Olympic participants uniforms/clothing.. . did YOU notice?

Did you notice this year how toned down the clothing the athletes wore during their competition seemed different? They seemed different than other Olympics to me. Seems like you could always tell the USA skier/boarder and speed skaters with the big bold Red white and blue with stars and stripes. And I could always pick out the Canadians by their garb also. And many other countries.. this year I had a hard time picking them out of a crowd. Like in the Classic Cross country right now.. You used to be able to see what country (on most) was in the lead etc.

Is it just me? lol

No,it is not just you; I agree. I thought the skiing outfit that is light blue with white flakes looked like someone's pajamas.

I loved how the US snowboarders looked like street clothes. Flannels and baggy jeans.

How you feel about winning a particular medal is a relative thing. Going in to a competition expecting to win nothing, you would probably be elated to win Bronze. Going into the same competition expecting to take Gold and ending up with Bronze, that's a completely different feeling. Not that I'm excusing anyone, just that I can completely understand. It's human to feel disappointed when losing a hard fought game. On the other hand, do ya just LOVE Apolo Ohno? He got disqualified in that final round in the 500 meter when he could have won silver. I'm CERTAIN he was disappointed, and he made some remarks regarding the fact that he disagreed with the judges' decision, but he still smiled and said how he had no regrets and felt that he'd had a successful and satisfying time. And speaking of speed skating controversial decisions, the judge who disqualified the Chinese team in the women's relay received threats on his LIFE! How's that for sportsmanship? Ah well, it's over. It was great fun to watch. Congratulations to ALL the winners. Looking forward to the summer games in London in 2012.

Joanie- your best bet would be to go straight to a store that is just for swimsuits. Mostly all of their selections are separates and many lines have bra sizing. Yes they are pricey, but it's my summer splurge. If I'm going to be half naked in public, you bet my suit is going to fit and hold my parts in properly! IMHO spending extra on a couple of well made perfect fitting suits is a no-brainer (considering you take care of them, hand wash etc they can last for years). We have a store in a local mall that is called "everything but the water". Name speaks for itself! Unfortunately, I have no advice for the ones who "fear the fitting room germs". Unfortunately, I am petite and curvy (not overweight, but not ready to wear either) so have to try on everything, and have to get most things tailored. It is a fact of life for me! Thankfully I LOVE "the art" of shopping so have accepted the fact that it takes me some effort to get the look I want. I have many favorite places to shop but most are at least a 30 min+ drive, so usually plan a "shopping day" (not very often with 3 kids!). There are a couple of local boutiques which I love, and although one may think "stuck up" or "pushy" when it comes to boutique shopping, once the salesperson gets to know you and your style, they become like a personal shopper. Plus I get advance notice and first pick on their special sales! My place calls me when they think I might like something that just came in. There is no pressure on me to buy. 9 times out of 10 I just browse and may buy on that 10th visit. I too live on a budget, but make sure I put away for my "happy fund" when that occasional splurge is needed.

We were strong-armed at work for the United Way every year. We weren't forced to donate but we did have to at least fill out our donation card one way or another and each department was closely monitored as to how many responses they got. It was terrible. I went to the public library and easily found out how much the local (Minneapolis) United Way leaders were making and realized that even if I donated $100 a week FOR THE REST OF MY LIFE I wouldn't even make up one single year of their salary. I stopped giving at that point. I've never been asked to collect from neighbors and would never do so! I'd rather volunteer my time in a more meaningful way, and I do.

First, I want to thank the people who welcomed me to the group. I will try to check daily to see what's what... Is there some sort of order on the list of topics? It doesn't seem to be the latest message first the dates look to be mixed up... I did poorly in home ec sewing but found when my children were young I couldn't afford to buy much clothing for them. So, I felt forced to learn to sew better. Little did I know what a passion it would become for me. I am in my sewing room 8+ hours daily. Now, I am not always sewing or machine embroidering... lots of time spent on the ol' computer, I'm afraid. BUT, I have learned so much about and from the computer because of forums like this. It has been a Godsend for me and I can't imagine my life without a computer any more. My filing cabinet (old industrial 5 drawer)holds innumerable patterns for clothing. I still want to sew for myself making fun accessories and tops mostly since I live in jeans. I just purchased several patterns from individual designers that are unique but tasteful--IMHO, that is. I also wear aprons when in the kitchen and have recently ordered several retro-type apron patterns. I like the look and also the grease-spatter safety of my clothing underneath. I currently finished 4 tote bags made from nylon window screen. They were adorable and a garden center owner even offered to sell them if I'd make her some. No way... sewing is for pleasure now. Today I am hoping to finish a quilted table topper. All of these items are for my daughter and grans. I have pictures of the screen items on my desktop and am following the thread for downloading now. Hope to post pix but should it be under this topic if I do? Suzanne

I liked the snowboarders... I HATED the white pants on the "walkin" clothes, they were NOT flattering on anyone! just my humble opinion, but I thought the pants were B A D! lol

but the outfits they wore during their competitions on the most part were blah.. hard to pick out the different countries

Kat the white pants were a poor choice for athletes. Athletes have thighs! They worked in the summer games because the jackets were longer. With the short puffer jacket the white pants look silly.

Kat..we think alike... that was one of the things I did not like about this Olympics. You couldn't spot where in the pack your country was...very frustrating trying to find the little flag insignia on the uniorms.
Hope it's not PC gone awry in the Olympics.

What's the matter with the white pants? I thought they looked sharp.

OT at the closing ceremonies it looked like they isued a white cape or something to all the audience did anyone notice that?

I saw something like that at the opening ceremonies too, Minnie. I think the arena was cold (ice skating) and so they had a disposable thermal poncho at each seat. That's my guess.

Don't have any opinions about the pants.

I think that the ponchos were so that they could use that white background on which to project various images, thus making their field of operation, their screen, much larger than the central area where people were not sitting. They did that at the opening, at least.

I've been wanting to see a change in the US uniforms for a long time but most of what I saw was, well, pastel pajamas. I'd say, follow the snowboarders' lead. They looked good to me.

But at least none of them had their "pants on the ground"! Everyone I saw, albeit limited, they nonetheless represented the country with dignity and I applaud them for it.
