where do you store your onion sets?

I got me some today. Went to Horn seed, in OKC. Never been there before. Will go there more often. Neat store.

But, how and where do you store your onion sets, till you can plant them?

If they are in a little bag that has air holes in it, or in a paper bag, I've leave them in it and store them in a cool, dark, dry location where the humidity doesn't fluctuate very much. For me, that would be the tornado shelter/root cellar but if I didn't have that, I'd put them in an unheated closet or pantry. The key is to keep them away from fluctuating temperatures/humidity/light. If they are in an airtight bag, I'd take them out so they don't rot.

Mine are sitting atop a rarely used printer, in an airy basket, in a cool corner of the house. Maybe I'll even get them planted out sometime this year.

Hi --I know what you mean. I just bought some sturdy plastic shelves about 6' high and store everything on there--The key is going through at least once a year and organizing everything. I keep small items like epsom salts, etc. in glass jars with lids and everthing else in clear plastic containers so i can see what's in it. You can find these at any big box store. The key is being able to look up at the shelves and see everything without diggin in it. I also stapled chicken wire to the ceiling of my garage out of the walkways and use this to hang stuff with S hooks I bought at the hardware store, or just bent clothes hanger wire will work. I'll second what Pesky wrote -- don't store your onions and potatoes near one another since the gasses they give off as they ripen happen to make the other one ripen faster. Have you ever tried the green plastic vegetable-storage bags? They're usually around $4-5 for a box and each bag can be used over and over (up to 20 times according to the box, but who knows). I was skeptical but now I'm constantly giving them away to friends who visit our house. They are fabulous. You store the fruit or veg inside and the plastic absorbs or neutralizes the gasses, so the items stay much fresher much longer. I'll buy a big bunch of bananas and put half in the bag and leave half out, so they ripen at different rates. Fabulous. Broccoli, green peppers, berries that normally ripen so fast you can hardly get to them, they all ripen much more slowly in the bags. I've never tried the Ziploc brand, only the kind that are sold in a flat box at Walmart or Menards.

Wood stash is around the corner through the mud room in the garage. But we bring it in by the arm loads for the basket. At the old house we needed a log rack and a big stash in the house as the old wood stove was so inefficient. This one is very efficient so the basket works well for us, even though we had designed the space for a larger wood pile....thus why we extended the stone around to the side wall.

I have done mine several ways. Remember in the feed store, seed store where ever they lay in the crate they came in till sold. Which around here can be a few months. It is best like Dawn said to keep them in a darker and cooler spot. I don't store in anything plastic myself. If they are fresh like Dixondale's when they arrive and I'm going to be able to plant in 2-4 days I wrap a damp rag around them. Otherwise I just put them in the utility room and have had them be ok a month later. The only onions I ever lost was in a plastic bag with holes in it. So I usually remove plastic from everything now. Just my experience and opinions. Jay
