We're putting a standing seam copper roof on the screened porch portion of an addition we are building (screened porch is 11'x17'), and I want to say that its costing ~$5,000. The pricing for individual items gets a little blurry when bundled in a bigger project. Since ours is new construction, it doesn't involve a tear off. And like I said, ours is copper, so if you're looking at another metal it may be less expensive.

Make sure you look into the tax benefits. Depending on where you live, it can add up to a lot. We are in Maryland, and we got a 20% credit from the state (not just a deduction) for both interior and exterior rehabilitation of our 100 year old house. They required that we submit a rehab plan in advance of starting work, so make sure you look into requirements ahead of time. On top of that, our county gives an additional 10% credit against our property taxes for any exterior rahab/maintenance work. We've gotten back over 20 grand in tax credits so far. Not shabby.

Wish I had more specific help. I was looking at houses on the Dayton OH mls and saw a nice say 20 year old log cabin with a green standing seam roof - in the comments it was saying that it cost 17k a few years ago but I can't remember square feet. Roof wasn't too complicated...that's about all I can remember.

Also I see two kinds of metal roofs here: true standing seam and a sort of faux standing seam that is actually fairly large painted metal panels. (I'm not talking about galavanized corrugated metal.) The fake one is much cheaper, of course and is used a lot here. We have it on an outbuilding and it has withstood 15 years of serious weather, including a tornado a decade ago. Did as well as the nearby slate, and much better than any of the shingled barns.

My next door neighbor did a porch about 10 x 25 and a breezeway that was about 16 x 20 plus gutters with copper, real standing seam. Here in southern Indiana (a relatively inexpensive place for most things) it set her back $16,000+.

But is shore is purty....:)

The price of copper has shot into the stratosphere in the last several years. As you can see from several of the previous posts, a copper roof is outrageously expensive. Go with a steel roof rather than copper to keep it affordable. I have a steel, standing seam roof and love it, but it came with the house so I can't give you cost figures.

Here is some general info on tax credits. Unfortunately federal credits only apply to income-producing structures, but this should head you in the right direction to find details in your state. I just googled "historic tax credits new york" and tons of links popped up. We're in an historic district, so we qualified pretty much automatically, but I don't think you need to be. Good luck.

Nothing, I can see for a state-wide NY tax credit for work on non-income producing structures. Occasionally there are local incentives, but they are rare.

It's a true pity NY is so backward about this compared to other states. We have only an income-producing barn tax credit, and that's it as far as I can tell.

Hopefully Renee has a line on some local program to help her project; I think she's out in the more western part of the state where perhaps they've wised up.

I have never found any local or state grants for renovating our house. The only ones I found were for houses owned by a non-profit org. not a normal residance. There are also energy star loans and grants for people under a certain income. We do not qualify though.

I didn't know there was "fake" standing seam roofs. The ones I am interested in come in long lengths and the roofers crimp them together as they install the roof. I assume this is the real standing seam roof.

I have seen more and more of these roofs in our area lately however there are still very few of them.

Chicoryflower over on Home Decorating just got a metal roof and I think she's in upstate NY too? Looks terrific. We hope to be able to put off our roof project long enough to afford a faux standing seam roof for the main roof and a real copper one for the little teeny roof to the front bay.

We install may types of metal roofs and they can be somewhat expensive to have done. Our pricing would be $500-$1500 per square (10'x10'= 1 Square)depending on the type of metal and the pitch of the roof.
There are to many variables to ever give a price online. The very best thing you can do is contact 4 or 5 roofing contractors and have them give you some ideas and estimates. Standing seam roofs are a very good choice of roofing. Just make sure the contractor you hire has done many metal roofs before as you never want yours to be his first attempt. Metal is hard to work with and requires skilled professionals. Get some bids and then educate yourself on the different types of systems they offer.
