jencox - I can't answer your question and most postings here are more technical in nature. Try reposting on the Home Decoration forum. Some talented poster there will assist, I'm sure. A photo might help too. BTW, I understand the DH not wanting to trim the doors again. Mine hates trim but I don't mind doing it so long as he does the rolling. Between us we make one competent painter! In our home I used colors from the same SW card in the Entry, LR, DR stairway and halls to avoid day/night color conflicts like you are experiencing. I'm brand new and definitely an amateur, but I would probably stay with a more neutral color, as you suggested. My entrance is somewhat similar in style and floor coloring. We used a Lowes color (back before we knew that there was a SW nearby us) It's called Cream in my Coffee and looks like it says. So I would say stay with a lighter more neutral color. But you don't *have* to I don't think. Other people here could give you much better guidance than mine though, I'm sure! You could try Sherwin Williams coloring guide on their website to see what you like or to get an approximate idea anyway. Good luck!

Great ideas. I do like the idea of the wall niche. Thanks for posting the site. DH is going to love this. We just finished ripping down wallpaper and repainting the foyer. He'll be happy to know I now want him to cut a hole in the wall. I am having trouble posting pictures. Something is wrong with the port on my camera. When DH gets home I will see if he can get it to work.

Yours is one house that can support even the most outrageously "out there" color on the front door and still look good, given the uniform charcoal color. A stain (if you buy a new door to put it on) would be too tame. Shutters would improve its appearance in its present state, but if it were mine, I would be more likely to try to use plantings to soften and fill the gaps. It also might benefit from a much larger and more decorative light next to the door.
