where do you store your onion sets?
Comments (3)I have done mine several ways. Remember in the feed store, seed store where ever they lay in the crate they came in till sold. Which around here can be a few months. It is best like Dawn said to keep them in a darker and cooler spot. I don't store in anything plastic myself. If they are fresh like Dixondale's when they arrive and I'm going to be able to plant in 2-4 days I wrap a damp rag around them. Otherwise I just put them in the utility room and have had them be ok a month later. The only onions I ever lost was in a plastic bag with holes in it. So I usually remove plastic from everything now. Just my experience and opinions. Jay...See MoreDo you store potatoes and onions under the sink?
Comments (15)I keep my potatoes and onions in a cupboard in the winter and in the refrigerator in the summer. My mother always said that keeping potatoes in the refrig made them sweet....I find it keeps them from sprouting. I think that directive not to store them together is not true. I do know that storing items that produce etheylene gas as they ripen inhibits the rooting of things like onions....and tulips. So don't try to root tulips in the same area that you are using to store apples or pears....but can't imagine what's the deal about potatoes and onions...I store them together and have for years, as did my mother and grandmother and all the old timers with root cellers.; Linda C...See MoreNo root cellar.... how do you all store onions and potatoes?
Comments (12)I struggle with this, especially since i grow my own onions and potatoes and have LOTS to store for long periods. (I actually built a sort of root cellar area in my basement for bulk storage, but that's a different topic!) In the kitchen area, I've found that storing these things on an outside wall works best, especially in winter when that wall is cooler than the rest. (brick house. bad insulation. no way to improve it. sigh!) So I have a wicker basket on a shelf in my pantry, along the exterior wall, for onions, and another basket in the mudroom closet for potaotes. Basically, you want to find a place that's dark and as cool as possible in your kitchen, and then store these things separately in baskets or perforated bins. A bit of humidity is ideal, but good luck finding such a place in a modern home! Maybe you have a cabinet or closet, though, that's the furthest from a heat source and stays cooler than the others? I'm just dying for a PROPER root cellar.........See MoreWhere do you buy your potatoes for planting?
Comments (5)I got mine from Walmart garden the last time I planted them. They worked just as good as the high dollar ones I got from the seed companies. The varieties are limited but I think they had both of those. They are usually in the bulb display. They also have onion sets I didn't get much in the ground this fall. I spent 3 weeks in the hospital and had major surgery due to pneumonia early November. I'm just getting back to functional, so I haven't been haunting the garden departments, but its worth a looky. I did get some onions in in December when SWIMBO wasn't looking. Sitting around watch sports reruns is just horribly boring. The onion sets (sweets and yellow) came from Ace hardware....See Moremama goose_gw zn6OH
