Here I go again... darn AT&T modem isn't working

and I spent "only" 1 hour and 15 minutes on the phone this time.....

I hope to be back sooner than last time... meanwhile, I am at the local library.

It sounded that you've posted the problem here before. If so, I missed it. Can you explain what's the problem? How do you have the DSL model set up?

In the past, I found AT&T tech support not being very helpful. Fortunately, I know someone more technical and he helped me to solve the problems. Maybe, I can help you out.

Is your unit a gateway? I have an ATT device connected to a phone line to get DSL and ATT called my unit a gateway. Its a combination modem and wireless router. My unit has been working well for 2.5 years, but I do know they can go bad. One failed for a friend of mine and the repair was simple: plug in a new gateway and do a setup.

I live in an area where buying a pellet gun or setting traps I'd be up my ears in dead squirrels within a week with more left to kill. Oddly, i live IN the city and not a rural area. The thing is I live in a place bordering one of the largest green areas for a few miles. The squirrel population is extraordinary. At almost any point during the day you see huge families cutting back/forth. Very few seem to actually live near my garden, but this squirrel community is so expansive they seem to be able to scour huge amounts of territory without fighting for the territory. I don't know if squirrels tribe up or anything, but around here I'd have to control my garden instead of the squirrels. The squirrels are firmly in charge here. hehe... I haven't had an issue with them being huge pests in 3 years here...until this year. This year they have developed a really huge appetite for tomatoes. Rather than losing a handful every flush I'm getting plants stripped bare as far as they can reach. Oh well...

I came across a strange little patch of completely and perfectly white bluebells years ago. They were surrounded by the usual blue variety so they really made a statement! I carried an old washtub down there and carefully dug several large clumps to transplant here and after all these years they still haven't spread too much. And yes, they still bloom snow-white. Naturally, I refer to them as my whitebells... Speaking of native blooms, I read that tradescantia (spiderwort) is notoriously hardy and easily propogated but they have been a large disappointment so far for me. Maybe this is because I initially relied on stock that I bought from a dealer instead of simply relocating some from the woods around here. I didn't think I wanted to dig up any of the stuff right here because most things do best right where they are without some human trying to 'improve' things, but maybe I should stick with a strictly local variety. If I dig a few tradescantia plants for my native bed here closer to the house, will they recover soon enough as I have read? And I'm talking about my own property and not just going about willy-nilly digging up stuff all across the county...

It's not just AT&T. We had the same problem with Comcast. And my daughter had a nightmare with Direct TV. And don't get me started with our Verizon experience. Geez -- you pay these "services" BIG bucks and they ALL give you grief for the privilege of paying them, because you don't even have a choice of not using them. These monopolies are customer no-service. And that's the only company you can use because your city signed some contract to make them the only provider. AAARRGGHH!!

Most of the higher end houses I work on, I try to warn the customers of cable, phone, sat installs and tell them it is best to basically keep the installer out of the house as much as possible. Home run all the rooms back to a central board or enclosure and terminate everything and buy equipment (like cable amps, network switch). Bring out the main RG6 and Cat5 feed to the outdoors and let them take it from there. Homeowners get confused when they are paying me $100 plus per drop when the cable company says $30 but just have to remind them what $30 gets them ($5-10 worth of cable, the service van's expense, $5-10 for the labor). Then there have been a few times they've still attempted to mess with my work or run new wire. One day the cable tech cut off every termination I made (same connectors as theirs) I got to the job and he told me that their connectors have a blue ring and mine are red. If his supervisor came out, he would know he didn't do any work because of the connector color. Most of the time the techs are just baffled to see our board with 4 to 60 RG6 cables all cut to the inch and cleanly labeled and the hierarchy of splitters correctly designed. They're used to zip tying a ball of cables and splitter to the ceiling.

Are you talking wireless? When we signed up for AT&T's U-verse for wireless, they gave us a 2Wire modem. In the space of a month and a half, we got 5 replacements because they kept going out. The last time it happened, the person on the phone told us about their new "black box" and said to tell the tech when he got there that that was what we wanted. Of course, he tried to push the 2Wire again (they've got to get rid of them, right?), but DH said, "No, I want the black box). Tech installed it and we have had no trouble since (knock on wood). It's been a couple of months now, and I'm hoping problem solved.

Yes, I am talking wireless.

Donna, I had a two wire, that worked GREAT for about 2 years for my daughter, and she upgraded, and I used hers. It died early this year.

They gave me a "black box". I " installed " it on the 24th of last month.

Worked GREAT, till yesterday afternoon. In fact, I was online yesterday morning, with no problem, but could not connect yesterday afternoon.

Since I can connect here at the library, I am guessing, I was right when I reported my modem not working...

Hopefully a replacement shows up on my front porch soon. Meanwhile, I stopped at the library on my way home from a bike ride with Mel (22 miles).

Now, home, dinner, and I guess a bit of TV.
