The neurosurgeon's office called with a surgery date for me. It's going to be next Friday! That took me by surprise, because I didn't think it would be so soon. Pre-op is on Wednesday. I'm a little nervous, but it will be good to get this over with. The whole thing feels surreal.

Sylvia, I'm so glad you don't have to wait very long for treatment! You will be in very good hands at Mayo. The people in Minneapolis and the entire area were so friendly when we visited a few times. My son lived there approx 1990-95. The drawback is indeed the cold. But I was amazed at how warm we were indoors, no matter what building we were in. Even that huge Mall of America was right toasty! I found that I was able to stay warm outdoors as long as the skin was covered. My eyes were the only thing bare, and I wore glasses a lot too. I just wrapped that scarf around my neck, face and ears, and always had a hat on outside, and like Jan said, you must wear gloves. A warm hat or boggin is very important, because so much body heat is lost through the head. You also need more calories in cold weather, takes more to keep the body warm. Oh and they have good food too. Seems like potatoes comes with every dish you order lol ... an entire plate of them besides your entree at most places. I'm so glad your family can be with you. Maybe y'all can enjoy the city a bit before your surgery. The Nicollet Mall area has every kind of restaurant you can imagine, it's right downtown, and fun to walk around there if weather permits. Their city bus system is very good too. We rode it over to St. Paul Mall of America, and when the regular commuters were sitting in traffic, the buses have their own lanes, and just keep going, and they let you out right in the front. That's helpful because you can only imagine how big their parking lot would have to be! For such a large city, it's very clean too. I feel all the love and prayers going out for you too! It's like a big warm energy in my heart! And on the 12th, you will be on a lot of peoples' minds, and prayers will be constant that day! The power of prayer will multiply more times than we could ever really know. Keep up the good, positive spirit, because there will be trying days, but I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. You are a strong and beautiful woman, and there will be better days ahead! I hope that there's some way your family can go online, or call one of us at the forum so they can let us know how your surgery goes. If not, we'll just wait patiently until you can get word to us. Your family will be in our prayers too, love and best wishes to each one of you. We'll miss you while your gone, Sylvia, so hurry back as soon as you can after your surgery! Beautiful sentiments New Dawn! Thank you so much. Rose, thanks for sharing the story & for your continued positive thoughts. Peggy is home! She was discharged yesterday afternoon, got home around 4:00. She is very, very happy to be in her own house again. We visited Saturday, Sunday, & Monday. Monday's visit was at her house. When we arrived, a guy was just finishing setting up an oxygen tank for her, making sure she had plenty of length to her tube so she could walk the distance of most of the first floor. Shortly after the guy left, her dh & my dh went out to get a prescription filled and picked up a few groceries. I was glad that we were there so Peggy wasn't alone right away when her dh went out to the store. Don't know how long she'll be on oxygen, but the doc is saying a week or two right now. I'm sure they'll be playing it by ear. I think she is most concerned about her lung. With time I truly believe she will adapt to this though. Our niece & her dh will be over to bring Peggy dinner tonight. They both cook very well, and my nephew loves to cook. He was thinking days ago about all the things he wants to fix for them. Tonight will be enchiladas. I told him he must bake some of his famous lemon squares for them at some point. They are out of this world! The home care nurse, Nan, will be over today too, & Peggy's dh be home, so she will be well-attended to today. Recovery is off to a good start.

Thank you again everyone and thank you for the health tips on diabetes and the statins. Kiwi, my sister Marjorie can't take any statin drugs because of the muscle pains and swelling she experienced so she will watch Paul closely and ask him questions. Health Canada wants everyone who is diabetic now to be on a statin drug such as Lipitor which is why Paul was prescribed it. His cholesterol levels are good right now. Kiwi, I am sorry your Mom had so many side effects from the drug. Just for anyone who doesn't know in Canada our blood sugar measurements are different than in the US so blood sugar readings between 4 and 7 are considered in the normal range. Paul doesn't suffer from mental illness and isn't really depressed. He is great at handling stress and let me tell you he and his children have seen mental illness at its worse (his ex wife now deceased). Paul is actually handling his diagnosis better than I am. LOL Paul is on his way home from the Toronto area right now. He went to see his daughter and to pick up a china cabinet for himself and 8 banana boxes filled with stuff for me from my cousin who is moving. I am excited to see what she is sending me. Paul was happy to tell me his blood sugar level went down to 8 with the pills and he only had to get up to go to the bathroom once during the night. He said that is the best part, not being thirsty and not having to go to the bathroom all the time. LOL Paul should be meeting with the dietician one day this week and also the diabetic educator. His surgery is outpatient but the educator will probably come to see him while he is in the hospital. I just want him to be aware too that his blood sugar can drop and he needs to have something on hand or in his car to elevate his blood sugar if he has a reaction. My best friend has been a diabetic all her life and I have met with the diabetic educator because of my Mom so I am quite familiar with the disease. My Dad had type 2 diabetes as well. My blood sugar levels have always been on the low side. I think Paul is getting fed up with me bombarding him with information LOL so I will ease up a bit. He is a big boy. LOL Thank you again. Anne

When I was diagnosed with my brain tumor, my surgery was scheduled 5 days later. I was glad for the short amount of time because if it was any longer I would have gone crazy stressing about it. I was so busy with pre-op stuff and getting my house clean/organized that I didn't have time to think about it until the morning of.

I continue to send healing thoughts and prayers your way.

Thank you everyone. If the surgery goes well, I will be home in two days. Sometimes people go home after one day, but that seems unbelievable for a 4 hour brain surgery. It would be nice to be able to go home so early though. I'm going to see if my daughter will post for me...

My very best to you, Susan. I, too, would be glad to have it so quickly so that it wouldn't weigh on my mind. Apprehensive, yes, but glad to get it done. You'll do great!

Any idea how long you'll be in the hospital after the surgery?

Happy to hear that you are being operated on this Friday. I also live in Ontario and I did note the original surgery date of approx 2 months time. I appreciate our health care system but wait times for something such as you are experiencing can be way too long. I know you will be happy to come home, but these days they are releasing people way too soon from the hospital. My husband had major eye surgery and was released an hour afterwards and then had to be back for a follow-up at 6:00 a.m. the next day. His head had to be kept in a special position etc. or game over. My optometrist told me that no way should anyone having that surgery be sent home same day - and have to go back - too dangerous. So if they want to keep you - stay! Best of luck.

As others have said, I am glad you don't have to wait a long time. Getting out so early might be hard, but just remember that you are still post-op, even if you are home. Give yourself plenty of time to rest and gain strength. It's always surprising how much strength you lose after any kind of procedure.

I appreciate all of your warm and thoughtful responses. I actually had a good day. I am off work tomorrow, and this was previously scheduled. I might not work at all next week, I haven't decided yet. Anyway, my work friends got together today when I was busy, and they gave me a musical card, two plants, flowers, scented soap and a candle, all wrapped and with bows! I was overwhelmed- my work peeps mean a lot to me, but I did not expect this. This world is full of nice, thoughtful people.

susan, you're on the road to recovery! thank you for having your dd post if she can...know we'll be sending those good thought and prayers the entire time!

last week spoke to friend's ds (at dgd's party) said his mom was going great. she had some kind of follow-up chemo, but while tired, no hair loss, ect...i guess they use it to reduce any part of tumor they might not have removed, although benign? (it was her second surgery)

We'll be waiting to 'hear all about it' in a little over one week. I'm pleased they got moving faster on this. Waiting is hard on a patient.
