Cliff England's take on Shin persimmon

Coincidentally, Cliff England contacted me today (the letter arrived) because I was a customer who'd purchased Shin from him prior to his only Shin tree being snapped off in an ice storm several years ago. He was asking me for wood from the tree I bought so he could bring back the variety.

He thought it had regrown beneath the graft because persimmons it now produces are astringent. Because of our subsequent interaction on the internet he now believes that it is at least an occasional astringent and did not break below the graft line.

What a weird coincidence that he sent me the letter within a few days of my posting about the variety on Gardenweb and it was about the same issue.

Amazing how all this came to a head in the same week when I purchased the tree back in 04. Maybe the man is psychic.
