Cancer Surgery Date is set

I will be going for my consultation at Mayo on Monday

Feb 9, they will run more tests 10th and 11th and the surgery will be on the 12th.

Everyone I have dealt with at Mayo is awesome.

I feel confident that our Lord will take care of me and quite honestly I can feel prayers coming my way.

I have never ever been in such cold weather the other day it was 2 degrees, Wow that is cold.

I am going to be in the hospital, but I worry about my DH. The good thing is that we got a hotel right across the street from St. Mary's Hospital where they will be doing surgery.

My son and daughter will be there too.

Thank you all for your prayers, say a special one on the 12th for me.

Sylvia~ You have a great attitude, that's a precious thing no matter what situation we find ourselves in.
I'm glad to hear your family will be there with you. You will have someone let us know how things are going, won't you?

We're all here for support, Lizalily! You'll be in my prayers... actually, everyone here already is! I always ask for peace and good health for all of my friends... I think everyone already covered the fact that your bulbs will be waiting for you, and to listen to your physical therapist and doctors, and you'll feel much better when it's over... I would only add that I'll be thinking of you when you're having your surgery, and praying for your swift recovery... And I would definitely see if I could get anyone's spent bulbs that they might otherwise throw away... it's like getting free flowers for next year!

I'm taking it slow and being a good patient, listening to my body. I can't do everything that I used to yet, but it's way better than using that cane, walker and wheelchair that are sitting in the corner! I've taken up painting old furniture and am having a blast! I've learned how to make chalk paint and am creating my own wax stains and paint colors with tints and white paint, so fun! So far I've painted an old childs' ladder back chair -yellow, an old oak mirror, silver and gold, and my bathroom vanity, to match the mirror. I've also painted my heavy wooden microwave cabinet, white, for my daughter. I've started stripping an oak cedar chest in the garage. I also found 2 french country coffee tables for $20! I plan to paint them too. I'm also slowly clearing out my gardens from last years' dead grass. The soil is so deep and soft from all the years' of compost and horse manure. Little by little. My gardens went to weeds last year, but hopefully, by summer time, they will be beautiful again! Margaret, you are in my prayers for a full recovery. Keep smiling and praising God for how far you've come and you'll get there! I am so aware of His healing hand on me, I just marvel in His mercy and love!

First, I want to tell you to calm down.......... I know that this is scary. Twice in the last few years my mammogram has shown something abnormal. My first thought was that the machine had malfunctioned (I wanted to think the best). When I was told that there was actually something abnormal there, I felt like someone had socked me in the stomach. Both times though, it turned out NOT to be cancer. But before I knew for sure I was convinced that it was. We always think the worst. The first was "Atypical Ductal Hyperplasia". Fancy name for "cells reproducing much faster than they are supposed to". Doc told me that they consider it a precursor to cancer and best to have it removed, so it is GONE. The second time I wasn't as scared as the first time and I don't even remember what they called it, but after biopsy they determined that nothing more needed to be done and I would be fine. And I want to tell you that there are NO foolish questions. Nothing should be more important to you than YOU and you have the right to ask all the questions you want and keep asking them until you understand the answers. As for how long it takes to return to work, there is going to be a big variance there, depending on how invasive the surgery is. For my surgery, which would have been the same whether or not it had been cancer, I only missed two days of work. Obviously someone having a double mastectomy is going to take much longer. I did a search online and there are lots of websites that can give you information. I'm not posting any of these for you though, because each seemed to have only tidbits that might fit your situation. Google - "breast cancer" + surgery + "return to work" for one such search. Do remember to use the quotation marks, this will narrow your search to make it more relavent. Bottom line, do not let your imagination get away from you before you know just what you are dealing with. I will be keeping you in my thoughts. You can get through this and stay sane.

I have had skin cancer in three places on my face. One Squamous Cell on my forehead, and two Basal Cell -- one on the side of my nose, and the other near the inside corner of my right eye. That one was so close to the tear duct that my dermatologist (who is consistently named one of the two Top Docs in dermatology) sent me to a Mohs specialist. If you know where to look, and look closely, you can see an itty bitty scar on my forehead and an itty bitty scar on the side of my nose. But you cannot tell at all where the Mohs surgery was done near my eye. A very basic explanation of the difference between "regular" surgery and Mohs surgery is that with the regular surgery, the doctor will remove a chunk of skin surrounding the area where the mole (or "bump") was removed. Then the tissue will be sent to a lab for analysis. If an edge of that chunk has any cancerous cells, you have to go back again to have another chunk removed. And, they won't know exactly where on the original chunk the cancer cells were, so an even larger area will be excised to try to make sure they got it all. With Mohs surgery, a very thin section of skin is removed. That section is then cut into quarters, and each quarter is given a different color. Those quarters are examined, and if any of them have cancerous cells, the doctor will remove another thin layer, but only from the section(s) that still are affected. They know exactly which areas to go back to because of how the sections are coded. Yes, it can take all day, but that's because once a sample is excised, you go back out to the waiting room while the tissue is prepared and examined. The "waiting part" takes about an hour or so. If they need to go back for more, you are taken back to the procedure room again, and then back out to the waiting room. As soon as you get an "all clear," you can leave. And the waiting room where I had my Mohs surgery had extremely comfortable recliners to rest (nap) in. And this was years before I had a Kindle, so I brought some knitting with me. I, too, go for a fully body skin check each year. Thankfully, nothing further has been found.

It does get very cold in MN. So you need layers & a very warm coat or long jacket. Forget a dress, wear pants & bobby socks with boots if you can get some lined ones. Warm gloves are a must. May need 2 pair one over the other. A warm soft scarf for around your head & to hold over your face as it can be very "biting" & you don't want to get sick. Mn. in winter is no place for nylons &little flats, flip flops, or light canvas shoes you'd get frostbite!!! It gets way below freezing & then with windchill it is even colder. Down or heavy lined-plush acrylic lined coat. Scarf should be about 15 in. wide & 6 ft long so you can wrap it around fleece or soft wool or acrylic. DH should have heavy gloves & hat or cap that can pull over ears, dress shoes & thin socks don't work, need stuff more suited to skiing. Sweatshirts, sweaters, fleece, long johns, think you get the idea.Protect your heads, fingers, toes ! Leave nice jewelry & watches etc at home, take cheap stuff. You want to be warm & comfortable, not worrying about what happened to stuff. Take a little something from home, pic of the kids & grandkids to put in your room & notepad & pencil,lipchap stick,mints of some kind. Just think that by Valentine's day you should be feeling much better with surgery out of way & hoping & praying you & your family have a safe & good trip with a return trip in not too distant future. nana ... That is such good news to be processed in to Mayo so quickly!!! God is watching over you!!! I live about 135 miles from Rochester ... and it is a miracleous place! I have been to Rochester a few times for members of our family. They will take GOOD CARE of you there. I am glad your family is across the street ... and, also, there are lots of stores, restaurants "inside" where your family can walk...so they won't have to walk far in the cold!

Yes, it is cold in MN. ... lots like here in Iowa. You will all be just fine! Like sunnyca says, "layers" of clothes, hats & gloves...and, hopefully, we will have some warmer days by then (30's at least!)

Sylvia, I'm so glad you don't have to wait very long for treatment! You will be in very good hands at Mayo. The people in Minneapolis and the entire area were so friendly when we visited a few times. My son lived there approx 1990-95.

The drawback is indeed the cold. But I was amazed at how warm we were indoors, no matter what building we were in. Even that huge Mall of America was right toasty! I found that I was able to stay warm outdoors as long as the skin was covered. My eyes were the only thing bare, and I wore glasses a lot too. I just wrapped that scarf around my neck, face and ears, and always had a hat on outside, and like Jan said, you must wear gloves. A warm hat or boggin is very important, because so much body heat is lost through the head.

You also need more calories in cold weather, takes more to keep the body warm. Oh and they have good food too. Seems like potatoes comes with every dish you order lol ... an entire plate of them besides your entree at most places.

I'm so glad your family can be with you. Maybe y'all can enjoy the city a bit before your surgery. The Nicollet Mall area has every kind of restaurant you can imagine, it's right downtown, and fun to walk around there if weather permits. Their city bus system is very good too. We rode it over to St. Paul Mall of America, and when the regular commuters were sitting in traffic, the buses have their own lanes, and just keep going, and they let you out right in the front. That's helpful because you can only imagine how big their parking lot would have to be! For such a large city, it's very clean too.

I feel all the love and prayers going out for you too! It's like a big warm energy in my heart! And on the 12th, you will be on a lot of peoples' minds, and prayers will be constant that day! The power of prayer will multiply more times than we could ever really know. Keep up the good, positive spirit, because there will be trying days, but I'm not telling you anything you don't already know. You are a strong and beautiful woman, and there will be better days ahead!

I hope that there's some way your family can go online, or call one of us at the forum so they can let us know how your surgery goes. If not, we'll just wait patiently until you can get word to us. Your family will be in our prayers too, love and best wishes to each one of you. We'll miss you while your gone, Sylvia, so hurry back as soon as you can after your surgery! You are off to a great start girlfriend! Mayo is one of the best medical centers in, not just the U.S., but in the entire WORLD! If anyone can lick this strange tumor you got, it's them! I think our warm Midwest charm will more than make up for the cold weather and the wonderful food will warm your belly and your heart. My prayers will be flying across Wisconsin and half of Minnesota to you!
