Budget Friendly Wall Mount Range Hoods?

Hello

I am doing minor upgrade to an original kitchen (haven't demoed yet). The home is located on the San Francisco Peninsula and was built in the mid 1950s. The kitchen is original and could use a complete remodel however we have a 6 month old and 2 1/2 year old and can't afford it at the moment nor can we have the kitchen down for a long time.

Most likely I will remodel the kitchen in about 7-10 years after we save some $ and the kids are older. Therefore I do not want to spend a lot on this minor upgrade.

The scope of my upgrade is to cut out a cabinet and install a dishwasher. I am also going to remove the 4 1/4" tile and replace the counters and backsplashes with Granite.

So far I purchased a dishwasher, sink (KRAUS), garbage disposal, and faucet. I also bought a new 30" gas range (Frigidaire)

I currently have a 8" or 10" Blo-Fan Fryne round ventilation fan in the ceiling, that is as old as the home.

I am thinking of getting a wall mounted range hood and wanted to know what's is out there that is decent to good quality without costing a lot. I don't mind it was made in China. Actually the Kraus sink (made in China) that I got is really nice and the price was great.

I am looking for budget friendly brands to research as well as discount online sellers.

I saw a Summit Range Hood by Valore at Costco Online for $379, its 600cfm. Not sure if this is a good deal or if I can do better?

Hi, welcome!

That is a very good hood, IMHO, good enough for permanent installation, unless you don't care for the design.

My criteria for hood selection:

1. Style - this is up to you.

2. Maintenance - Stainless steel is easy to clean and will work with any color scheme now or in the future. Washable filter is good.

3. CFM - 600 CFM is good enough for normal cooking. Multi-speed fan saves heat and air conditioning if the hood is ducted.

4. Noise level - This hood has a quiet fan.

5. Hood light - this hood has two 50W halogen GU10 bulbs, they are very bright. Don't turn them on if you don't need them. They only last about 2,000 hours and expensive to replace. I don't like halogen bulbs over cooking, you may want to replace them with GU-10 LED bulbs. Halogen bulbs are pressurized and can shatter if grease collect on the bulb.

6. Durability - should not be an issue, if they use a non-ventilated induction motor, otherwise it will be a problem.

If you look at the Modern-Aire site, they have several shapes where the front tapers at the top to the depth of an upper cabinet, and the sides are straight so as to butt up to, and cover, the yellow cabinet sides you mentioned. Their typical sizes are 18" and 30" high, but you could get a 24" custom one if your budget allows. Or you could get an 18" and have a box made for above it to cover that area and to which you could attach replacement moulding. The box could be made of either wood matching your moulding or sheetrock. Vent-a-hood has a stainless direct replacement if you decide to stick with the same size you now have. Check out Kobe hoods, which give a lot of bang for the buck. My preference is baffle filters instead of mesh filters. The Costco Summit hood you linked has mesh filters. Mesh filters tend to clog with grease which diminishes the hood's efficiency quickly. Baffle filter hoods typically cost more, but I believe the added expense is very worthwhile. You mention you are replacing a fan in the ceiling. Does that mean you will be installing new ductwork for this wall-mount chimney hood? If so, try to install an exhaust duct that is 8". Most hoods (though not all) with 600 cfms or more require an 8" duct. If your duct is smaller than that, your hood will be less effective and more noisy through no fault of the hood. Having said that, there are hoods that are made to fit 6" ducts, just not as many of them.

I purchased an unfinished wood hood and stained it to match my cabinets. I used a Broan 390 vent insert. Total plus install labor was about $1000. I saw a wood hood faux painted to look black with rivets, but any real metal hood (other than a simple stainless) will be very expensive. This is the style of my hood - except it is bigger than mine - my range is only 30": This hood unfinished is much more than mine was: Unfinished and without vent - starts at over $1300: https://www.kitchensource.com/range-hoods/na-r3036smb1.htm You might use a faux metal paint - but whatever, make sure it is washable.
