Cold and raining--soup weather

Gotta get the ingredients for some beef soup tomorrow. I found who knows what left over beef in the freezer to use, I have some onion, but I need other veggies too. Vegetable beef soup sounds good to me. Supposed to rain tomorrow too.

I've been craving a bowl of New England clam chowder!
Tomorrow and next week going up into the 60's so I better think SALADS!

Yes, I think soup is one of the best parts of winter. Soup and firewood. And down comforters.

CAthy, I'm happy as long as the tank heater is keeping up, I HATE chopping ice from the tank. Actually, chopping it isn't the bad part, it's dipping the ice chunks out with a hay fork, I always get wet, and it's cold. Ugh. Hate that..... Wind chill factors of 20 to 30 below zero ought to tell me, I've made a wooden cover for the stock tank with a hole just big enough for the animals to put their heads through, I'm hoping it helps, at least enough to keep the tank unfrozen. We set a bale this afternoon, a big round bale will last 3-4 days, so hopefully it'll last until Wednesday morning, when it breaks a little and will be back up to a high of 17, and no below zero temps. I can do everything else manually, but the tractor doesn't always want to start when it's that cold and I need the tractor to move those big bales. As for school, they will probably not have school Monday or Tuesday, we have so many rural students that ride busses and it's just not safe to have small children out in that weather. When it hits zero they are not allowed to go outside for recess and when it's colder, they eventually give up and close school. Annie

The trees are brilliant here. It had continued to be beautifully warm and dry until last week, when overnights dipped into the mid 40s (which I enjoyed despite watching my front lawn turn brown, and dreading the water bill from keeping my important yard plantings alive - we had less than 1/4" of rain all last month, 2-3 weeks without rain at the end of August too, and no significant rain until the cold front came through last Saturday.) Now with the typical end of October chilly and damp weather, it feels even colder than it did last week. I see the beautiful colors, feel the October weather, see all of the neighbors fall and Halloween decorations, look at the calendar to see it is mid-October - but deep inside I still seem to think it should be mid-August.

Attic Insulation OK in Cold Weather?

My advice - this actually happened last year: unless it absolutely can’t wait until March or later… cancel and wait. We had a squirrel issue and the contractor took all of the insulation from our attic (Jan 15, 2023) and due to a misunderstanding it was over a week between removal and our scramble to find someone to put new insulation in. It did cause a crack in our garage drywall although no issues inside. We live in IL so strongly recommend waiting. The real issue was the house having a blasting furnace for a full week with under 10 degree temps. Frankly it wasn’t warm the entire time.

I doubt that Charles, because there's time Joanne has too much heat as well as times when it's not enough. Still waiting for the new thermostats. For the past few days the two units have been mostly running at 2 degrees over setpoint with the occasional too-little heat. Temps outside warmish for this time of year. To me it points to a sensor related issue. Whether this is by design is hard to say (we're discussing this in a forum board where some read and some don't -- you know who you are). Joanne, I know you said previously that they added refrigerant to the system and so if they did that (depending on how, what and why?) As temperature increases outdoors an over charge (even a few ounces) can put some monkey's with wrenches inside the unit. It's a critically charged machine. (laymen's terms it isn't going to work if the refrigerant charge is wrong on a critically charged machine.) So other times when it's colder points to a sensor related problem, warmer something else happens -- that may or may not be refrigerant charge related? The way to determine is to remove all refrigerant and weight it, then put back what is needed by weight. I mention this because you said they have used heads that they've replaced. If they do not understand refrigerant charge requirements for critically charged machines, they will probably never fix it. Sizing related issues? the unit would just short cycle if too big OR too small run all the time with no off cycle and not enough heat when colder out. (This particular unit capable down to 5F) If you have a room that requires exactly 17,000 BTU of heat maybe they make heads for 15,000 BTU or 18,000 BTU --- Pick one, either one will be either undersized or over sized. Why the sizing game or the blame thereof isn't quite what you think it is. The closer you look at sizing, the more it becomes apparent the unit isn't really "properly sized".

Wel..we did get our rain today...and plenty of it! I made a pot of beef stew today...it was perfect for a rainy day!

I love a good soup day! And when you lose power and you have lots of soup or stew, it's perfect for re-heating on the wood stove and you can keep adding stuff to it every night to stretch it out.

I make a regular batch of soup, then freeze the left overs in individual containers. Really great to be able to grab a bowl when I want it. Of course, they are never marked, so it's a surprise lunch!

Here's a soup recipe that I've been making this winter It is SO GOOD. I shared it with all our family members and they have all been making it and raving about it.

UNSTUFFED PEPPER SOUP
* 1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef
* 3 large green peppers, chopped
* 1 large onion, chopped
* 2 (14 ounce) cans beef broth
* 2 (10 ounce) cans tomato soup, undiluted
* 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes, undrained
* 1 (4 ounce) can mushroom pieces, drained (I haven't used mushrooms yet, I didn't have any both times I made it)
* 1 1/2 cups cooked rice

Directions
1. In a dutch oven or large saucepan, cook beef, peppers, and onions over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain.
2. Stir in the broth, soup, tomatoes, and mushrooms.
3. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 30-40 minutes, stirring occasionally.
4. Add the rice, heat through and serve.

I made pasta e fagioli last night. It sure is soup weather...but then again, I could eat soup every day ;o)

That's funny about NE clam chowder.. I was just thinking I hadn't made that in a long time.

I recently made a spicy squash soup that was a big hit. It was creamy and zippy and I took that sort of.. small super-thin pumpernickel bread and cut/baked small star croutons to throw in. Sounds like a lot of work but it wasn't and it was great. Thankfully I had some left over!

I am definitely making note of that unstuffed pepper soup. That sounds really good.
