That sounds satisfyingly weird! Here's another coincidence: Your post made me wander off to the kitchen and eat half a banana. :-)

Paula...this is not weird but funny...we have a teddy Bear who's is called "Bingo"...it is a talking bear. You stick your hand in the back and make his mouth move. When you pinch his mouth shut it activates the talking.

My daughter who was in her late 20s at the time was holding it making it talk to one of the kids.

The bear says little short verses.

This time he said "will you scratch my tummy"

Criss reached down and scratched his tummy...

Then he said..."A little lower please"

So she reached down a little lower...

Which was in a "touchy" area...

She got a strange look on her face and said..."I NOT scratching you there..."as if she were really answering him.

We all just about died laughing...!!!!

I still have Bingo and he still talks. But That combination of phrases hasn't come up again.

My sister got a Chatty Cathy doll when she was ten and she's now 56. The doll stopped talking a year after she got it so she's always had it in her home sitting at a little childrens desk. One night she was home alone and she got the fright of her life. She was walking up stairs and the doll started talking!!!! Forty two years of silence haha. It never talked again. Guess she just had to let it out. lol

That's kinda freaky, Paula! I don't have a clue what Elmo says. lol

Paula, that is a real funny coincident. My daughter had a Mrs Beasley doll from the old TV show, Family Affair back in the 60's. You pulled a string on the doll's back and she would 'say' random phrases. A neighbor was over and I was showing her the doll. She pulled the string and Mrs Beasley said, "If you had three wishes, what would they be?" My nieghbor, Jan, said "Oh, I guess to lose 5 lbs, to lose 10 lbs, to lose 15 lbs." Jan then pulled the string and the doll said, "My your getting to be a big girl aren't you?" The look on Jan's face was priceless. She shoved the doll back to me saying "Smart a$$ doll!"

That is weird Paula! And everyone elses is ...weird and creepy. My story....
I had a large, musical birthday candle in my kitchen drawer, lost it in the back of the drawer to be truthful. Every once in a while I would hear a muffled, eerily slow and drawn out birthday song coming from the kitchen. It was un-nerving to say the least. I finally found that darned thing and burned it up. Why it came on by itself, I'll never know.

Oooh, freaky!

DD had a doll that would make a kiss noise when you brought it up to your cheek. There was a light sensor somewhere in the face of the doll that made it work.

Sometimes the doll would be sitting there, all alone, nothing to cast a shadow, and it would suddenly turn on "Muah! I love you". Finally DH and I got sick of the creepy thing and gave it away to charity.

I wonder if that is bad, foisting a spooky doll off on somebody less fortunate?

I have enjoyed this thread. Reminds me of the time I posted about my battery operated cat that started talking on it's own and talked for hours. I think now the batter is dead. I need to check it out I guess.

That is quite a coincidence that Elmo said that right at that moment. Do you have the Elmo in the link below? This is a 200 phrase talking Elmo and the description says he does talk about bananas. lol IF this is the one you have, I'd quit stepping on him cause he sells for over $100.!

What strange coincidents! I have one too. Many years ago my sister gave our son a set of cars that included firetrucks and police cars. They were battery operated and would "speak" when a button was pushed. He eventually out grew it and it was put in an "old toys" box in the basement. One night many years later DH and I both woke up thinking we heard far away voices somewhere in the house. We thought at first that it was the kids, but they were sound asleep. As we went downstairs we realized that it was coming from the basement, and that it sounded mechanical. It was one of the cars in the toy box that kept repeating "emergency...emergency, over and over. We found it and turned it off. DH said he had moved that box a couple of days earlier, and thought he must have jostled it and somehow something had settled and pushed the button. We were amazed that the battery still worked so many years later. We went back to bed, but after a while DH got up again saying something didn't smell right. He went back down to the basement, and quickly came back up, saying we needed to get the kids out to the car. (it was winter) He said the smell was stronger in the basement and might be something wrong with the furnace. We had not noticed that when we were down there earlier. We got everyone out, and woke the neighbors to call the fire department. No cellphones back then. They found that the level of carbon monoxide was very high! This was before carbon monoxide detectors were common. DH had turned off the furnace when he went down there, and they opened all the windows in the house to air it out.
The next morning we discovered that the furnace chimney was blocked by a big bird that had fallen in. The fire people said that often happens when birds sit there to warm themselves and then pass out from the fumes. Having screened caps on chimneys is very important! Anyway...if that toy hadn't activated itself and woken us up......

I have to add another story...

My girls used to have a Barbie car that two Barbies could ride in. It was battery operated.

Whenever it took a notion it would start up and drive around the house.

We would make sure it was turned off at night, but that didn't help.

My girls were afraid of it. They thought it was possessed.

So we got rid of it.

Dances I hope it didn't get passed along to the same family that got kissing doll...lol

Lydia, those 3rd party toy sellers try to get some ridiculous prices on Amazon. That looks like the same Elmo but ours is probably only worth the $1.97 I paid for it in Goodwill. Tonight Dan picked up a puppy. I looked at Elmo and he stayed quiet. I squeezed his hand and he sang Elmo's song. If he had mentioned something about a puppy, he would have been out with the trash tomorrow.

These are some great stories. Most of the time I think dying batteries cause the weirdness in toys but I also think that they are a good vehicle for wandering 'ghost' energy. Dying batteries can't explain it all.
