Weird coincidence?

Dan usually grabs a plush toy off the pile on his way to bed. Tonight he grabbed this stuffed banana that Nick won as a prize at school last year. Right at the moment he picked it up, exactly, this talking Elmo said 'Did you know that bananas grow on trees?' The Elmo was on the floor so one of us probably stepped on it but I don't ever recall hearing any of his Elmos ever say that before.

Hi Pam: I've been building these machines since 1990, although I have called it quits years ago, except for family and close friends. I have a collection of 'obsolete' motherboards starting with the 8088 and the 8086 and so on. This is my process of ilimination and has no concern for your own abilities for analysis it's just the way it would have to be worded/questioned. If you want some help, go through these steps and send me an email. What sounds do you have? If no sound at all, make sure there is not an on off power switch on the back of your power supply box. Make sure it's on and all plugs are tightly in and your power bar is also switched on. If you hear the power supply box but not any of the fans, try switching out your memory cards, they (or one)may be what burned out. If you hear your fans as well, listen for one beep, if you hear it, all is well with your hardware and something is wrong with your operating system bootup. Make sure you have no floppy disc of cdrom in your drawers. Most systems' bios' are set to have at least one of these to boot up first, in case of the need. They must be empty when you boot up normally everytime, if they are set up to check for a bootup disk first. If your motherboard is fried you will not get anything but the powersupply fan. Although if your second memory slot (and maybe some other rare places) is fried keep memory cards out of it - check the teeth on the memory card to. If it's your first slot that's burned (I have a gigabyte board that burned this one out), your motherboard is done in. While your in there, clean it out - those viscious little dust bunny are wickeder than you think. Crossing currents where they don't belong. Make sure it's unplugged before working in a machine. Also tighten all connections/cables and you'll likelier to have a smoother and faster machine than you had - supposing we can get it working. You can email me and let me know where you're at with it. Your lucky you have a second machine. I always keep an old Win98 around, eccential for internet info for some repairs or analysis. Which environment do you have? Windows XP? It would help to know if you have a P2 or newer as well. 1 ghz or better. If so press F8 on boot up to try to get to safe mode. Once in, you can use system restore back to a prior date. Virus's can remove the boot sector (genb and genp are older virus' that did this) but that doesn't mean your machine can't be rebuilt. I'm hoping to avoid the process of booting up from another disk as that's a whole new ball game. It's pretty much a call to rebuild your software environment which will scrub out all your prior data. But it is a whole lot easier to rebuild than in the old days as long as you have all original disks. Keep 'em clean people, they'll purr for you - Sandy

Love these...Here's mine, from yesterday in fact! I was cleaning out the kids rooms. My older daughter had a "I'm a Big Sister" book that was too young for her and was going to toss it out. Then, I thought, do I know anyone that is pregnant, in case someone else could use it? But no one came to mind. That night I got an email from a friend that she is pregnant (been trying for a long time) and has a 3 year old daughter, so the book would be a perfect fit!! I emailed her my congratulations and told her the story! iammadeofdreams...ohhh, your story gave me chills, but I also think it was your dads way of saying he's okay!

We traveled to Mexico City a number of years ago with friends. I was really looking forward to the trip and wanted to get out of town as soon as possible so we booked a red eye out of San Diego. At the very last minute our friends called to say they had to change to the next flight out so we did too. The red eye crashed upon landing at the Mexico City airport. We were the next flight in and saw a horrible sight and already had people on our plane destined to claim their relatives. Just found this new piece on the crash: 31 October 1979; Western Airlines DC10-10; Mexico City, Mexico: The crew inadvertently landed on a closed runway parallel to the active runway. The aircraft struck a large vehicle and crashed. 63 of the 77 passengers and 9 of the 11 crew were killed. Similar thing happened on a trip to Paris when I was 24. My charter flight was cancelled at the very last minute so I had to fly into another city and take the train to Paris. The airport in Paris came under attack by the SLA, IRA or some militant group. When my mom wanted a new vehicle, I said I wanted my parents to be driving safe ones. And SUV's were so in. I researched at the library and read the consumer reports and wrote it all down to read and check over and then my dad and I went car looking for her and she wanted a RAV but we looked at it and said ugh too small and plus way too high for our dogs to jump in and out of safely. Then we tried the Honda CRV and I went this is the car for her, it drives like a car and has all the luxuries that she is used too. she even still had a choice between DVD or Cassette, she said cassette but never used it. What a huge mistake that was. Then dad I pushed as his station wagon car he had for years was getting dangerous driving it, unsafe and I said you need to buy one too. WE checked the SUV Subaru Forester which was perfect for him, both his and mom's were good for our long windy driveway and snow too. And dad's is number one safety vehicle. They still have them and great vehicles for both of them. Safe too. I went looking at what was out there and got consumer reports to look at hatchback cars and good on gas for myself. And my friend had gotten a Toyota Matrix and I loved it tons and tons. And so when dad and I went looking there was only two to testdrive, Matrix and Fit and it was the Matrix hands down. I love it and when you upgrade you get the luxuries which I wanted so bad, air-conditioning as we have gotten hot summers here and there and I cna't handle heat at all. And power windows, no more killing myself to reach over to passenger side to roll down the window or roll up. Side mirrors too drove me crazy if they were out of whack while driving and can't do anyting about it until you can stop and fix it. Also automatic, I wanted that for quite awhile as I was finding grear shifts were not my thing as I went along. I find that you check the consumer auto reports and also the internet. See what comments others say, ask people if you know they have bought a car that you are interested in or you like it because of them buying one. Also take your time to test drive and tell them you want to go on highway, you want to try this and that. And make sure the seat feels good when driving. Is it easy to manuever and the curves, how does it handle on them. corners, backing up. Also how fast does it go, small cars that is important to be able to zip out on the roads instead of sitting there forever and ever. Go back and test drive it again and then ask questions that you forget in the excitement of it. How about trade in cars? Do they take trade ins? What about colours, what do they have on the lot? Can you wait for the colour you want? Or take whatever is there? Can you make a deal on things thrown in, cut down on price? Are you good at doing that? And getting it? Find out if you have winter snow in your area how certain vehicles run during those times. My parents got me a pony hyundai as it was cheap, ( I Paid them back for it) and it was the worst car for winter, couldn't make it up the hills and we live with hills and that driveway that is long and windy. I had to have the neigbhours push my up the road we lived on and pushed me off the road, embarrasing that was. I hated that car with a passion and stuck with it for 10 years. This Matrix is zippy, has the luxuries with the upgrade and automatic and hatchback. It is everything I want. Plus they also had one last car with the colour I wanted, the nice blue, not navy blue. I loved too that I got the intermittent wipers, and back wiper and even a radio. With the Nissan Sentra, got none of that, not even a light for the trunk to see what was in it. And radio, no way would they put one in it for me. Said they do not do that. I couldn't believe it. so, had to go to this place and check them out and then go back and kill time while they put it in for me. so, those things are worthy finding out about. And also they give you a rental car to drive when you drop off your car. And with health issues, they are giving me plus I live quite a ways an extra day with the rental car so I drop off my car and then pick it up the next morning. Works for me much better. So, find out those things too ahead of time. Maintenance is huge in taking it in when you are supposed too, expensive but in the long run you have the car for tons of years running for you. Also the dealer, do you like it? Find out if people have had problems. I did with Nissan and took my car there only once for maintence, I was stuck all day because they told us that a truck blocked our cars plus too late in washing them. I never took it back there, took it to this good garage close to where I lived and got way better work there. So, find out and check about that. If you have to leave the car for a full day or so, then find out about rental car they give you and if they don't, find out how you will get back to work or home and back again. And how long too it will take you. If you don't work, then find out if they are close to malls or somewhere you can go to kill some hours and then go back and pick it up. What are you looking for in a car, carry just yourself, family, pet/s, kids, friends, what? I wanted another hatchback where the back seats came down to be able to buy things and carry them home. I had to borrow my parents or ask my friend who had a van then for help. when you have a two door car you can't put stuff in the back seat, won't fit. And the trunk isn't good even though its big, still won't fit I found. I check it all. Ask questions all the time and still asked even afterwards. It pays too, be happy and content when you get into that drivers seat after signing its yours and away you go and that is what you wanted fully in a car. Otherwise you will not be happy and live iwth a car you hate more and more each day if it doesn't live up to what you want to use it for or weather conditions too. Ask, ask, and read and ask tons more.

Paula...this is not weird but funny...we have a teddy Bear who's is called "Bingo"...it is a talking bear. You stick your hand in the back and make his mouth move. When you pinch his mouth shut it activates the talking.

My daughter who was in her late 20s at the time was holding it making it talk to one of the kids.

The bear says little short verses.

This time he said "will you scratch my tummy"

Criss reached down and scratched his tummy...

Then he said..."A little lower please"

So she reached down a little lower...

Which was in a "touchy" area...

She got a strange look on her face and said..."I NOT scratching you there..."as if she were really answering him.

We all just about died laughing...!!!!

I still have Bingo and he still talks. But That combination of phrases hasn't come up again.

My sister got a Chatty Cathy doll when she was ten and she's now 56. The doll stopped talking a year after she got it so she's always had it in her home sitting at a little childrens desk. One night she was home alone and she got the fright of her life. She was walking up stairs and the doll started talking!!!! Forty two years of silence haha. It never talked again. Guess she just had to let it out. lol

Paula, that is a real funny coincident. My daughter had a Mrs Beasley doll from the old TV show, Family Affair back in the 60's. You pulled a string on the doll's back and she would 'say' random phrases. A neighbor was over and I was showing her the doll. She pulled the string and Mrs Beasley said, "If you had three wishes, what would they be?" My nieghbor, Jan, said "Oh, I guess to lose 5 lbs, to lose 10 lbs, to lose 15 lbs." Jan then pulled the string and the doll said, "My your getting to be a big girl aren't you?" The look on Jan's face was priceless. She shoved the doll back to me saying "Smart a$$ doll!"

That is weird Paula! And everyone elses is ...weird and creepy. My story....
I had a large, musical birthday candle in my kitchen drawer, lost it in the back of the drawer to be truthful. Every once in a while I would hear a muffled, eerily slow and drawn out birthday song coming from the kitchen. It was un-nerving to say the least. I finally found that darned thing and burned it up. Why it came on by itself, I'll never know.

Oooh, freaky!

DD had a doll that would make a kiss noise when you brought it up to your cheek. There was a light sensor somewhere in the face of the doll that made it work.

Sometimes the doll would be sitting there, all alone, nothing to cast a shadow, and it would suddenly turn on "Muah! I love you". Finally DH and I got sick of the creepy thing and gave it away to charity.

I wonder if that is bad, foisting a spooky doll off on somebody less fortunate?

I have enjoyed this thread. Reminds me of the time I posted about my battery operated cat that started talking on it's own and talked for hours. I think now the batter is dead. I need to check it out I guess.

That is quite a coincidence that Elmo said that right at that moment. Do you have the Elmo in the link below? This is a 200 phrase talking Elmo and the description says he does talk about bananas. lol IF this is the one you have, I'd quit stepping on him cause he sells for over $100.!

What strange coincidents! I have one too. Many years ago my sister gave our son a set of cars that included firetrucks and police cars. They were battery operated and would "speak" when a button was pushed. He eventually out grew it and it was put in an "old toys" box in the basement. One night many years later DH and I both woke up thinking we heard far away voices somewhere in the house. We thought at first that it was the kids, but they were sound asleep. As we went downstairs we realized that it was coming from the basement, and that it sounded mechanical. It was one of the cars in the toy box that kept repeating "emergency...emergency, over and over. We found it and turned it off. DH said he had moved that box a couple of days earlier, and thought he must have jostled it and somehow something had settled and pushed the button. We were amazed that the battery still worked so many years later. We went back to bed, but after a while DH got up again saying something didn't smell right. He went back down to the basement, and quickly came back up, saying we needed to get the kids out to the car. (it was winter) He said the smell was stronger in the basement and might be something wrong with the furnace. We had not noticed that when we were down there earlier. We got everyone out, and woke the neighbors to call the fire department. No cellphones back then. They found that the level of carbon monoxide was very high! This was before carbon monoxide detectors were common. DH had turned off the furnace when he went down there, and they opened all the windows in the house to air it out.
The next morning we discovered that the furnace chimney was blocked by a big bird that had fallen in. The fire people said that often happens when birds sit there to warm themselves and then pass out from the fumes. Having screened caps on chimneys is very important! Anyway...if that toy hadn't activated itself and woken us up......

I have to add another story...

My girls used to have a Barbie car that two Barbies could ride in. It was battery operated.

Whenever it took a notion it would start up and drive around the house.

We would make sure it was turned off at night, but that didn't help.

My girls were afraid of it. They thought it was possessed.

So we got rid of it.

Dances I hope it didn't get passed along to the same family that got kissing doll...lol

Lydia, those 3rd party toy sellers try to get some ridiculous prices on Amazon. That looks like the same Elmo but ours is probably only worth the $1.97 I paid for it in Goodwill. Tonight Dan picked up a puppy. I looked at Elmo and he stayed quiet. I squeezed his hand and he sang Elmo's song. If he had mentioned something about a puppy, he would have been out with the trash tomorrow.

These are some great stories. Most of the time I think dying batteries cause the weirdness in toys but I also think that they are a good vehicle for wandering 'ghost' energy. Dying batteries can't explain it all.
