I'm having panic issues

We're nearing the end - my guys told me that they expect to be done the interior by the end of the week next. I think that's pushing it, there seems to be so much still, but ok..say they do get finished. The timeline for next week goes like this:

Cabinets come monday and install will be mon/tuesday Granite gets templated wed and installed - who knows. Wood island comes who knows. Paint gets finished. Appliances get delivered and installed. Lighting gets installed. All of these things I have only seen in small bits and pieces or ordered from pictures, and because I haven't copied any one kitchen it's all so unknown.

What if it all looks like CRAP when it goes together? In my head it looks a certain way, (totally fabulous, natch) but what if when all is said and done it doesn't look like what I'm seeing in my head??? I am having this panic because up until now I could live in the fantasy kitchen in my head, and while the work continues I could know that the finished product was far off, but now the reality is coming and what if I've messed up?

Please tell me this is normal and that everyone worries.

I did the same thing, usually about 3a.m....
I imagine it's pretty normal to second guess your decisions. In the end, it all came out great. Trust your instincts and the great choices you have made! It will all come together.

Bless you. How kind of you to be so concerned about ensuring a healthy Rosh Hashana for your friends. I'd suggest you not stress over the specifics. As a mother of a food allergic kid, I just ask that I know what's safe and what's not safe for him. I don't expect that every food in his vicinity will be okay for him to eat. You are being a truly loving and caring person. Take a deep breath and just make sure to communicate with the parents about what is ok/not ok for their child. I guarantee they will be overwhelmed with your thoughtfulness...and if they're not, well, they need a whack. :) Amy

You are wise to ask questions becasue you have a serious systems issue priority. This is classic example of why everyone needs to get your appliance specs and HVAC and electricians involved before beginning to design, especially if you want the commercial sized gas ranges. (Which you did.) Not every home can or should have gas or oversized appliances. Choosing the commercial lines adds huge costs for ventilation safety. Most people have no idea that a fan is as important as any other appliance. Call a few MORE HVAC companies and get them out to look and get some quotes. I cannot imagine any one with a gas ticket is putting in a line without checking the whole home balance, including the fan over your gas range and the range you chose. You simply cannot have gas without direct venting. You may have to compromise your range and change your BTU's or even go to induction. You need to hire a local Kitchen and Bath designer who will work with the HVAC contractor to get what you need and hopefully what you want. There are far too many details that are not even listed by yourself to address on line. Realistically, any advice here should be to have another qualified tradesperson look at it on site and work from there. This is one area where Houzz advice is not beneficial compared with a qualified tradesperson on site. Once you have this resolved and can pick the best appliance for your needs and wants then... we design. Best wishes and good on you for sharing your dilemma.

I usually get super cautious around structural issues, but I think you will probably be ok in carefully cutting off the stub. However, I would only try to do this with a flush cutting, oscillating tool, like a Dremel Multi-Max: Multi-Max MM30 , and I would only remove the projecting piece so it is flush with the wall...nothing more. And to insure it a little more, once the piece was cut flush, I would install a metal reinforcement plate that covered the end of the stub and ties in to the header and stud below it (using predrilled pilot holes so you don't crack what's left of the stub). Two questions, though: 1) Can yo tell if the rafter end rests on this stub piece, or does it actually sit on the header beneath it? 2) Have you noticed whether the stub or the rafter have any movement in them?

I remember that panic...How do I know that all of my choices will come together to create the whole vision I have in my head? Will it look like one grand room and 'look' or like pieces jumbled together? But time has calmed my nerves and made me more confident about my choices.

I have panic issues of my own, though (I've already whined to the Build a House forum), and have to say I've moved on to feeling like I don't care what it looks like, I just want it finished! After 18 months of building our house, and the loan extensions running out as of YESTERDAY, here a couple photos of what my kitchen looks like right now. ANYthing will be an improvement! You are fortunate...Sounds like things will wrap up pretty quickly and you'll be able to see how fabulous it will look. Hang in there and trust the time and thought you've put in.

i agree it is normal! all i have done is my floor and i keep walking in there with my granite sample to see how it looks together!

omg glad that's what I've been doing all day! Walking in with the granite. Ok that look fine. Walking in with the wall paint sample. Ok that looks fine. I think its the cabinets that have me really worried and I've been really indecisive about them from the start and just couldn't make up my mind.

But to answer the question--though I'm sure it'll be gorgeous!--what you'll do if it's not is you'll tell us exactly what's wrong and GW'ers will help you solve the problems and get it to the vision stage :D

I sure hope that sort of panic is normal, cuz I'm right there with you! Freaking out as things come together in the end, and as happy as I am to be almost done, I'm now scared to see the final product- what if it disappoints me?????? Hang in there!

See, I'm kinda the opposite. I panic when I'm making all the choices. It took us 4 hours to choose what base boards we were going to use. And at the end I was like, "Whatever, I don't care anymore!" So far, things have come together and the bathrooms look awesome. I just hope the kitchen turns out just as well.

I too agree, this is a good panic, like getting ready to go on stage and worrying if you'll mess up even though you've practiced to death. If you did even a minute bit of planning, it will be OK. If it doesn't look like your dream, it will still be OK. My kitchen looks A LOT better than my dream - so much so, that I'm having additional work done - removing cabinets, opening up spaces, etc. NOW I'm worried. But, it still looks great (I least my neighbors are jealous!!) So don't worry, you can still make some darn good-tasting lemonade with a bunch of lemons, and I'm sure you have more than lemmons to work with.

For some reason my post (which WAS the first reply is not showing up). Oh well...

Time to get OUT of the house, take the kiddies and DH and go tobagonning, skating, swimming, bowling, anything. Don't even think about the house for the next 24 hours.

You'll come back refreshed, revitalized, and ready to tackle the next week coming up (oh yeah- and take lots of vitamins, and try and get some good sleep).

That's Dr. Rae's 2 bits worth!

It's going to be great. (We're demoing Master bedroom this weekend- fun- NOT- and kitchen's not even done yet...ugh)

I have moved beyond panic attacks to indecision. Because if I am indecisive and don't pick something I don't have the panic attack or worse yet the "Did I really pick that?" thought. The contractor called on Wednesday telling me he is ready for my lighting decisions. The crazy thing is I had them all worked out in my head but committing to each of them threw me in a tizzy. For the past 3 days I have been all over my little town and the internet and you know what I ended up with? You guessed it, my original lighting fixtures.

Sounds like we are on the same schedule installation wise. They are installing our cabinets on Monday also. Good Luck.

Oh BuffetGirl...I so understand! I feel exactly the same way right now...and I still have an empty room! Take a deep breath and relax...and Plllog's right...it will probably be fine and if it isn't, we'll help you get it there! (Now, if I could only practice what I preach!)
