer for spices. All our pots fit in two drawers.

Are you downsizing from the storage that you currently have? What is your layout? Did you decide in a cabinet manufacturer? It is exciting. We are excited about the extra countertop space and the sink under a big window. Good luck to you!

we have almost no extra storage/room, so it's great that you do. then your kitchen can be functional without being weighed down by non-essential stuff.

we changed our layout again, but i think it's good now. it's an L with a line. we now have four drawer stacks: 33, 24, and two 18's.

it's hard to decide between 3 and 4 drawers, isn't it? you know what you have, but maybe there will be better ways to organize it. you don't really know until you start using the new kitchen, it seems like.

we will do a 3- and a 4-drawer with the two 18" stacks. probably we'll do a 2-drawer with the 24" and 33", with one of those shallow interior drawers in the tops. i think a 3-drawer would be better for one or the other, but it's that dang matchy-matchy thing, since they flank the range!

anyway, did you meet with your kd yet? what did she say about the corner cabs? keep us posted. :)

that nice corner to the rt of your sink appears to me the big prep and cooking set up zone. I would go ahead and move the range over a bit more to maximize this. You would have 18 in or so remaining to the rt of range-but that isn't where you will cook that much anyway. It could still be coffee pot/ toaster/etc. good for what you have:look into panels around frig-maybe recess back into studs...a semi flush thing might be possible...With nice cabs, hdwe and counters it will be good to go-the windows will give you light which is a feature itself.
